This theme section aims to disseminate the latest research results in the area of multi-paradigm modeling for Cyber-Physical Systems (MPM4CPS). MPM has a long tradition within the Model-Driven Engineering community, e.g., several workshops have been held at the MODELS conference for over more than a decade. The MPM4CPS workshop series is a continuation of the successful MPM workshop series with a stronger focus on CPS as especially these systems pose several new challenges on the engineering process and beyond. This theme section covers papers on the foundations and applications of MPM for CPS. In total, we accepted five submissions for publication in the theme section after a thorough peer-reviewing process.

multi-paradigm Modelling (MPM) offers a foundational framework for connecting several engineering disciplines in a comprehensive and consistent way which is of particular importance for Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). The MPM4CPS Workshop acts as a continuation of the successful MPM Workshop series hosted at the MODELS, but focuses on the application of the MPM approach to CPSs. The workshop aims at further advancing the state-of-the-art as well as identifying future research lines by bringing together international experts from academia and industry.

This paper presents our early-stage research on a multi-paradigm modeling (MPM) approach as an initial step towards the definition of a Digital Twin (DT) for Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPSs). This work takes place in the context of the digitalization of the mail sorting process at La Poste, the French national postal service company. Indeed, La Poste is currently investing on robotics modules for automatically loading mail containers. The main objective is to reduce the painful work for human operators while optimizing the robots usage. We already worked on targeting such a balance in a past effort that resulted in the production of different kinds of models of the La Poste CPPS. However, these models were defined separately and are not directly related to the underlying business process in particular. Thus, we propose an MPM approach starting from this business process as now modeled explicitly in a BPMN model. Then, we refine the high-level business activities into finer-grained activities represented in a UML Activity model. From these latest, we derive the specification of a multi-Agent System (MAS) developed with the JADE framework and emulating the behavior of the La Poste CPPS. Our longer term objective is to pave the way for supporting the definition of a DT for this CPPS, and potentially for other CPPSs in different contexts in the future.

multi-paradigm modeling (MPM) is a common term aimed at using multiple modeling paradigms by combining different levels of abstraction and views, each expressed in appropriate modeling formalisms. Recently, our research group has started investigating the capabilities of our multi-layer framework, the Dynamic multiLayer Algebra (DMLA) in the context of multi-paradigm modeling. multi-layer modeling is a new modeling paradigm originated from multi-level modeling, offering a highly flexible abstraction management through its advanced deep instantiation and domain linking formalism. Following the mantra of "modeling everything explicitly, at the right level of abstraction(s), using the most appropriate formalism(s)", we have to solve both a horizontal (across domains) and a vertical (across abstraction levels) issue to address the heterogeneity problem of models. For the vertical issue, DMLA provides the step-wise refinement of features. In DMLA, it is allowed to have a domain concept containing several components, some of which are concrete, while others are more abstract, i.e. not yet specified completely. Instantiation works as a refinement between two entities. Namely, the meta entity defines the abstract structural and behavioral rules that instances must obey through concretization of those abstractions. The number of instantiation steps is not limited: one can use as many instantiation steps as needed in order to derive concrete instance objects from abstract concepts. In fact, as we descend the instantiation hierarchy, more and more constraints are being attached and the constraints are getting more and more strict in order to further concretize the intermittent entities until the most concrete objects - with all of their fields set to concrete values have been reached. We believe that this behavior closely reflects the vertical aspect of MPM. For the horizontal issue, we propose a solution which is capable of validating consistency among separate domain models.

Computational notebooks are gaining widespread acceptance as a paradigm for storage, dissemination, and reproduction of experimental results. In this paper, we define the computational notebook paradigm (CNP) consisting of entities and processes and discuss how the reproducibility of the experimental process and results is enhanced by each element. This paper also details the interactions of CNP and multi-paradigm modeling (MPM), with an aim of understanding how to support MPM within the CNP, and improve the reproducibility aspects of both the CNP and MPM.

The domain of healthcare is characterized by a high degree of complexity and a diversity of perspectives, and modelers are often confronted with the challenge of formulating a simulation model that captures this complexity in a systematic and manageable manner. Most often, the diverse perspectives of healthcare systems are studied in isolation and using specific formalisms. As it turns out, answering questions concerning behavioral properties of the overall system becomes difficult and therefore not sufficient for an efficient design and analysis of the system under study. In this article, we propose a framework for multi-paradigm modeling and holistic simulation of healthcare systems. We present a modeling methodology with a plethora of formalisms to allow the modeler to choose an appropriate formalism at a given level of abstraction while model transformation relates the different formalisms. Furthermore, we develop an integrative approach for the interactions between models of different perspectives through dynamic update of model output-to-parameter integration during concurrent simulations. Such an approach provides multiple levels of explanation for the same system, while offering, at the same time, an integrated view of the whole. The framework has successfully been applied to study part of the Nigerian healthcare system.

Enterprise-wide optimization(EWO) requires the integrated optimization of models for production planning, scheduling and control in the refinery decision supporting system. When modeling for a refinery, the modeling objects are the same. Due to incompatible modeling paradigms and modeling software, the modeling objects are difficult to be shared between different models. In this paper, ontology-driven modeling(ODM) is used to support the multi-paradigm modeling for refinery. In ODM, the refinery modeling objects are stored in the PUO domain ontology and the different modeling paradigms are separately represented as modeling ontologies. Through the mapping from the domain ontology to modeling ontologies, models represented as instances of modeling ontologies can be developed, which can be transformed into executable formats in modeling tools. Compared with traditional modeling systems, ODM can share refinery domain knowledge between different paradigm models and has higher productivity.

Architecting decentralized control in large-scale self-adaptive systems

Architecting a self-adaptive system with decentralized control is challenging. Indeed, architects shall consider several different and interdependent design dimensions and devise multiple control loops to coordinate and timely perform the correct adaptations. To support this task, we propose Decor, a reasoning framework for architecting and evaluating decentralized control. Decor provides (i) multi-paradigm modeling support, (ii) a modeling environment for MAPE-K style decentralized control, and (iii) a co-simulation environment for simulating the decentralized control together with the managed system and estimating the quality attributes of interest. We apply the Decor in three case studies: an intelligent transportation system, a smart power grid, and a cloud computing application. The studies demonstrate the framework's capabilities to support informed architectural decisions on decentralized control and adaptation strategies.
