Power capacity enhancement of hydropower plant through the penetration of solar and wind energy

Integrating renewable energy sources is crucial for enhancing the power capacity and reliability of existing hydropower plants. This study explores the potential of augmenting hydropower capacity by incorporating solar and wind energy. By leveraging the complementary nature of these renewable sources, the study aims to optimize energy production and reduce dependence on hydro resources during low water availability. A comprehensive analysis, including simulation models and field data, demonstrates the effective harnessing and synchronization of solar and wind energy with hydropower generation. A multi-objective genetic algorithm was employed to optimize this integration, addressing objectives such as maximizing power output, improving energy efficiency, and minimizing environmental impact. This algorithm facilitated the identification of effective strategies for enhancing the performance and capacity of the hybrid renewable energy system. Three key objectives were achieved: reducing the Loss of Power Supply Probability (LPSP) to 0.75 %, calculating the net present cost (NPC) at $4.37 million, and determining the cost of energy (COE) at $0.086 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). These results demonstrate the economic viability and reliability of the integrated system. The power generation capacity of the plant was enhanced by 25 % with integration of PV, and wind energy system. The findings reveal significant improvements in power capacity and grid stability, highlighting the feasibility and benefits of a hybrid renewable energy system. This approach enhances energy security, reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 248,922.4 tons per year, and promotes clean energy use. The study offers valuable insights and guidelines for policymakers and energy planners seeking to implement similar strategies.

This study introduces a simulation-based optimization approach that combines a multi-objective genetic algorithm and the finite element method to design sandwich structures to reinforce composite fuselages. The sandwich structure has been parametrized with a set of mixed integer-continuous variables representing the polymer core thickness, the number and weight of laminated fiberglass layers, and size and position of the structure. Automatic scripting builds the geometry of the structure, then mounts it in the fuselage, and finally creates a conformal mesh. During the optimization, each reinforced fuselage is subjected to several load cases specified by the CS-22 EASA design standard, determining the worst load condition. Two objectives were considered: increasing the reinforced fuselage's minimum fiber stress safety factor for improved safety and reducing the number of layers of the sandwich structure to minimize manufacturing costs. Structural constraints were the mass of the sandwich structure and buckling and flexo-torsional deformation of the reinforced fuselage. Results show an efficient material arrangement due to the reduced number of layers in the sandwich structure and a stress safety factor surpassing that set by the standard. Finally, the reinforcement of a glider fuselage to incorporate a retractable electric propulsion system is presented as a real-world industrial application.

A Calculation Method for the Journal Bearing with a Determined Load Based on Response Surface Optimization

Calculation with the determined load is more useful for engineering applications because the external load is easier to obtain than the bearing eccentricity. However, the calculation method based on the determined load for a journal bearing with a complex structure is still difficult to meet requirement. This article presents a calculation method to seek proper bearing eccentricity with a determined external load according to response surface methodology. The relationship between the relative eccentricity and attitude angle of the journal bearing and the external load is determined according to response surface optimization. The Navier-Stokes and elastic deformation equations are adopted during calculation of lubricating properties. The validity of the calculation method is verified with the experimental results. Moreover, the method is proved to be applicable to calculation of the fixed load based on the Reynolds equation.

GA-optimized fuzzy logic control of a large-scale building for seismic loads

Validation of fuzzy logic controllers that are optimized by a genetic algorithm is pursued in this study. Fuzzy logic controllers are designed to manage two 20 kN magnetorheological dampers for mitigation of seismic loads applied to a 9 m tall, three-story steel frame benchmark building. In order to develop a set of robust controllers that are sensitive to a variety of excitations, a genetic algorithm that considers multiple objectives concurrently is proposed. Four optimization objectives have been selected which necessitates employment of a controlled elitist genetic algorithm. Optimal controllers are identified and validated through numerical simulation and full-scale experimental shake table tests for a variety of seismic excitations. Furthermore, a modified version of the same genetic algorithm is used to identify a state-space representation of the benchmark structure. Results show that optimized fuzzy logic controllers are robust and effective in reduction of both displacement and acceleration responses for both near- and far-field seismic events. Solving a multi-objective no-wait flow shop scheduling problem with an immune algorithm

Flow shop scheduling problems have gained wide attention both in practical and academic fields. In this paper, we consider a multi-objective no-wait flow shop scheduling problem by minimizing the weighted mean completion time and weighted mean tardiness simultaneously. Since a flow shop scheduling problem has been proved to be NP-hard in a strong sense, an effective immune algorithm (IA) is proposed for searching locally the Pareto-optimal frontier for the given problem. To validate the performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of solution quality and diversity level, various test problems are carried out and the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, based on some comparison metrics, is compared with a prominent multi-objective genetic algorithm, i.e., strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm II (SPEA-II). The computational results show that the proposed IA outperforms the above genetic algorithm, especially for large problems.

MOGA-Based Structural Design Method for Diagrid Structural Control System Subjected to Wind and Earthquake Loads

An integrated optimal structural design method for a diagrid structure and control device was developed. A multi-objective genetic algorithm was used and a 60-story diagrid building structure was developed as an example structure. Artificial wind and earthquake loads were generated to assess the wind-induced and seismic responses. A smart tuned mass damper (TMD) was used as a structural control system and an MR (magnetorheological) damper was employed to develop a smart TMD (STMD). The multi-objective genetic algorithm used five objectives including a reduction of the dynamic responses, additional stiffness and damping, mass of STMD, capacity of the MR damper for the integrated optimization of a diagrid structure and a STMD. From the proposed method, integrated optimal designs for the diagrid structure and STMD were obtained. The numerical simulation also showed that the STMD provided good control performance for reducing the wind-induced and seismic responses of a tall diagrid building structure.

Introducing more choices (flexibility) in the upgrading of water distribution networks: the New York city tunnel network example

The New York city tunnel network problem is a classical case study for water distribution network rehabilitation or upgrading. However, standard problem formulations only offer single solutions based on fixed pressure head and demand requirements. This problem is re-examined through the use of multiple criteria optimization and a framework for interpreting these results is proposed. Results from previous studies were closely examined to highlight areas that can be improved. A 6-objective optimization problem was then formulated and results were compared with optimization using a single-objective genetic algorithm (GA) and 2-objectives optimization using a non-dominated sorted genetic algorithm-II. Although the initial runtime for the 6-objective optimization was long compared with single-objective GA, it provided solutions which span the whole spectrum of possibilities ( in terms of pressure head requirements and cost). It is concluded that the proposed 6-objectives formulation can indeed offer more design choices, hence flexibility, for designers and decision makers.

Application of entransy-dissipation-based thermal resistance for performance optimization of spiral-wound heat exchanger

The effects of geometrical parameters on thermal resistance based on entransy dissipation caused by heat transfer (R-ht) and fluid friction (R-ff) of spiral-wound heat exchanger (SWHE) were studied by numerical method. The simulation results show that all geometrical parameters (spiral angle, external diameter, layer pitch, tube pitch) are negatively correlated with R-ff because of flow pattern transition caused by the variation of geometrical parameters and the changing of effective flow area which would cause the decrease of entransy dissipation related to fluid friction. For the entransy dissipation due to the heat transfer, the increase of layer pitch are positive to it while both the tube pitch and external tube diameter are negative to R-ht, and with the increase of the spiral angle, the R-ht decrease at first and then increase. What is more, the MOGA optimization of SWHE was carried out based on different types of objective functions. Compared with the traditional objective functions (minimize Delta P and maximize K), R-ff and R-ht obtained from minimizing the entransy-dissipation-based thermal resistance reduce by an average of 90.51% and 34.13%, respectively. Compared with original structure, the comprehensive performance evaluation factor (Nu/f/(1/3)) of traditional optimal results is improved by an average of 41.02%, while that of optimal structures obtained from entransy theory is strengthened by an average of 76.64%. The results demonstrate that the objective functions of minimizing the entransy-dissipation-based thermal resistance are better than that of traditional objective functions for optimization of spiral wound heat exchanger. Design of hybrid power generation systems based on multi criteria decision analysis

The optimal design of Hybrid Photo Voltaic-Wind Turbine (PV-WT) grid connected power generation systems (PGSs) is not an easy or straightforward task, as the best configuration depends on many different uncertain socio-economic and environment variables, design parameters, technical constraints and government and policy maker interests. In this context, this work deals with the optimal design of grid connected PV-WT PGSs, achieved by using a suitable procedure based on a multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) optimization approach. The method takes into consideration all the aforementioned issues, working toward optimizing amount of reduced emissions, total costs, and social acceptability, and providing a clear overview of the most suitable PV-WT design configurations. The proposed approach has been applied to different case studies and uncertainty analysis related to solar radiation, wind speed and load demand profiles variations has been carried out using a probabilistic approach;in addition, different criteria weights have been adopted for sensitivity analysis, where the importance of each design parameter has been assumed to be uncertain, and its effect on the final optimal design is investigated. Results confirm the effectiveness and flexibility of the proposed approach, which could be assumed as a powerful decision making tool in designing hybrid renewable energy grid connected PGSs.
