In this paper, a frame compatible format fast encoder with stereo matching is proposed. Through packing the two neighboring views after down-sampling into one frame, the frame compatible format coding allows stereo video to be encoded on the conventional video applications. The matching of content similarity is the key of the fast encoder of Frame Compatible Format (FCF) H.264. Experiments show that the stereo matching can achieve a better result than simply using a shift obtaining method. This paper gives a statistical analysis of the prediction correlation between the two packed views in FCF by using different method to prove that the system can obtain much better results with stereo matching method. A modified fast stereo matching algorithm which is suitable for FCF fast encoding is introduced. Finally, the process and simulated results of stereo matching combined frame compatible format fast encoder is shown. Through the experimental result, the proposed algorithm can obtain a better result than the previous work. It can achieve better video quality, less PSNR lost and the lower bit rate increment.

3D video coding for transmission exploits the Disparity Estimation (DE) to remove the inter-view redundancies present within both the texture and the depth map multi-view videos. Good estimation accuracy can be achieved by partitioning the macro-block into smaller sub-blocks partitions. However, the DE process must be performed on each individual sub-block to determine the optimal mode and their disparity vectors, in terms of rate-distortion efficiency. This vector estimation process is heavy on computational resources, thus, the coding computational cost becomes proportional to the number of search points and the inter-view modes tested during the rate-distortion optimization. In this paper, a solution that exploits the available depth map data, together with the multi-view geometry, is proposed to identify a better DE search area;such that it allows a reduction in its search points. It also exploits the number of different depth levels present within the current macro-block to determine which modes can be used for DE to further reduce its computations. Simulation results demonstrate that this can save up to 95% of the encoding time, with little influence on the coding efficiency of the texture and the depth map multi-view video coding. This makes 3D video coding more practical for any consumer devices, which tend to have limited computational power(1).

In this paper, a histogram clustering threshold based on color correction method is proposed for multi-view video coding. To fmd the maximum matching regions for the reference-view frame and the target view-frame, SAD is performed. By using an iterative histogram clustering threshold, a minimum histogram difference between the reference-view frame and the target-view frame is computed to correct the target-view frame. Experimental results have shown that the proposed color correction method outperforms the other histogram matching method on the aspect of the PSNR and computation time.

High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) is the newest video coding standard, which is developed by the Joint Collaborative Team on video coding (JCT-VC) consisting of ITUT video coding Experts Group (VCEG) and ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). To improve the coding efficiency, HEVC adopts many new key techniques, such as coding tree unit, prediction unit, transform unit, multi-angle intra prediction, variable PU motion estimation, sample adaptive offset, and so on. Compared with its predecessor-H.264/AVC, HEVC is able to save about 50% bit rate while maintaining almost the same perceptual video quality. This paper aims to illustrate the key techniques of the HEVC standard and preview its extension in the near future.

In this paper, a framework of region-of-interest (ROI) based multi-view video coding has been proposed to improve compression efficiency by properly segmenting the multi-view videos into different macroblock level ROI and encoding them separately. We define depth based ROI for multi-view video. Then, we propose a semantic low-complexity ROI extraction algorithm based on multi-view video plus depth. ROI quality can be improved by allocating more bits on ROI regions while fewer bits are allocated to non-ROI regions for bit rate saving. Experimental results on multi-view video coding show that 11.34％ and 21.41％ bit rate can be saved for Ballet and Breakdancers sequences while maintaining high objective quality of ROI regions and high subjective quality of the multi-view videos.

In the free viewpoint television systems, video coder often has to operate within fixed bandwidth limitations over the network. This paper firstly shows detailed coding results at the target bit rates and selects the optimal combinations of quantization parameters (QPs) for video and depth. Then the joint coding for multi-view video plus depth which utilizes the optimal combination of the QPs is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed coding method decreases the bit-rate by 16.07%similar to 24.02% in comparison with JMVC, while the proposed method has better performance in optimizing the tradeoff between bit-rate and visual quality. Motion and disparity estimations are employed in multi-view video coding (MVC) to remove redundancies present between temporal and different viewpoint frames, respectively, in both the color and the depth multi-view videos. These constitute the major computational expensive tasks of the video encoder, as iterative search for the optimal mode and its appropriate compensation vectors is employed to reduce the Rate-Distortion Optimization (RDO) cost function. This paper proposes a solution to limit the number of modes that are tested for RDO to encode the inter-view predicted views. The decision is based on the encoded information obtained from the corresponding Macro-block in the Base view, identified accurately by using the multi-view geometry together with the depth data. Results show that this geometric technique manages to reduce about 70% of the estimation's computational time and can also be used with fast geometric estimations to reduce up to 95% of the original encoding time. These gains are obtained with little degradation on the multi-view video quality for both color and depth MVC.

Recently, multi-view distributed video coding (MDVC) receives more and more attention, as its low-complexity encoder and high-complexity decoder coding paradigm suits for many applications such as sensor networks, in which several view sequences are required to be coded by a few power-constraint encoders. Modeling the correlation noises between original frame and side information frame is a hot research issue in distributed video coding (DVC), since it is a vital factor affecting the coding efficiency. This paper firstly proposes a novel method to model the correlation noises in MDVC. And an algorithm to online estimate the model at decoder using the knowledge of adjacent views is also presented. Experiment results show that the proposed correlation model can significantly improve coding efficiency.

This paper proposes a multi-hypothesis based Wyner-Ziv (WZ) decoder for the multi-view distributed video coding (MDVC). Two hypotheses, the intra-view SI and the interview SI, are fed together into the WZ decoder in the proposed scheme. A multi-hypothesis based correlation model (MHBCM) is presented to fully exploit the redundancy between these two SI frames and the original frame. The MHBCM is also applied on the optimal minimum mean-square error reconstruction of the quantized samples. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithms are able to significantly improve the coding efficiency of the MDVC system.

multi-view video coding is an international encoding standard that attains good performance by fully utilizing temporal and inter-view correlations. However, it suffers from high computational complexity. This paper presents a fast encoder design to reduce the level of complexity. First, when the temporal correlation of a group of pictures is sufficiently strong, macroblock-based inter-view prediction is not employed for the non-anchor pictures of B-views. Second, when the disparity between two adjacent views is above some threshold, frame-based inter-view prediction is disabled. Third, inter-view prediction is not performed on boundary macroblocks in the auxiliary views, because the references for these blocks may not exist in neighboring views. Fourth, finer partitions of inter-view prediction are cancelled for macroblocks in static image areas. Finally, when estimating the disparity of a macroblock, the search range is adjusted according to the mode size distribution of the neighboring view. Compared with reference software, these techniques produce an average time reduction of 83.65%, while the bit-rate increase and peak signal-to-noise ratio loss are less than 0.54% and 0.05dB, respectively.
