Modularization of process plants with its standardization activities is one of the current responses to react to dynamic markets, shorter product life cycles, and uncertain supply chains. Standardized solutions for intelligent process equipment assemblies with own automation promise high potential for chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Despite the standardized description of the module type package (MTP) and the corresponding service concept, the implementation of the service logic is left to the manufacturer, which often leads to finding various granular services for different process functions or assemblies. In this contribution, different service design approaches for a generic 'separate' service are investigated on the example of a solvent extraction and a distillation column. Additionally, a Raman spectroscope device for process analysis is implemented via MTP with an 'analyze' service. Pros and cons of the different service design approaches are discussed in the context of a fast and flexible process development in the laboratory.

Image analysis presents a set of powerful methods to receive additional information about multiphase processes. It enables the development of advanced applications for process monitoring and optimization or, so-called, soft sensors. However, the integration of advanced smart sensor systems based on image analysis into the process control system presents a complex task. To address this challenge, a modular automation concept offers a standardized interface to integrate modules. This paper presents an integration profile as a service specification that allows a plug-and-measure integration of smart visual sensors into modular plants. To verify the concept, we applied it to three different use cases. At the end, we discuss open challenges in the integration of complex analysis systems with multidimensional data streams into modular plants.

Optimized and decentralized process control is crucial for energy systems incorporating renewable energy, as it enhances flexibility and reliability by dynamically managing variable energy inputs like solar and wind. This ensures optimal resource utilization and supports grid stability while minimizing environmental impact. However, the integration of external applications (e.g., for operational optimization) into existing process control systems for energy systems is cumbersome due to missing interfaces. This paper presents a novel approach to integrate Advanced Process Control applications into process control systems within modular production plants for energy systems using the module type package standard. The proposed integration framework facilitates system integration and enhances scalability, particularly in complex and dynamic industrial environments. The framework reduces manual configuration efforts and improves the operational efficiency of modular plants by enabling standardized and reliable communication between Advanced Process Control systems and process control systems. The proposed framework is validated through a case study on modular electrolysis plants, demonstrating its effectiveness in real-world applications. © 2024 IEEE.

To address the need for flexibility of production plants in the process industry modularization is a widely accepted approach. In particular, the module type package Concept described in VDI/VDE/NAMUR 2658 is seen as a possible core part for modularization. A clear separation of engineering efforts into plant-independent module engineering and plant-specific integration engineering as well as a fast integration of a module's automation system into a higher-level process control system changes the fundamental automation architecture. However, in the state-of-the-art technical literature which has been analyzed and applied by the authors, few security considerations are made for modularization and especially the module type package. This is even more problematic considering that even with an extensive field of security analysis, standards, and guidelines to secure conventional operational technology recent reports found severe vulnerabilities in those. This paper elaborates on security standards and guidelines to which the module type package Concept should be compliant to achieve a high coverage regarding security requirements in the context of industrial automation and control systems. Based on this a security analysis of the module type package Concept is performed on the IEC 62443, VDI/VDE 2182, and NIST SP 800-82.

The introduction of an energy management system allows companies to monitor their own energy consumption and to improve the energy efficiency of their production. The use of modular production provides companies the flexibility to adapt their production to the demands of the market. In this paper, these two concepts are combined for the first time, thus allowing energy management to be deployed in modular production. In order to achieve this, the module type package (MTP) as the automationrelated module description is extended by the aspect of energy management functionalities. This aspect provides the possibility to perform energy-specific measurements in the module's devices as well as to influence the module's energy demand by load management commands.

Critical infrastructure systems are usually widely distributed and integrated into a central control system. The connection is established using telecontrol protocols. Today, the integration of so-called remote terminal units is mostly done manually or partially automated. However, there is still potential and demand for optimizing these integration processes. With the help of the module type package, the integration can be implemented completely automatically. For this purpose, this contribution introduces a model extension of the MTP CommunicationSet for the description of the IEC 60870-5-104 telecontrol protocol. Thus, the module type package concept can be used for the integration of remote terminal units.

This contribution presents a mechanism for highly automated integration of flexible transport systems into modular production-related logistics systems based on the module type package concept. The functionality of the transport system is represented by MTP-based Transport Order Services. These form a common broker with an uniform interface for interaction between logistics modules and the transport system. Thus, project-specific adjustments can be avoided. This concept has been implemented and successfully evaluated using a modular palletizing system.

While modular plants and their modular automation have received increasing attention in the wake of the development of a standardized interface, the module type package (MTP), suitable approaches for systematic support in early phases of their engineering are still missing. Particularly in early engineering phases, a continuous collaboration between multiple engineering disciplines is essential to define what is required in terms of services and modular automation using MTP. In this contribution, the authors propose an approach for an automated generation of MTP skeletons based on ontologies in the early engineering phases. The approach uses intentionbased engineering, wherein the first steps intentions and required functionalities of the modular plant are defined and, subsequently, MTP services are modeled inside an ontology. In a further step, this ontology is automatically transformed into an MTP skeleton representing an MTP without instance-specific implementation of the services. The approach has been evaluated using the Tennessee Eastman Process (TEP), a widely known reference process for control systems design and analysis.

A Multi-Agent Approach for the Optimized Operation of Modular Electrolysis Plants

In response to the energy transition to renewable resources, green hydrogen production via electrolysis is gaining momentum. Modular electrolysis plants provide a flexible and scalable solution to meet rising hydrogen demand and adapt to renewable energy fluctuations. However, optimizing their operation poses challenges, especially when dealing with heterogeneous electrolyzer modules. In this work, a combination of decentralized Multi-Agent Systems and the module type package concept is presented that enhances the cost-optimized operation of modular electrolysis plants. This approach synergizes the individual strengths of Multi-Agent Systems in handling complex operational dynamics with the efficiency of the module type package for integration and control capabilities. By integrating these technologies, the approach addresses the heterogeneity of electrolyzer modules and increases the adaptability, scalability, and operational flexibility of electrolysis plants. The approach was validated through a case study, demonstrating its effectiveness in achieving cost-optimized load scheduling, dynamic response to demand-supply fluctuations, and resilience against electrolyzer module malfunctions. In summary, the presented approach offers a comprehensive solution for the effective coordination and optimization of modular electrolysis plants.

In the context of industrial cyber-physical systems in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, services and service-oriented architectures are being increasingly used. Services are mainly used in modular automation in the context of modular process plants. The design of services requires a high level of expertise in the field of automation as well as domain knowledge from the field of process engineering. This contribution presents an approach for the derivation of services in modular process plants from descriptions of intentions. The approach includes different ontological models for the modeling of intentions and services. The intention ontology describes goals, implementations, and requirements of the system from the viewpoint of the domain expert. To bridge the gap between the abstract objectives described by the intentions and the technically detailed services, functionality descriptions are used. A workflow for the design and selection of services from intentions is presented using the aforementioned ontological models. This approach supports the systematic design of services in the industrial context of modular process plants.
