multi-loop integral control is still one of the most popular control strategies in industry due to its simplicity, efficiency, offset free tracking, and capability for fault tolerance. Skogestad and Morari introduced Decentralized Integral controllability (DIC) to investigate the decentralized unconditional stability under multi-loop integral control for square systems. However, in engineering practice, some multivariable processes may not be square, which often utilize multiple redundant control inputs for the regulation of only one single output. This study extends the concept of Decentralized Integral controllability to non-square systems, and presents sufficient conditions for multiple-Input Single-Output nonlinear processes based on singular perturbation analysis. The proposed controllability analysis method is applied in the control of a real time temperature control system and achieves desired temperature tracking results.

In this paper, a generalized closed-loop control (GCC) scheme is proposed for voltage source converters (VSCs) with LC or LCL output filters. The proposed GCC scheme has a single-loop control of inverter output (voltage or current) and two parallel virtual impedance terms using additional measurements. The virtual impedance can be the equivalent internal impedance or external impedance (or both) depending on their control term and feedback variable selection. The internal impedance term is mainly responsible for providing desired damping to the filter circuit, and the external virtual impedance term can effectively adjust the converter system closed-loop output impedance. As the GCC scheme provides distinct physical meaning of each control term, it can make the parameter tuning more straightforward and robust. Additionally, the proposed GCC scheme can tackle some challenging control objectives by avoiding the harmonics filtering or derivative terms. Experimental results validate the proposed GCC scheme.

The ever increasing demand for reducing fuel consumption and emission has driven the improvement and innovation of new technology in an engine and an engine dynamometer system for an engine testing equipment. This paper presents a novel control method of the engine eddy dynamometer system for the automobile engine tester, an engine eddy dynamometer measurement and control system is developed based on Embedded PC and NI(National Instrument)real-time module by Labview software. Aiming at a multipleinput-multiple-output engine-dynamometer complex system, a multi-loop optimized subdivision PID controller of engine eddy dynamometer is designed. The experimental results indicated that the controller owns excellent performance and adaptability.

A review about reverse osmosis (RO) desalination leads to the conclusion that the field of control system design of RO plants is still an open research subject. The standard approach considers two control loops with PI controllers. This is an economical viable solution for the control problem. However, the resulting control performance is normally suboptimal because controllers are individually tuned assuming inaccurately that the system is decoupled. In order to overcome this problem, some advanced control algorithms have been proposed in the specialized literature. However, such approaches are complicated and expensive. Therefore manufacturers of RO plants are not enthusiastic with their implementation particularly in the case of small plants. In the present work, an approach for the optimal achievement of controllers' parameters based in game theory and multi-objective optimization is applied to tune the PI controllers of a simple RO plant. The methodology allows a simultaneous tuning of several controllers distributed in different coupled control loops. Moreover, some control systems topologies are compared and an optimal solution for the control problem is proposed. Thus, the main objective here is to obtain the best possible performance for the control system without having to change control algorithms and equipment. Simulation results show the advantage of using the proposed approach and make apparent the control system topology, which yields the best tracking performance.

Fast and precise positioning of electrostatically actuated dual-axis micromiffor by multi-loop digital control

Fast and precise positioning is of great importance for electrostatically actuated dual-axis micromirror. However, this device suffers from long settling time and large cross-axis coupling. This paper reports a multi-loop digital control method to improve the positioning performance. The system is identified and a multi-loop proportional, integral and derivative (PID) controller is designed. Both the simulation and experimental results show a significant improvement for the positioning speed and precision. The settling time is shortened from 15 to 5 ms and 24 to 3 ms for x-axis and y-axis rotation, respectively. The cross-axis coupling is suppressed to a negligible level. Less than 5% maximum positioning error is obtained. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Robust optimization-based multi-loop PID controller tuning: A new tool and an industrial example

Abstract Modern process plants are highly integrated and as a result, decentralized PID control loops are often strongly interactive. The currently used sequential tuning approach is not only time consuming, but does also not achieve optimal performance of the inherently multivariable control system. This paper describes a method and a software tool which allows a control engineer to calculate optimal PID controller settings for multiloop systems. It is based on the identification of a state space model of the multivariable system, and it uses constrained nonlinear optimization techniques to find the controller parameters. The solution is tailored to the specific control system and PID algorithm to be used. The methodology has been successfully applied in several industrial advanced control projects. The tuning results which have been achieved for interacting PID control loops in the stabilizing section of an industrial Gasoline Treatment Unit at SABIC Petrochemicals are presented.

A simple optimal balance control scheme for electrolysation plants is proposed. It can be realized through the use of a commercially available model predictive control (MPC) package. In most cases, much property data or information regarding disturbances, such as the deterioration of electrodes and ion exchange membranes, is necessary in order to calculate the optimal operating conditions for energy conservation. However, the proposed controller can achieve the optimal conditions without them. In this paper, it is proved that the resultant converged operating conditions of the proposed controller are identical to the actual optimal condition. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Hovering performance of unmanned helicopter is of key importance in flight. This paper presents an autonomous control system to achieve the excellent hovering performance for a miniature unmanned helicopter. First, the response data of system is collected during special flight test and a linear time-invariant model is extracted by frequency identification technique. Then, the control system is designed and implemented on hover control of the helicopter using multi-loop control method. The method has simple structure, straightforward design process and low com-puting load imposed on the flight control system. The proposed multi-loop controller is composed of inner-loop attitude control, mid-loop velocity control and the outer-loop position control. The application results show that the proposed controller can obtain outstanding hovering performance. This control system structure is very feasible in engineering, and can be benefit for control system design of other miniature unmanned helicopters.

This paper addresses the problem of suppressing torsional vibration induced by a disturbance torque in a high performance two-disk system. The plant consists of two inertia disks connected by a weakly damped link and is driven by a brushless DC motor connected to one of the disks. A distributed parameter model of the system is developed and a lumped parameter model including the dominant torsional modes is then extracted. A multi-loop controller is designed on the basis of the lumped parameter model and is shown to be capable of suppressing the vibration to a reasonable level and over a wide frequency range.

A drillstring mechanism used for oil or gas drilling behaves as a torsional pendulum. The lowest part of the drillstring exhibits self-excited vibrations induced by nonlinear friction at the rock-crushing tool. Since these vibrations can lead to premature degradation of highly expensive mechanical and electronic components, a control strategy is necessary to attenuate or even eliminate their adverse effects. A multi-loop control design is proposed, which is composed by an inner and an outer loop. The aim of the inner-loop is to add enough damping to suppress stick-slip vibrations, while the objective of the outer-loop is to achieve the desired drillstring velocity.
