Evaluation of nitrate sources and the percent contribution of bacterial denitrification in hyporheic zone using isotope fractionation technique and multi-linear regression analysis

Denitrification has documented as a promising pathway to permanently remove nitrate from a system. Numerous studies have used the isotope fractionation technique (IFT) to evaluate the denitrification rate in the constructed wetlands (CWs), but the potential of IFT method to quantify the denitrification rate in hyporheic zone (saturated sediments beneath a stream) is still challenging. Thus, more studies are required to investigate that if measurements of the natural abundance of delta N-15-NO3- and delta O-18-NO3- (IFT) can be employed to calculate the fate of nitrate in hyporheic zone. Therefore, in this study, the possibility of the IFT to quantify the hyporheic-denitrification rate was investigated. Then, the results were verified by the combined application of the preestablished net Sediment N-2 flux and multi-linear regression analysis (p < 0.01). Finally, the groundwater bacterial groups (Fecal conform (FC) and Escherichia coil (EC)), and the mass balance isotope mixing model were used to investigate the dominant sources of hyporheic-nitrate. The IFT reveals that denitrification contributes 74.1% and 29.1% of the hyporheic-nitrate removal during dry and wet seasons, respectively. The multi-linear regression analysis, considering at 99% confidence interval (R-2 = 92.1%;n = 44;p < 0.01), slightly overestimates the rate and the percent contribution of denitrification in the dry season (475.15 +/- 101.18 mu mol/m2d;80.7%) and underestimates it during the wet season (205.072 +/- 35.39 mu mol/m2d;24.01%). The analysis of EC and FC demonstrates that manure (41.9 +/- 4.2%) and sewage (54.1 +/- 8.9%) are the dominant contributors of the hyporheic-nitrate load. In addition, the results achieved by the analysis of the fecal bacterial indicators (EC and FC) were confirmed by NO3-/Cl- vs Cl- diagram. Polynomial neural network-based group method of data handling algorithm coupled with modified particle swarm optimization to predict permeate flux (%) of rectangular sheet-shaped membrane

The paper discussed a novel approach of polynomial neural network-based group method of data handling coupled with modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to predict the permeate flux of rectangular sheet-shaped membrane. In this regard, permeate flux is considered to be a model output, whereas operating pressure, pore size, and feed velocity were considered as model input. It was reported that the polynomial neural network (PNN)-based group method of data handling (GMDH) model has a performance index (PI) value of 0.723 which is higher than in other methods like artificial neural network (ANN), multi-linear regression analysis (MLR), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). In this study, three typical mathematical test functions were used to evaluate performance of modified PSO. The findings showed that the modified PSO algorithm exhibits better global search ability, computational speed, and stability. Process optimization resulted in optimum operating conditions for operating pressure, pore size, and feed velocity (were 543.69 Pa, 1.40 mu m, and 0.179 m/s), respectively. Sensitivity analysis established pore size to be the most significant parameter.

Religiosity and Subjective Well-Being of the Central and Eastern European's Elderly Population

The paper examines the relation between religiosity and cognitive appraisal of the subjective well-being of the Central and Eastern European's elderly population. The first part of the paper is dedicated to examining of the scientific literature. In the second part, the authors explore the data basis corresponding to the 6th wave of World Value Survey. The authors use the heterogeneous correlation and the multi-linear regression analysis in order to explain the relation between religiosity and subjective well-being of the old aged. Our results suggest that in the case of the Central Eastern European elderly satisfaction with life is mostly influenced by health and income. It is likely that for Central and Eastern European's elders religious practices do not sufficiently influence their life satisfaction.

Highly fluorescent blue-green emitting phenanthroimidazole derivatives: Detail experimental and DFT study of structural and donating group effects on fluorescence properties

A series of highly fluorescent blue-green emitting phenanthrene and 3,6-diphenylphenanthrene based compounds have been synthesized to study the effect of different electron donating groups on photophysical properties. A very unique and different fluorescence properties are observed in the case of N-phenyl carbazole donor based compounds as compared to the other electron donating groups. Observed intramolecular charge transfer and highly polar excited states of these compounds are elucidated by Lipert-Mataga correlations. The positive and negative solvatochromism observed from non-polar to polar solvents is also supported using Kamlet-Taft and Catalan multilinear regression analysis. Comparative study of photophysical properties between benzil, phenanthrene and 3,6-diphenylphenanthrene based hydroxyl imidazole derivatives is presented to study the effect of rigidity and extended conjugation. Observed experimental results are also correlated theoretically using Density Functional theory computations.

A novel strategy for the synthesis of triphenylamine based and methoxy supported deep red emitting push-pull chromophores is developed. The methoxy groups though not in conjugation with the acceptor exhibited a red shifted absorption and emissions (670 nm) as compared to the unsubstituted analogues due to the improved donating ability of triphenylamine. The dyes show high molar extinction coefficients (1, 65,800 M-1 cm(-1)) and as the number of withdrawing groups increases the molar extinction coefficient and emission intensity increase. Positive solvatochromism (96 nm) was observed which is well supported by linear and multi-linear regression. The mono styryl dyes showed enhancement of fluorescence while the di and tri-styryl dyes show quenching of fluorescence in polar solvents, which is correlated with the intramolecular charge transfer and twisted intramolecular charge transfer. Viscosity induced emission enhancement has also been observed. The experimental. findings were correlated theoretically by using Density Functional theory computations. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Donor-pi-acceptor-pi-auxiliary acceptor type compounds have been designed and synthesized to study their rigidity and structural effects on optical properties. Structural variation is achieved by changing the central pi-conjugated core with naphthalene, acenaphthene and phenanthrene based donor-pi-acceptor compounds containing N, N-diethyl aniline or morpholine as donor and pyrazine ring fused with phenanthroline as acceptor. A detailed study of positive and negative acidochromism is performed. Intramolecular charge transfer, solvatochromism and highly polar excited state of these compounds are elucidated by Lippert-Mataga, Mac-Rae and Reichardt correlations. multilinear regression analysis using Kamlet-Taft and Catalan parameters is also performed to support the observed solvatochromism in absorption and emission spectra from non-polar to polar solvents. Development of a model for quality evaluation of litchi fruit

Sensory quality of litchi fruit is closely related to the appearance, flavor and nutritional quality. Principle component analysis (PCA) and multi-linear regression analysis (MLR) were performed to select the crucial quality factors in determining litchi sensory quality, and then a mathematical model was established to evaluate the litchi quality. Sensory evaluation value was conducted by a trained panel while sixteen instrumental quality parameters were used, including color (L*, a* and b*), single fruit weight (SFW), total soluble solids (TSS), pH, crude protein (CP), vitamin C (Vc), titratable acid (TA), glucose, fructose, sucrose, malic acid (MA), tartaric, edible rate (ER), and juice yield ay). The PCA result demonstrated that six principle components exhibited high relationship with sweet and sour degrees, color, ER, TSS, Vc, CA and JY, which accounted for 82.359% of the original variables, and MLR results indicated that the crucial quality parameters were SFW, TA, a*, and ER. The predicted model was established in which validity Q(LOO)(2) = 0.603 > 0.5 in leave-one-out cross validation. Cluster analysis was used to select the cultivars suitable for eating quality which can provided a guide for litchi production and breeding. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Incorporating the data of different watersheds to estimate the effects of land use change on flood peak and volume using multi-linear regression

Affected by human activities, land use and land cover has changed in Daqinghe watershed, China, which resulted in varied runoff. In many hydrological stations, there was a decreasing trend of flood volume and flood peak, but no trend of rainfall depth. In order to quantify the effect of land use change on flood peak and volume, we selected 5 sub-watersheds in Daqinghe watershed, and made a multi-linear regression analysis incorporating the main information in the selected sub-watersheds. The dependent variables are changes in flood volume and flood peak, and the independent variables are the control factors including changes in rainfall depth, intensity, land use area, watershed area, and so on. The rainfall and flood data series are from 1956 to 2005. We divided the data into 2 groups according to flood sizeaEuro center dot greater than and less than 10 year return period. At last, 4 regression equations were obtained. Based on the multi-linear regression equations and land use data of 1970, 1980, 1995 and 2000, the quantified effects of land use change on flood peak and volume were obtained. Compared with 2000 land use condition, flood volume and peak varied larger in 1970 and 1995 land use conditions, but slightly in 1980 land use condition. Take Zijingguan as an example, flood volume greater than 10 year return period increased 4.08 mm in 1970 land use and decreased 4.90 mm in 1995 land use, but just increased 0.12 mm in 1980 land use. Among all the selected sub-watersheds, land use change had a significant effect on both flood volume and peak in Zijingguan and Zhangfang sub-watersheds. And Manshuihe showed a large variation in 1970 land use condition, other sub-watersheds exhibit a moderate variation due to land use change.

A new approach for identifying the rate controlling step applied to the leaching of nickel from spent catalyst

The kinetics of nickel leaching from spent NiO/Al2O3 catalyst was investigated using sulfuric acid as leaching reagent Leaching experiments were carried out for two different particle sizes of coarse (-8 + 18 mesh) and fine (-400 mesh). Based on the leaching results, a two stage leaching process was observed for the fine particles, one at low Ni recovery (less than 40%) and the other at high recoveries (greater than 80%) while the leaching of coarse particles takes place in a single stage. Kinetic study was performed by fitting the three rate equations proposed in the shrinking core model (SCM) to the leaching data. A new approach was suggested to determine the rate controlling mechanism by applying a constrained multi-linear regression analysis using the least square technique. This technique takes into account all three possible rate controlling mechanisms for leaching processes (i.e., chemical reaction, diffusion through product layer and liquid film mass transfer) simultaneously and determines the controlling step(s) on its own. Results of kinetic study by this method showed that the rate of the first stage of fine particle leaching is controlled by diffusion through the liquid film and the second stage is controlled by chemical reaction on the unreacted core surface. Efficiency factor of high calcium Class F fly ash in concrete

This paper studied the cement efficiency factor (k factor) of high calcium Class F fly ash. This k factor represents a unit of fly ash with efficiency equivalent to k unit of cement. The high calcium Class F fly ash was used to replace cement in concrete. The modified Bolomey's law with linear relationship was used for the analysis of the result of compressive strength, cement to water ratio (c/w) and fly ash to water ratio (f/w) by using the multi-linear regression to determine the k factor and other constants in the equations. The results of analysis were compared with the results from other researcher and showed that the k factor of high calcium Class F fly ash depends on the fineness of fly ash, replacement level and curing age. While the amount of CaO content in Class F fly ash not evident. Furthermore, necessary criteria and variables for the determination of the k factor including the use of the k factor in concrete mix design containing fly ash were proposed.
