Standalone OPC UA Wrapper for Industrial monitoring and control systems

OPC unified architecture (UA), a communication standard for the manufacturing industry, enables exchanging control and management data among distributed entities in industrial automation systems. OPCUA wrapper is a migration strategy that provides UA clients with seamless access to legacy servers having OPC classic interfaces. This paper presents the design of a standalone OPC UA wrapper and discusses its performance through extensive experiments using a prototype implementation. The wrapper consists of two main components, i.e., UA server and classic client, which communicate with each other via shared memory and semaphore. One important feature of the design is that it employs a distributed component object model runtime library implemented in Java for platform independence. This makes it possible to build a cost-competitive wrapper system by using commercial off-the-shelf non-Windows solutions with low-cost microprocessors. Another key feature is the event-driven update interface between the UA and classic components, which we propose as an alternative to the sampling-based mechanism for the reduced delay. Through experiments using workloads from an industrial monitoring system, we present a systematic approach of identifying the system parameters having a direct impact on the wrapper performance and eventually tuning them such that the read and subscription services of OPC UA exhibit the best performance.

M&C ML: A modeling language for monitoring and control systems

The use of System Engineering (SE) language such as SysML [1,20] is common within the community of control system designers. However the design handoff to the subsequent phases of the control system development is carried out manually in most cases without much tool support. The approach to agreeing on the control interface between components is a good example where engineers still rely on either manually created Interface control. Documents (ICD) or one off tools implemented by individual projects. Square Kilometer Array (SKA) [2] and International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) [3] are two good examples of such large projects adopting these approaches. This results in non-uniformity in the overall system design since individual groups invent their own vocabulary while using a language like SysML which leads to inconsistencies across the design, interface and realized code. To mitigate this, we propose the development of a monitoring and control Modeling Language (M&CML), a domain specific language (DSL) [4,22] for specifying M&C solutions. M&C ML starts with defining a vocabulary borrowing concepts from standard practices used in the control domain and incorporates a language which ensures uniformity and consistency across the M&C design, interfaces and implementation artifacts. This paper describes a methodological study carried out between 2018 and 2022, at Rey Juan Carlos University, focused on the subject monitoring and control systems within a master's program in Industrial Engineering. The study proposes an innovative teaching strategy using problem-based learning and project-based learning methodologies. The projects undertaken are based on Internet of Things (IoT) systems aimed at enhancing weather stations, services and facilitating real-time decision-making. Inspired by our experience in the development of Industry 4.0 projects, we have designed a methodological strategy for this subject that focuses on providing students with the necessary knowledge and skills in the field of control and monitoring systems and the IoT to develop real monitoring and control systems. The approach emphasizes interdisciplinary problem-solving, with students working collaboratively in stable teams. Throughout the 16-week course, tasks of increasing complexity are completed, resulting in the development of a complete system. The practical approach of the course and its relation to real applications motivates students, resulting in better performance. The acquired techniques and skills from the course are broadly applicable across engineering disciplines.

Cyber-physical systems of systems (CPSoS) are large complex systems where physical elements interact with and are controlled by a large number of distributed and networked computing elements as well as human users. Their increasingly stringent demands on efficient use of resources, high service and product quality levels and, of course low cost and competitiveness on the world market introduce big challenges related to the design operation continuum of dependable connected CPSs. The CPSoSaware project aims at developing the models and software tools to allocate computational power/resources to the CPS end devices and autonomously determining what cyber-physical processes will be handled by the devices' heterogeneous components (CPUs, GPUs, FPGA fabric, software stacks). The project relies on Artificial Intelligence (AI) support to strengthen reliability, fault tolerance and security at system level and also to lead to CPS designs that work in a decentralized way, collaboratively, in an equilibrium, by sharing tasks and data with minimal central intervention. The CPSoSaware system will interact with the human users/operators through extended reality visual and touchable interfaces increasing situational awareness. The CPSoSaware system will be evaluated: i) in the automotive sector, in mixed traffic environments with semi-autonomous connected vehicles and ii) in the manufacturing industry where inspection and repair scenarios are employed using collaborative robots.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the differences in the circadian variations of blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) among three subject groups (hypertensive, normal/high normal and optimal blood pressure). The ambulatory BP and HR of 385 subjects, without clinical evidence of hypertension-related complications, were acquired using a Holter Blood Pressure Monitor and their circadian patterns were analyzed. Systolic, Diastolic and Mean BP showed four different well-defined trends in specific time intervals of the day, similar for the three BP measures and among the three subject groups. Both BP and HR signals presented a decrease between 10:00 and 14:30 and from 19:00 to 2:00 and an increase from 5:00 to 10:00. Between 14:30 and 19:00, BP and HR presented an opposite relationship with decreasing HR and increasing BP, not yet reported in the literature. The behaviors of BP and HR were well approximated in each of the four periods by linear trends in all the three subject groups. On the contrary, in the period between 2:00 and 5:00 both BP and HR showed a quite constant trend. Results support the hypothesis of an independent vagal control during 24-h in respect of HR and BP mean levels, the latter depending on the specific subject group. Moreover, linear approximation in the identified four intervals could be used to quantify the circadian changes for all kind of subjects.

Turning Base Transceiver Stations into Scalable and controllable DC Microgrids Based on a Smart Sensing Strategy

This paper describes a practical approach to the transformation of Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) into scalable and controllable DC Microgrids in which an energy management system (EMS) is developed to maximize the economic benefit. The EMS strategy focuses on efficiently managing a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) along with photovoltaic (PV) energy generation, and non-critical load-shedding. The EMS collects data such as real-time energy consumption and generation, and environmental parameters such as temperature, wind speed and irradiance, using a smart sensing strategy whereby measurements can be recorded and computing can be performed both locally and in the cloud. Within the Spanish electricity market and applying a two-tariff pricing, annual savings per installed battery power of 16.8 euros/kW are achieved. The system has the advantage that it can be applied to both new and existing installations, providing a two-way connection to the electricity grid, PV generation, smart measurement systems and the necessary management software. All these functions are integrated in a flexible and low cost HW/SW architecture. Finally, the whole system is validated through real tests carried out on a pilot plant and under different weather conditions.

The use of advanced energy-efficient building practices is widely increasing in the international marketplace. These include building commissioning, energy simulation, measurement and verification, carbon dioxide monitoring as well as controllability of artificial lighting and ventilation systems. These processes should not be looked upon in isolation because after all, they aim at achieving almost the same green goals but acting on different sustainable criteria or life stages. It is also noted that a common obstacle for adopting such practices in the marketplace is their perceived high cost owing to the additional time and expertise required. Hence, the study proposes that their optimized integration is the cornerstone to be able to reach high building performance. This is performed through a cohesive qualitative and quantitative methodology to develop an integrated model for the abovementioned green building practices. Accordingly, relevant literature studies are studied to propose four loops of integration. This is complimented by the result of an online questionnaire among worldwide practitioners to pinpoint interesting interrelations among some of these practices. Then the results are integrated into a stock and flow diagram to define interrelations and problematic areas according to four proposed integration loops; L1: procedure, L2: temporal sequence, L3: pros and L4: cons. The study uses system dynamic modelling tools to represent the integration diagram proposed for such green building practices. Eventually, the results of the study present means of integrating advanced energy-efficient building practices as subcomponents of a larger system integration model to reach higher building energy performance targets. This can be later developed in building management plans and applications.

The use and development of Infrared Synchrotron Accelerator Diagnostics methods and systems in a study of high-speed processes in a project of the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research concerned with the modern complex of superconducting accelerators with the heavy ion collider of the Nuclotron-based Ion Collider Facility (NICA) are considered. Magnetic bremsstrahlung of counter beams of relativistic charged particles is investigated. A technique of detecting magnetic bremsstrahlung synchrotron and coherent radiation at the JINR/NICA complex is proposed.

A method is presented for detection of magnetic bremsstrahlung on colliding beams in colliders, particularly coherent bremsstrahlung in the area of low-energy photons in collision with high-energy particle beams. The properties of coherent bremsstrahlung and its capability for detection and use of beams in diagnostics are presented.

In this article, the authors propose a distributed infrastructure for intelligent building control using multi-agent technology, based on their own solutions. The novelties are regarding to modified Modbus communication protocol that was obtained by reorganization of the protocol data structure while keeping the standard functionality for legacy devices, innovative hardware controllers as communication network nodes and an original distributed software. The system ensures a high level of hardware and software modularity, which relies on configurability, scalability and robustness. The system performs functions such as fault detection and diagnosis, monitoring and control through analysis of variables at different stages of building management process, paying attention to the exchange of information between different communication interfaces.
