A digital expression method for the module interface in a practical bus chassis modular design and case history

Modular design of products can effectively reduce product development cycle with the idea of concurrent engineering, the efficient management of module interface information in the design process is the premise and foundation for module sharing. This study aims to develop a methodology for interface information management in bus chassis modular design. The characteristics of module interfaces in mechanical design are first investigated by the comparison with Universal Serial Bus interfaces. A digital expression method is then proposed to describe the characteristics of interface geometry information using two matrices with mapping relationships. An encoding method is then developed for the interface information management in modular design. Finally, the implementation of the above method was illustrated with a case study of an electric bus chassis modular design. The results indicate that the digital expression method can represent the geometric information of the module interface precisely and provide a good foundation for the establishment of the modules database for the bus chassis. Novelty of the research is to provide a methodology to represent the characteristics of interface in mechanical design through digital expression.

To improve the capability of small underwater vehicle for different type of tasks, such as high speed cruise and low speed exploration, a modular design method is discussed and different module interface forms are compared to guide the development of small reconfigurable underwater vehicle. By analyzing the structure characters and function parameters of underwater vehicle, a practical module partition method is proposed and according to a certain requirement for survey task a typical module interface form of small modular underwater vehicle is developed, including the function module structure and mechanical and electrical interface. Some possible structures based on the basic modules are also described to validate the reconfigurable capability of the small underwater vehicle.

A software development process can be considered rational if each design decision can be justified based on given facts and design decisions that were made, reviewed, and accepted earlier. This paper describes a set of documents that can serve as a "knowledge base" for more rational software development. Each of these documents can be viewed as a place where the decisions made in one phase of a software development can be recorded for those who work in the next phase. These documents make it possible to develop software in a rational and reviewable way. We describe why each document is needed, how it should be organized. and how the information in the whole set of documents can be represented in a precise, checkable, and accessible way. Although software development based on modules is now widely practiced and taught, specification of module interfaces has received far less acceptance. Languages such as Ada and Modula-2 require an interface specification, but it is syntactic, merely listing the exported procedures and functions and their signatures. No semantic information is given, leaving the effect of each call on the return value of other calls unspecified. module users must either guess the interface semantics or infer them from the module implementation, seriously compromising the value of the modular approach. Formal methods, such as the algebraic and trace approaches, do specify interface semantics, but have proved difficult to teach and to apply in practice. In this paper we present the software cost reduction (SCR) method for specifying the syntax and semantics of the module interface. We describe the basic approach and illustrate it on simple, but complete examples. We describe and demonstrate the additional features and techniques we have introduced to handle more complex problems. We also show the precise relationship between the SCR and trace techniques by presenting a method for converting any SCR specification to an equivalent trace specification.

In order to solve the emulation problem of distributed multi-sensor information fusion, a MATLAB toolbox is designed. From the view of the basic concepts, basic theory and data processing of information fusion, with embedded M-Function in Simulink, the distributed multi-sensor information fusion system is divided into eleven modules in the toolbox and the input and output interfaces of the modules are defined. At last an emulation example based on the toolbox proves the practicality and scientificity of the designed toolbox. The designed toolbox can effectively define the interfaces of the modules to afford one practical solution for the emulation of distributed multi-sensor information fusion system. Background: In synthetic biology, gene regulatory circuits are often constructed by combining smaller circuit components. Connections between components are achieved by transcription factors acting on promoters. If the individual components behave as true modules and certain module interface conditions are satisfied, the function of the composite circuits can in principle be ***: In this paper, we investigate one of the interface conditions: fan-out. We quantify the fan-out, a concept widely used in electrical engineering, to indicate the maximum number of the downstream inputs that an upstream output transcription factor can regulate. The fan-out is shown to be closely related to retroactivity studied by Del Vecchio, et al. An efficient operational method for measuring the fan-out is proposed and shown to be applied to various types of module interfaces. The fan-out is also shown to be enhanced by self-inhibitory regulation on the output. Modular design is a valid design method in the mechatronics product design process, which has an important effect on the product development. This paper is devoted to presenting a systematic modular design approach based on modular interface technology. The interfaces of mechatronics system include mechanical interface, electrical interface, mechatronics interface, software interface, and man-machine interface. After mechatronics system model is proposed, the data structure model of mechatronics products is proposed. Matching strategy of modular interface based on modular interface feature model is then put forward. The modular design of robot arms is given as an example, which demonstrates that the methodology is obviously helpful for product development.

The modular design offers insurement for effective development of serial and diversify products, and hence to satisfy the demand of the market. Through researching the modular design in function and structure, the process schem of modular design characterizing anchor and windlass products was proposed. By studying the module partition method of function and structure, the anchor and windlass was classified as modules of power, modules of driving and changing, modules of control, modules of performing. Based on the program language and three-dimensional software, the computer-aided modular design system for anchor and windlass was established, which satisfies the parametric design for anchor and windlass.

To improve the accuracy of modular reconfigurable robots by kinematic parameter calibration, currently, the studies mostly adopt calibrating and compensating methods of common robot arm to modular reconfigurable robots. This kind of methods need external measuring equipments to carry out sophisticated operations and cannot realize the original research intention of high precision operations after the rapid reconfiguration of a modular robot. By analyzing the geometric size errors of module body and the assembly errors between modules, this paper proposes a calibration method for modular reconfigurable robots based on parameters measurement, which is replacing the machining and assembly precision with measured ones. For this, a pair of module interfaces is designed. The position and angle errors can be recognized in the assembly interfaces of module by using the relative geometric position between the range sensors of configuration and the pairing interfaces, and the sensor reading. The method achieves an active decoupling for assembly errors between modules. It establishes the foundation for the rapid compensation of the modular robot after reconfiguration.
