Adaptive regulation of MIMO linear systems against unknown sinusoidal exogenous inputs

This paper deals with the adaptive regulation problem in linear multi-input multi-output systems subject to unknown sinusoidal exogenous inputs, where the frequencies, amplitudes, and phases of the sinusoids are unknown and where the number of sinusoids is assumed to be known. The design of an adaptive regulator for the system under consideration is performed within a set of Q-parameterized stabilizing controllers. To facilitate the design of the adaptive regulator, triangular decoupling is introduced in part of the closed-loop system dynamics. This is achieved through the proper selection of the controller state feedback gain and the structure of the Q parameter. Regulation conditions are then presented for the case where the sinusoidal exogenous input properties are known. For the case where the sinusoidal exogenous input properties are unknown, an adaptation algorithm is proposed to tune the Q parameter in the expression of the parameterized controller. The online tuning of the Q parameter allows the controller to converge to the desired regulator. Convergence results of the adaptation algorithm are presented. A simulation example involving a retinal imaging adaptive optics system is used to illustrate the performance of the proposed adaptive system. Copyright (C) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Reliable decentralized PID controller synthesis for two-channel MIMO processes

Reliable stabilization and regulation of two-channel decentralized multi-input multi-output (MIMO) control systems is considered. The system has integral-action due to using proportional + integral + derivative (PID) controllers. Closed-loop stability and asymptotic tracking of step-input references are achieved at each output channel when all controllers are operational. Stability is maintained when one of the controllers fails completely and is set to zero. Controller synthesis procedures are proposed for stable MIMO plants and for several unstable MIMO plant classes that admit PID controllers. These synthesis procedures are applied to various examples of process systems to illustrate the design methodology. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

PID controller synthesis for a class of unstable MIMO plants with I/O delays

Conditions are presented for closed-loop stabilizability of linear time-invariant (LTI) multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) plants with I/O delays (time delays in the input and/or output channels) using PID (Proportional + Integral + Derivative) controllers. We show that systems with at most two unstable poles can be stabilized by PID controllers provided a small gain condition is satisfied. For systems with only one unstable pole, this condition is equivalent to having sufficiently small delay-unstable pole product. Our method of synthesis of such controllers identify some free parameters that can be used to satisfy further design criteria than stability. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Many tuning strategies for model predictive control algorithms have been proposed in the literature depending on the conditionality of the system matrix and the choice of its cost function. In this paper, the properties of a new predictive controller termed extended predictive control (EPC) are investigated and presented. These properties are important to the understanding of the unique tuning strategy of EPC. EPC is based on the assumption of infinite horizon which is preferable to guarantee stability. The EPC properties are derived using a second order plant with relatively large dead time and is applicable to any open-loop stable system. The tuning strategy of EPC was applied to generalized predictive control with good results. (c) 2006, ISA. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper explores the application of the particle swarm algorithm for a NP-hard problem in the area of wireless communications. The specific problem is of detecting symbols in a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communications system. This approach is particularly attractive as PSO is well Suited for physically realizable, real-time applications, where low complexity and fast convergence is of absolute importance. While all optimal Maximum Likelihood (ML) detection using an exhaustive search method is prohibitively complex, we show that the Swarm Intelligence (SI) optimized MIMO detection algorithm gives near-optimal Bit Error Rate (BER) performance in fewer iterations, thereby reducing the ML computational complexity significantly. The simulation results suggest that the proposed detector gives an acceptable performance complexity trade-off in comparison with ML and VBLAST detectors.

In this paper, a design method of nonlinear autopilot for ship-to-ship missiles is proposed. Ship-to-ship missiles have strongly coupled dynamics through roll, yaw, and pitch channel in comparison with general STT type missiles. Thus it becomes difficult to employ previous control design method directly since We Should find three different Solutions for each control fill deflection and should verify the stability for more complicated dynamics. In this study, we first propose a control loop structure for roll, yaw, and pitch autopilot which call determine the required angles of all three control fins. For yaw and pitch autopilot design, missile model is reduced to a minimum phase model by applying a singular perturbation like technique to the yaw and pitch dynamics. Based on this model, a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) nonlinear autopilot is designed. And the stability is analyzed considering roll influences on dynamic couplings of yaw and pitch channel as well as the aerodynamic couplings. Some additional issues oil the autopilot implementation for these coupled missile dynamics are discussed. Lastly, 6-DOF (degree of freedom) numerical simulation results are presented to verify the proposed method.

Channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter can be used to adapt transmission rate or antenna gains in multi-antenna systems. We propose a rate-adaptive M-QAM scheme equipped with orthogonal space-time block coding with simple outdated, finite-rate feedback over independent flat fading channels. We obtain closed-form expressions for the average BER and throughput for our scheme, and analyze the effects of possibly delayed feedback on the performance gains. We derive optimal switching thresholds maximizing the average throughput under average and outage BER constraints with outdated feedback. Our numerical results illustrate the immunity of our optimal thresholds to delayed feedback.

This paper examines receiving antenna selection (RAS) and receiving antenna combination (RAC) techniques from the viewpoint of receiver structure with the aim of improving bit error rate (BER) performances for receivers in MIMO (multi-input multi-output) systems. We assume two receiver structures. One is a structure for controlling gain in received signals centrally for all receiving antennas (CC receiver). The other is a structure for controlling gain in received signals individually in each receiving antenna (CI receiver). We show that a C receiver can obtain good BER performances when utilizing RAS/RAC techniques using the channel matrix eigenvalue (RAS/RAC-E). Additionally, we consider RAS/RAC techniques using the phase of the channel component (RAS/RAC-PC) and received power (RAS/RAC-RP) in a CI receiver. We then simulate BER performances when employing the proposed RAS-PC and RAS-RP techniques under Rayleigh fading channels. The results clearly show that the RAS/RAC-PC techniques are able to obtain good BER performances for a CI receiver.

A two-dimensional (2-D) system realization via output measurements is developed. The technique is based on multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems where two sets of matrices (A,B,C) that characterize the system dynamics of a target in a 2-D space are obtained from the row and column directions of the output measurements. A modal decomposition approach is used to couple the two sets of matrices and obtain the states pairing without effort. Effectiveness of the technique is confirmed, and results are presented for static-range radar measurements taken on a canonical target.

This paper describes a family of minimally parameterized state-space models for completely n-step observable multi-input multi-output time-varying systems and their algebraical links with equivalent input-output models. These results are then used to develop an algorithm for the realization of generic input-output sequences generated by a periodic system.
