multi-input multi-output (MIMO) wireless communication system is an emerging area which offers substantial advantages for achieving high data rate with cost effective design. The spectral efficiency and reliability of MIMO systems greatly depends on the assumption that the transmitter and/or the receiver have perfect knowledge of channel state information (CSI). Hence, it is required to predict the CSI at the receiver and send the updated CSI back to the transmitter. In this paper particularly the Frequency-Flat Rayleigh i.i.d MIMO channel is considered, where as the Rayleigh fading channel provides complex and random coefficients. These complex channel parameters are estimated by using split complex real-time recurrent learning (SCRTRL) and fully complex real-time recurrent learning (FCRTRL) algorithm based recurrent neural network (RNN) structure with complex weights. The RNN with SCRTRL and RNN with FCRTRL algorithm produced a premature convergence which is overcome by the proposed genetic algorithm (GA) based learning process. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, a low-complexity approach to implement a class of flexible frequency-band reallocation (FFBR) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) networks, which use variable oversampled complex-modulated filter banks, is introduced. Two alternatives in processing real signals using real input/output and complex input/output FFBR networks (or simply, real and complex FFBR networks, respectively) are considered. It is shown that to process each sample, the real case requires less number of real operations compared to its complex counterpart. Furthermore, the real case has a smaller growth rate in the number of real operations with respect to the prototype filter order. In addition, the real FFBR network eliminates the need for two Hilbert transformers whereas in the complex FFBR case, to achieve high efficiency in FBR, there is a need for high-order Hilbert transformers.

We present the fundamentals of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) signal processing for mode-division multiplexing (MDM) in multi-mode fiber. We review group delay management techniques that minimize adaptation time and complexity in MIMO signal processing. We describe long-period fiber grating (LPFG) devices for introducing strong mode coupling, which represent a promising practical approach for group delay management. We analyze MIMO equalization complexity, adaptation time and throughput efficiency for MDM systems employing LPFG devices.

This paper proposes an innovative dual-input dual-output (DIDO-DC) DC-DC converter for the DC microgrid applications. The proposed converter is derived from the classic buck-boost DC-DC converter. The converter has four IGBTs, two inductors, two filter capacitors and three diodes to integrate two input sources and two loads. Using this converter topology, both the loads can be powered even when one of the input sources is not available. Compared to the conventional topologies, the proposed topology has fewer component counts and low voltage stresses which improve the converter efficiency. The output voltage expressions of the DIDO-DC converter are derived from the analytical waveforms for the buck-boost mode of operation. To verify the operation of the converter, the simulation studies have been carried out using PSCAD 4.5.1 (R) software. The experimental prototype of the converter is fabricated and tested successfully in the laboratory. The measured experimental results are also presented in this paper. Finally, the performance comparison of the DIDO-DC converter with the conventional topologies is discussed.

The performance of amplify-and-forward (AF) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) two way relaying networks (TWRNs) with multiple antenna selection scheme at the sources, while having single antenna selection at the relay node is investigated to maximize the effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over flat Rayleigh fading channel. Both exact and asymptotic expressions for the sum outage probability are derived and verified through Monte Carlo simulation results. The diversity order of selection scheme is proven to be minimum of the number of antennas of the source with larger antennas and the product of the number of relay antennas with the number of antennas of the source having fewer antennas. It is shown that fewer antennas at the sources can be selected to reduce the complexity without a significant loss in performance with respect to full antenna usage, i.e., with respect to beamforming. Primary factors which affect optimum relay location are also determined.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology provides a new energy transmission solution, which completely removes the shackles of wires. Although the magnetic coupler of the WPT system has a high degree of integration, it can still avoid power fluctuation and even system failure in long-term work. In this paper, some early works of redundancy and fault-tolerant design in WPT systems are reviewed, and a kind of redundancy and fault-tolerant design method of the rotational wireless power transfer system is proposed. Both passive and active fault-tolerant control (FTC) methods for the WPT system were put forward at the same time. Two redundant coil structures of the magnetic coupler are designed by magnetic and circuit fault tolerance method of the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) WPT system. By monitoring real-time electromagnetic parameters, the fluctuation and fault of the WPT system can be quickly diagnosed and removed, and the derating operation state can be realized in time.

We propose a simple yet effective norm-based joint transmit and receive antenna selection (NBJTRAS) assisted and two-tier channel estimation (TTCE) aided space-time shift keying (STSK) system, which is capable of significantly outperforming the conventional STSK system, while efficiently utilising available radio frequency (RF) chains. Specifically, the NBJTRAS carries out antenna selection based on the channel estimation (CE) generated using a low-complexity training based least square channel estimator by reusing RF chains. The selected sub-channel matrix is further refined by an efficient semi-blind CE and data detection scheme. Our simulation results show that only a few iterations are sufficient for the TTCE scheme to approach the optimal maximum-likelihood detection performance associated with perfectly channel state information.

This paper addresses adaptive modulation and power allocation for maximizing the practicable sum capacity (sum of the uncoded throughputs of the users) of a multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) system. Since the optimal solution, dirty paper encoding (DPC), is complicated to implement, we use the simpler linear precoding based on signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (SLNR). For different choices of constellation sizes, the maximum practicable sum capacities and their corresponding optimal power allocations are obtained via individual non-convex optimization. The best constellation sizes for each user are then identified through a search for the highest maximized practicable sum capacity. Simulations demonstrate the significant performance improvement from this approach compared to existing power allocation schemes. Finally, a selection procedure between different constellation sets is presented to obtain the highest practicable sum capacity while maintaining the instantaneous BER of each user below a target value. This approach allows management of the trade-off between the capacity and error performances.

This paper presents a VLSI implementation of a high-throughput and area-efficient MIMO detector. We propose a modified Dijkstra's algorithm and a pre-calculation technique to improve the throughput by allowing overlapped processing. In addition, we propose a simple approximation of L-2-norm to reduce the computational complexity without degrading the error performance noticeably. A MIMO detector based on the proposed algorithm is implemented using a 0.18-mu m CMOS technology, which occupies 0.49 mm(2) with 25.1K equivalent gates and shows a throughput of over 300 Mbps.

DC/DC converters are widely used in different applications such as renewable energy sources, hybrid electrical vehicles, and portable electronic devices. Recently, many researches have been done on dc/dc converters to increase the reliability and modularity and reduce the cost of these converters. The multi-port dc/dc converter is one of the common converters that widely used in dc renewable energy sources. The multi-port dc/dc converters are divided into single-input multi-output, multi-input single-output, and multi-input multi-output converters. The multi-input multi-output dc/dc converters can combine the different types of dc voltage sources with different V-I characteristics in input side and generate different levels of dc voltages at the output side. The main aim of using these converters is reducing the cost and number of power electronic components and increasing the reliability and efficiency of the overall system. Until now, different topologies of multi-port dc/dc converters have been presented. In this paper, some of the multi-port dc/dc converters are overviewed. Moreover, their advantages and disadvantages are investigated.
