multi-level modeling extends the conventional two-level classification scheme to deal with subject domains in which classes are also considered instances of other classes. In the past, we have explored theoretical foundations for multi-level conceptual modeling and proposed an axiomatic theory for multi-level modeling dubbed MLT. MLT provides concepts for multi-level modeling along with a number of rules to guide the construction of sound multi-level conceptual models. Despite the benefits of MLT, it is still unable to deal with a number of general notions underlying conceptual models (including the notions used in its own definition). In this paper, we present an extension of MLT to deal with these limitations. The resulting theory (called MLT*) is novel in that it combines a strictly stratified theory of levels with the flexibility required to model abstract notions that defy stratification into levels such as a universal "Type" or, even more abstract notions such as "Entity" and "Thing".

Any meta-modeling discipline, similar to programming languages, will, sooner or later, feel the need for some operational language in order to express constraints for model validation and/or action semantics for executable modeling. multi-level meta-modeling is no exception in this regard. However, it does provide the facility to formalize the operation language within the meta-modeling framework, thus the language syntax and semantics fits perfectly well the intended need of the modeling environment. Moreover, if the modeling framework is flexible enough in the principles, the model validation can be specified and also applied to the operation language as well. In this paper, we shortly introduce such a modeling formalism, DMLA, and then describe in relative detail the design and the current realization of its operation language, DMLAScript, which enables the multi-level meta-modeling framework to effectively tackle realistic domain models.

In recent years, a wide range of tools and methodologies have been introduced in the field of multi-level meta-modeling. One of the newest approaches is the Dynamic multi-Layer Algebra (DMLA). DMLA incorporates a fully self-modeled textual operation language (DMLAScript) over its tuple-based model entity representation. This textual language provides effective and complex features when editing models. On the other hand, the language supports the precise injective mapping of the multi-layers. However, such complexity comes at a price. Using DMLAScript can be difficult in practice for users who are only familiar with the classical, object-oriented way of thinking, and are not confident with the multi-level approach. In this paper, we introduce the concepts of a new language above DMLAScript, which supports the more effective manipulation of concrete domain models by taking advantage of the particular process of multi-level modeling within DMLA. Although the approach is technically bound to DMLA, the concepts discussed in the paper are of general use.

Subject domains are often conceptualized with entities stratified into a rigid two-level structure: a level of classes and a level of individuals which instantiate these classes. multi-level modeling extends the conventional two-level classification scheme by admitting classes that are also instances of other classes, a feature which is key in a number of subject domains. Despite the advances in multi-level modeling in the last decade, a number of requirements arising from representation needs in subject domains have not yet been addressed in current modeling approaches. In this paper, we tackle this issue by proposing an expressive multi-level conceptual modeling language (dubbed ML2). We follow a principled approach in the design of ML2, constructing its abstract syntax as to reflect a formal theory for multi-level modeling (termed MLT*). We show that ML2 enables the expression of a number of multi-level modeling scenarios that cannot be currently expressed in the existing multi-level modeling languages. A textual syntax for ML2 is provided with an implementation in Xtext.

In many important subject domains, there are central real-world phenomena that span across multiple classification levels. In these subject domains, besides having the traditional type-level domain regularities (classes) that classify multiple concrete instances, we also have higher order type-level regularities (metaclasses) that classify multiple instances that are themselves types. multi-level modeling aims to address this technical challenge. Despite the advances in this area in the last decade, a number of requirements arising from representation needs in subject domains have not yet been addressed in current modeling approaches. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing an expressive multi-level conceptual modeling language (dubbed ML2). We follow a principled language engineering approach in the design of ML2, constructing its abstract syntax as to reflect a fully axiomatized theory for multi-level modeling (termed MLT*). We show that ML2 enables the expression of a number of multi-level modeling scenarios that cannot be currently expressed in the existing multi-level modeling languages. A textual syntax for ML2 is provided with an implementation in Xtext. We discuss how the formal theory influences the language in two aspects: (i) by providing rigorous justification for the language's syntactic rules, which follow MLT* theorems and (ii) by forming the basis for model simulation and verification. We show that the language can reveal problems in multilevel taxonomic structures, using Wikidata fragments to demonstrate the language's practical relevance.

Using traditional semantic data modeling, multi-level modeling can be achieved by representing objects in different abstraction hierarchies, namely classification, aggregation and generalization. This, however, leads to accidental complexity, complicating maintenance and extension. Several modeling techniques, like deep instantiation, powertypes and materialization, have been proposed to reduce unnecessary complexity in modeling objects at multiple levels. multilevel objects (m-objects) and multi-level relationships (m-relationships) build on these results and provide a natural, intuitive representation of the concretization of objects and relationships along multiple levels of abstraction. By integrating aspects of the different abstraction hierarchies in a single concretization hierarchy, they improve readability and simplify maintenance and extension as compared to previous approaches. The discussion on conceptual modeling is complemented by a brief presentation of M-SQL, a data manipulation and query language for working with m-objects and m-relationships in an object-relational setting.

In model-based systems engineering projects, engineers from multiple domains collaborate by establishing a common system model. multi-level modeling is a technique that can be used to model the development from abstract ideas to concrete implementations. However, current multi-level modeling approaches are not adequate for processes with multiple modeling phases that might have to be rearranged later. In this paper, we introduce multi-phase modeling that utilizes concepts of multi-level modeling by considering a description of the expected phase ordering per domain. Constraints aware of this context can express that certain elements are only valid in specific phases without having to determine a concrete phase ordering for a particular model. This enables using multi-phase modeling in flexible workflows, adapting to changing requirements and the definition of access rules in domain notation. We show feasibility of this multi-phase modeling by applying it to multiple real-life systems engineering projects of the aerospace domain.

Quality prediction and analysis for large-scale processes based on multi-level principal component modeling strategy

This paper proposed a multi-level principal component regression (PCR) modeling strategy for quality prediction and analysis of large-scale processes. Based on decomposition of the large data matrix, the first level PCR model divides the process into different sub-blocks through uncorrelated principal component directions, with a related index defined for determination of variables in each sub-block. In the second level, a PCR model is developed for local quality prediction in each sub-block. Subsequently, the third level PCR model is constructed to combine the local prediction results in different sub-blocks. For process analysis, a sub-block contribution index is defined to identify the critical-to-quality sub-blocks, based on which an inside sub-block contribution index is further defined for determination of the key variables in each sub-block. As a result, correlations between process variables and quality variables can be successfully constructed. A case study on Tennessee Eastman (TE) benchmark process is provided for performance evaluation. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Since the late 1980s, there has been a growing interest in the use of foundational ontologies to provide a sound theoretical basis for the discipline of conceptual modeling. This has led to the development of ontology-based conceptual modeling techniques whose modeling primitives reflect the conceptual categories defined in a foundational ontology. The ontology-based conceptual modeling language OntoUML, for example, incorporates the distinctions underlying the taxonomy of types in the Unified Foundational Ontology (UFO) (e.g., kinds, phases, roles, mixins, etc.). This approach has focused so far on the support to types whose instances are individuals in the subject domain, with no provision for types of types (or categories of categories). In this paper we address this limitation by extending the Unified Foundational Ontology with the MLT multi-level theory. The UFO-MLT combination serves as a foundation for conceptual models that can benefit from the ontological distinctions of UFO as well as MLT's basic concepts and patterns for multi-level modeling. We discuss the impact of the extended foundation to multi-level conceptual modeling.

As the scale, complexity, and scope of software-intensive systems continue to grow, so does the importance of synergistically integrating two important emerging paradigms in software engineering multi-level modeling and multi-view modeling. While stable tooling for both has been developed by research institutions in recent years, to date no tool has attempted to integrate the two at a fundamental level. In this paper, we describe some first steps we have taken in this direction by integrating the Vitruvius V-SUM-based multi-view environment with the Melanee multi-level modeling environment. In particular, we show how Vitruvius's Reactions language, which allows different models in Vitruvius V-SUMs to be kept consistent, can be extended to support multi-level V-SUMs and views represented in Melanee's dialect of multi-level modeling.
