Tooling and system support for authoring multi-device applications

This paper presents a development model, tooling environment, and system support for building and deploying applications targeted to run on multiple heterogeneous end-user devices. Our approach is based on a device-independent application model and consists of three elements: (1) an automated process of specialization, by which device-specific versions of the application are generated, (2) support for hand-customization of generated applications, a process we call tweaking, both within our workbench and using external editors, and (3) a designer-in-the-loop process of generalization, by which a generic model is inferred from concrete interface artifacts such as HTML pages. We argue that this approach is cost-effective and results in usable applications that run on a variety of devices. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Cross-platform mobile and web applications become increasingly popular among users. As users begin to use multiple devices, their behavior patterns start to migrate from single-device to multi-device scenarios, where multiple devices are used sequentially or complementary to interact with a user and gather context information. Application developers should follow these trends and focus on multi-device aspects of their applications but efficient and cost effective application development requires proven frameworks and architectures, which are missing in this field. In this paper we identify key aspects of context-aware multi-device device-independent applications that should be supported by such tools and we propose a new application architecture. The presented architecture and conclusions are based on experimental implementations of a sample context-aware device-independent multi-device application called LifeLog.

The market for personal computing devices is rapidly expanding from PC, to mobile, home entertainment systems, and even the automotive industry. When developing software targeting such ubiquitous devices, the balance between development costs and market coverage has turned out to be a challenging issue. With the rise of Web technology and the Internet of things, ubiquitous applications have become a reality. Nonetheless, the diversity of presentation and interaction modalities still drastically limit the number of targetable devices and the accessibility toward end users. This paper presents webinos, a multi-device application middleware platform founded on the Future Internet infrastructure. Hereto, the platform's architectural modifiability considerations are described and evaluated as a generic enabler for supporting applications, which are executed in ubiquitous computing environments.

By utilizing the complementary advantages in screen size, network speed and processing power, the computing devices we own can work together and provide a better user experience. By separating the concerns of an application into components responsible for distinct tasks, these components can run on the different devices where they perform best. As a step towards multi-device applications, we have designed, implemented and tested a collaboration platform for application data sharing, optimized for low producer-to-consumer delay. Distribution trees are built automatically by our system based on latency, and the total producer-to-consumer delays measured in our experiments are below the delay requirements for multimedia applications. © 2012 ACM.

DEAPspace - Transient ad hoc networking of pervasive devices

The rapid spreading of mobile computerized devices marks the beginning of a new computing paradigm characterized by ad hoc networking and spontaneous interaction, taking place transparently to the human user. The DEAPspace project described in this gaper aims at providing a framework for interconnecting pervasive devices over a wireless medium. It supports the development of new proximity-based collective distributed applications. In this paper we discuss the motivation of the project and describe possible new application scenarios from which requirements for both the supporting framework and the underlying wireless medium are derived. Central research issues such as a new push-model-based approach to fast and resource efficient service discovery, and encoding and match-making of compact service descriptions, are elaborated in more detail. The paper also describes some related work and concludes with a critical review of existing wireless communication technologies, followed by a description of the current state of our project and an outlook on future research directions. The part of the Internet of Things composed of devices that directly interact with users has grown considerably in the past years. With new smartphones, tablets and other Internet-enabled devices that appear on the market, this trend is still increasing. However, existing application development processes and tools, designed for single device applications, do not allow developers to fully and efficiently address this opportunity. applications are developed for a particular type of devices or a particular programming platform. This limits the number of potential users and makes it difficult to seamlessly use an application on multiple devices owned by users. To take full advantage of the Internet of Things, applications should be able to run on any device-they should be ubiquitous. In this paper, we present a concept of device-Independent Architecture, which provides separation of applications from devices and facilitates development of device-independent applications. Additionally, the separation introduced by the device-Independent Architecture enables implementation of multi-device scenarios where a single application employs multiple devices at the same time. The experiment described in the paper proves that such device-independent applications indeed may be used on any suitable device-they have a chance to become ubiquitous.

The broad range of connected devices has turned the Internet into a ubiquitous concept. In addition to desktop and laptop PCs, the Internet currently connects mobile devices, home entertainment systems, and even in-car units. From this ubiquitous evolution towards sensor-rich devices, the opportunity arises for various new types of innovative software application. However, alongside rises the issue of managing the increasing diversity of device characteristics and capabilities. As device fragmentation grows, application developers are facing the need to cover a wider variety of target devices and usage scenarios. In result, maintaining a viable balance between development costs and market coverage has turned out to be an important challenge when developing applications for a ubiquitous ecosystem. In this article, we present the webinos platform, a distributed Web runtime platform that leverages the Web for supporting self-adaptive cross-device applications. In order to enable the development of such immersive ubiquitous applications, we introduce and evaluate the concept of a context-aware federated overlay architecture.

Nowadays, users can interact with a system using a wide variety of modalities, such as touch and speech. Nevertheless, multimodal interaction has yet to be explored for interactive visualization scenarios. Furthermore, users have access to a wide variety of devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets) that could be harnessed to provide a more versatile visualization experience, whether by providing complementary views or by enabling multiple users to jointly explore the visualization using their devices. In our effort to gather multimodal interaction and multi-device support for visualization, this paper describes our first approach to an interactive multi-device system, based on the multimodal interaction architecture proposed by the W3C, enabling interactive visualization using different devices and representations. It allows users to run the application in different types of devices, e.g., tablets or smartphones, and the visualizations can be adapted to multiple screen sizes, by selecting different representations, with different levels of detail, depending on the device characteristics. Groups of users can rely on their personal devices to synchronously visualize and interact with the same data, maintaining the ability to use a custom representation according to their personal needs. A preliminary evaluation was performed, mostly to collect users' first impressions and guide future developments. Although the results show a moderate user satisfaction, somehow expected at this early stage of development, user feedback allowed the identification of important routes for future improvement, particularly regarding a more versatile navigation along the data and the definition of composite visualizations (e.g., by gathering multiple representations on the same screen).

This paper presents an approach for translating multi-device task models to a distributed execution model based on state machines. We consider an expressive extension to ConcurTaskTrees, called multi-device ConcurTaskTrees (MCTTs) as a modeling language for distributed multi-device applications. We use the device labeling operators Any and All, which specify if user interactions at runtime shall take place on one or all of a set of devices and extend the translation algorithm for "classical" CTT operators with translation rules for these multi-device operators in a distributed setting. Our algorithm exploits concurrent and hierarchical state machines for the execution and the concept of partial state machines during the translation.
