On Downlink Resource Allocation for SWIPT in Small Cells in a Two-Tier HetNet

We study the downlink resource allocation problem for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in small cells underlaying a macrocell in a two-tier heterogeneous network. For SWIPT, we consider both time-switching and power-splitting approaches. We determine downlink transmit power of small cell base stations along with time-switching/power-splitting variables for SWIPT to jointly optimize energy harvesting rate and achievable throughput of small cell users while ensuring minimum throughput of macrocell user. In the time-switching approach, the resource allocation problem is formulated as a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem. The formulated MINLP problem is solved by relaxing the binary integer constraint and then identifying the condition at which the obtained solution satisfies that constraint. In both the time-switching and power-splitting approaches, in the presence of non-negligible co-tier interference, the formulated problem is solved sub-optimally by iteratively maximizing the minorant of the non-convex objective function. A special case with negligible co-tier interference is considered in the time-switching approach and the optimal solution is obtained by using convex optimization techniques. Numerical results demonstrate significant gain in energy harvesting rate when macrocell users have flexible interference tolerance levels in time-switching approach, highlight the improvement in energy harvesting rate in the presence of co-tier interference signal, and reveal interesting trade-off in achievable throughput and energy harvesting rate.

Performance of the MOSA method for the bicriteria assignment problem

The classical linear Assignment problem is considered with two objectives. The aim is to generate the set of efficient solutions. An exact method is first developed based on the two-phase approach. In the second phase a new upper bound is proposed so that larger instances can be solved exactly. The so-called MOSA (multi-objective Simulated Annealing) is then recalled;its efficiency is improved by initialization with a greedy approach. Its results are compared to those obtained with the exact method. Extensive numerical experiments have been realized to measure the performance of the MOSA method.

Scenario-based multi-objective AVI reader location models under different travel demand patterns

Recently, a multi-objective model for locating the automatic vehicle identification (AVI) readers in a transportation network was proposed by the authors along with its solution procedure. The model locates the AVI readers by simultaneously considering three objectives: the equipment and installation cost (e.g. number of AVI readers), the coverage of the AVI system (e.g. number of origin-destination (O-D) pairs), and the amount/quality of travel information obtained (e.g. number of AVI readings). However, only a single travel demand pattern for a certain time period, such as the evening peak hour, was considered in determining the AVI reader locations. Therefore, the recommended AVI system may not be able to guarantee the amount of travel information gathered during other time periods. This study extends our previously proposed model by developing three scenario-based models to accommodate different travel demand patterns observed during the whole day. A case study is provided to illustrate the applicability of the new models and the robustness of the AVI system designed by considering different travel demand patterns.

Enhancement of restoration service in distribution systems using a combination fuzzy-GA method

This work presents a combination fuzzy-GA method to resolve the service restoration problem, The problem formulation proposed herein considers five different objective functions related to maximizing the amount of total load to he restored as well as minimizing the number of the switching operations, deviation of the bus voltage, the feeder's current and transformer's loading. Meanwhile, the operational constraints, radial structure of the network configuration and sequence of the switching operations are included in the problem formulation. These objective functions are modeled with fuzzy sets to evaluate their imprecise nature. In the interactive method, the dispatcher provides his or her anticipated value (the degree of preference) of each objective, then the optimization problem is solved by the genetic algorithm. Analyzing the results from the former interactive and updating the expected value of each objective function via the interactive procedure allow us to derive the compromised or satisfied solution efficiently, Simulation results obtained from the Tai-power system demonstrate the effectiveness of the solution algorithm.

In active distribution networks, high penetration of distributed photovoltaic power generation may cause voltage fluctuation and violation issues. To conquer the challenges, this paper firstly proposes a load-weighted voltage deviation index (LVDI) to quantify network voltage deviation. Secondly, this paper proposes a multi-objective adaptive voltage/VAR control (VVC) framework which coordinates multiple devices in multiple timescales to minimize voltage deviation and power loss simultaneously. Then, a multi-objective adaptive robust optimization method is proposed to obtain robust Pareto solutions under uncertainties. Accordingly, solution algorithms based on different multi-objective programming algorithms and a column-and-constraint generation algorithm are developed and systematically compared. The proposed method is verified through comprehensive tests on the IEEE 123-bus system and simulation results demonstrate high effectiveness of the LVDI, high efficiency of the solution algorithms and full operating robustness of the proposed VVC method against any uncertainty realization.

What Foreclosed Homes Should a Municipality Purchase to Stabilize Vulnerable Neighborhoods?

Over the past 3 years, increased rates of mortgage foreclosures in the U.S. have resulted in widespread bankruptcies of financial institutions and massive losses of consumer wealth. The effects have been especially pronounced in economically vulnerable regions. In response, municipalities and community-based organizations provide a variety of services to mitigate the effects of foreclosures. Purchases of foreclosed properties represent a particularly attractive strategy because they have the potential to minimize blight, reduce unanticipated housing mobility, and to provide affordable homeownership opportunities. Since the cost of such purchases far exceeds the resources available in most urban centers, not-for-profit managers must solve the following decision problem: What subset of a large number of available foreclosed properties should be acquired for neighborhood stabilization and revitalization? In this paper, we present an extension of the multi-objective nonlinear knapsack problem to generate alternative portfolios of foreclosed multifamily rental properties to jointly optimize social benefits, social costs and equity. We apply our model to the Massachusetts city of Lowell, which has faced sharp increases in foreclosures since 2006. A subset of available Pareto-optimal solutions displays policy-relevant variation in decision space and objective space. We identify a promising compromise solution that places greatest emphasis on the goal of maximizing proximity of acquired units, and compare model results with strategies derived from heuristics inspired by real-life applications.

Bi-objective optimization-based multi-criteria decision-making framework for disassembly line balancing and employee assignment problem

PurposeAlthough disassembly balancing lines has been studied for over two decades, there is a gap in the robotic disassembly. Moreover, combination of problem with heterogeneous employee assignment is also lacking. The hazard related with the tasks performed on disassembly lines on workers can be reduced by the use of robots or collaborative robots (cobots) instead of workers. This situation causes an increase in costs. The purpose of the study is to propose a novel version of the problem and to solve this bi-objective (minimizing cost and minimizing hazard simultaneously) ***/methodology/approachThe epsilon constraint method was used to solve the bi-objective model. Entropy-based Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and Preference Ranking Organization methods for Enrichment Evaluation (PROMETHEE) methods were used to support the decision-maker. In addition, a new criterion called automation rate was proposed. The effects of factors were investigated with full factor experiment *** effects of all factors were found statistically significant on the solution time. Sensitivity of efficiency classifications in the inverse DEA models

The previous methods of sensitivity analysis have restricted attention to technical aspects of efficiency. Evaluations arising from prices, costs and preference on decision making units (DMUs) are not addressed in these methods. In this paper, we propose a modified version of inverse data envelopment analysis (DEA) models for sensitivity of efficiency classifications of efficient and inefficient DMUs in which important policies over inputs, outputs and DMUs are represented by preference cones. We use the non-dominated solutions of the modified version of inverse DEA to obtain the Lipper and lower bounds of inputs and outputs variations range. Some new generalized aggregation operators for triangular intuitionistic fuzzy numbers and application to multi-attribute group decision making

The aim of this paper is to develop some new generalized aggregation operators for triangular intuitionistic fuzzy numbers (TIFNs) and apply to multi-attribute group decision making (MAGDM) problems. First, the weighted possibility attitudinal expected values of TIFNs are defined and a new method is presented to rank TIFNs considering risk attitude of decision maker (DM). The sensitivity analyses on attitudinal character parameter are given. Then, the triangular intuitionistic fuzzy weighted averaging (TIFWA) operator, ordered weighted averaging (TIFOWA) operator, ordered weighted geometric (TIFOWG) operator and hybrid weighted averaging (TIFHWA) operator are defined. We further develop some new generalized aggregation operators for TIFNs, involving the triangular intuitionistic fuzzy generalized ordered weighted averaging (TIFGOWA) operator and generalized hybrid weighted averaging (TIFGHWA) operator. Some desirable properties for these operators are discussed in detail. Utilizing the TIFGHWA and TIFWA operators, we propose a new method for MAGDM with TIFNs and incomplete weight information. In this method, DMs' weights are determined by Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and the weights of attributes are objectively derived through constructing a multi-objective programming model which is transformed into a linear goal program to solve. Concurrent cell formation and layout design using scatter search

Two key decisions in designing cellular manufacturing systems are cell formation and layout design problems. In the cell formation problem, machine groups and part families are determined while in the facility layout problem the location of each machine in each cell (intra-cell layout) and the location of each cell (inter-cell layout) are decided. Owing to the fact that there are interactions between two problems, cell formation and layout design problem must be tackled concurrently to design a productive manufacturing system. In this research, two problems are investigated concurrently. Some important and realistic factors such as inter-cell layout, intra-cell layout, operations sequence, part demands, batch size, number of cells, cell size, and variable process routings are incorporated in the problem. The problem is formulated as a mathematical model. Three different methods are described to solve the problem: multi-objective scatter search (MOSS), non-dominated genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), and the epsilon-constraint method. The methods are employed to solve nine problems generated and adopted from the literature. Sensitivity analysis is accomplished on the parameters of the problem to investigate the effects of them on objective function values. The results show that the proposed MOSS algorithm performs better than NSGA-II and produces better solutions in comparison to multi-stage approaches.
