With the advance of multi-view video codec (MVC) technology, the multimedia platform can display videos of different views. The distributed video coder (DVC) that adopts the Wynzer-Ziv (WZ) codec can shift encoding complexity to decoder under the MVC framework, denoted as multi-view DVC (MDVC), for possible low-complexity encoder applications. For side information (SI) generation, the intra-and inter-view video correlations among images in MDVC were exploited to improve the SI confidence to yield better reconstructed WZ images. We proposed a new block matching and prediction (BMP) algorithm based on Scale Invariant Feature Transform, abbreviated as SIFT-BMP, to yield more accurate SI to improve the reconstructed video quality. Simulations verified that the proposed SIFT-BMP yielded more accurate SI and higher PSNR of reconstructed images, as compared to previous methods. The PSNR improvements are 1.6 similar to 2.5 dB and higher, as compared to MCTI and H. 264/AVC, for medium to high complexity videos.

An efficient error concealment algorithm for reconstructing the loss frame in multi-view video sequences at the decoder is presented. The proposed method has a capacity of adopting the appropriate error concealment mode to recover the loss frame according to its reference frames similarity level. There are three modes in the method. For a high similarity level, the mode using temporal related frame copy (FC) to recover the lost frame is employed. When the similarity level is low, the spatially related frame is copied. Adapting to the medium similarity condition, both the similar MBs in temporal frames and the matching MBs in spatial frames are used to reconstruct the loss frame. And block matching principle is employed for filling empty blocks. Experimental results have shown that the proposed multi-view video error concealment method can effectively reconstruct the lost frames and has more attractive performance than previous algorithms.

Most of the traditional block-matching algorithms for motion estimation (ME) can only yield local optimal motion vectors (MVs). In this paper, the autoregressive moving average process (ARMA) model is selected to formulate the correlation of neighboring blocks in a frame, and the adaptive Kalman filtering algorithm is applied to refine the MVs. The horizontal and vertical ARMA models are constructed to utilize the filtering algorithm twice to get a better performance. Our method can also be extended to realize disparity estimation (DE) in order to apply it in a multi-view video coding (MVC) system. The experiment results show the effectiveness of our method to improve the accuracy of conventional fast block matching algorithms.

Ein zukünftiges dreidimensionales Fernsehen kommt ohne Spezialbrillen aus. Die dazu nötigen autostereoskopischen Displays müssen allerdings auf das Stereosehen abgestimmt sein. Kritisch ist die Information über die Tiefe eines Objekts im Bild. Auf die Tiefeninformation ist die gesamte Verarbeitungskette eines zukünftigen 3D-Fernsehsystems ausgerichtet. Dieser Beitrag beschreibt alle Schritte von der Aufnahme mit Stereokameras, die wesentlichen Grundregeln der 3D-Produktion, die Kalibrierung der Kameras, die Übertragung bis hin zum Empfänger. Zentral ist die automatische Erstellung von Tiefenkarten der Szenen. Sie erlauben eine zuverlässige 3D-Rekonstruktion in verschiedenartigen Endgeräten. Zudem sind sie wichtig für eine komprimierte, wirtschaftliche Signalübertragung. Autostereoskopische 3D-TV-Displays errechnen aus den empfangenen videobildern und ihren Tiefenkarten Zwischenbilder für wechselnde Zuschauerperspektiven. Das ist der Schlüssel zu einem komfortablen 3D-Fernsehen ohne Spezialbrille.

multi-view video is becoming increasingly popular, as it provides users greatly enhanced viewing experience. multi-view video coding (MVC) focuses on exploiting not only the temporal correlation among the adjacent pictures for each view, but also inter-view correlation. Though the coding efficiency is a key target for MVC, the view-temporal prediction structure for improving the compression efficiency usually results in the decoding delay and limits the random access ability. Random access ability is an important feature in MVC because it provides the view switching, temporal frame sweepingly browsing and other interactive abilities for the client users in multi-view video streaming. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to flexibly regulate the view-temporal prediction structure. It is able to achieve a good trade-off between compression performance and random access ability.

Disparity estimation can be used for eliminating redundancies between different views of an object or a scene recorded by an array of cameras which are arranged both horizontally and vertically. However, estimation of the disparity vectors is a highly time consuming process which takes most of the operation time of the multi-view video coding. Therefore, either the amount of data that is to be processed or the complexity of the coding method needs to be decreased in order to encode the multi-view video in a reasonable time. It is proven that the disparities of a point in the scene photographed by cameras which are spaced equidistantly are equal. Since there is a strong geometrical correlation of the disparity vectors, the disparity vector of a view can for most blocks be derived from the disparity vector of another view or views. A new algorithm is presented that reduces the amount of processing time needed for calculating the disparity vectors of each neighboring view except the principal ones. Different schemes are proposed for 3x3 views and they are applied to several image sequences taken from a camera-array. The experimental results show that the proposed schemes yield better results than the reference scheme while preserving the image quality and the amount of encoded data.

Bit allocation and rate control algorithm for MVC

Since the current multi-view video coding (MVC) software does not contain any rate control technique, this paper proposes a rate control algorithm for MVC based on the quadratic rate-distortion (R–D) model. The proposed algorithm classifies each picture into six frame types based on the relation between disparity prediction and temporal prediction estimation and also improves the estimation accuracy of the mean absolute difference (MAD). The proposed method allocates the bits and controls the rate for inter-view, frame layer and basic unit layer based on the analysis of the previously coded information. Compared to the multi-view video coding with fixed quantisation parameter, the proposed scheme achieves up to 0·25 dB improvements in peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Meanwhile, it can efficiently control the bit-rate with an average rate control error of 0·54%.

There are mainly two key points which can affect the efficiency of multi-view video capture and transmission system largely: communication between cameras and computing complexity of encoder. In this paper, we propose a practical framework of distributed multi-view video coding, in which inter-camera communication is avoided and the large computing complexity is moved from encoder to decoder. In this scheme, multi-camera video sources are encoded separately and decoded dependently, and the traditional inter frame is replaced by Wyner-Ziv frame. To reach this goal, Wyner-Ziv theory on source coding with side information is employed as the basic coding principle. A Wyner-Ziv coding method based on wavelet transform and turbo codes is used as the core of the scheme. To further improve the coding performance, we also consider exploiting the large redundancy between adjacent views. A more flexible prediction method that can jointly use temporal and view correlations is proposed to generate the side information at the decoder. The experimental results show that the coding performance of proposed DMVC scheme is very promising compared to the traditional intra coding.

Exploiting redundancy is the hallmark of traditional video coding but is even more essential in multi-view video coding (MVC). The exploitation of additional redundancies, however, incurs extra computational complexity, counteracting the benefits gained from coding efficiency. In this paper, we propose an efficient segmentation scheme for MVC, which aims to lower complexity while achieving high coding efficiency in MVC. The proposed scheme is applied to the base view in MVC using the intensity of decoded frames and motion vectors of base view, which can be also recovered by the decoder. Therefore, no segmentation masks need to be encoded. So that increase of complexity and output bit rate from segmentation can be limited, allowing fast and on-line processing. The segmented objects in base view are then applied to an object-based MVC, which using object registration and warping to predict enhancement views (EVs) and initial disparity maps of EVs. These features are utilized in lowering the complexity of EVs' coding. The experimental results show that the proposed technique provides high quality and consistent segmentation masks with low computational complexity. In addition, by applying the proposed scheme, high coding efficiency and low complexity object-based MVC is achieved.

For future applications like 3DTV and free view point TV, the video data format is likely to comprise of multiple views plus pre-estimated geometric information such as a depth-map corresponding to each view. It has been well studied that the depth-maps are useful both from compression and rendering perspective. In this paper, we propose two methods which use the concept of depth based 3D warping for efficient multiview video compression. First, we present a method to synthesize virtual view based on 3D warping to enhance inter-view prediction. We analyze similar previous works on view synthesis based inter-view prediction and present comparative results. Next, we propose a novel method that uses 3D warping to improve conventional disparity compensated prediction. Experimental results demonstrate improved coding efficiency with our proposed methods when compared with MVC.
