multi-objective optimisation of software application mappings on heterogeneous MPSoCs: TONPET versus R2-EMOA

For heterogeneous multi-core architectures, efficient development of parallel software is paramount. Fast and accurate compiler technology is required in order to exploit their advantages and to optimise for multiple objectives, such as performance and power. The work at hand presents a heuristic and state-of-the-art Evolutionary multi objective Algorithm (EMOA) approach to tackle this problem. The performance and consistency of the population based heuristic TONPET and the indicator based EMOA are compared and thoroughly analysed. For the evaluation, both are integrated into the SLX tool suite. Representative benchmarks and three different MPSoC platforms are chosen for an in-depth realistic analysis. For smaller and medium sized solution spaces, TONPET outperforms the EMOA with 4.7% better Pareto fronts on average, while being 18 x faster in the worst case. In vast solution spaces, the EMOA consistently produces 3% better Pareto fronts on average but TONPET runs 88 x faster in the worst case. Furthermore, for comparison purposes, a full performance consistency analysis on EMOA conducted.

multi-objective optimisation in flexible assembly job shop scheduling using a distributed ant colony system

This paper studies the production scheduling problem in a flexible manufacturing system with two adjacent working areas, whose products are incorporated with flexible non-linear process plans and assembling operations. The basic parts are produced in one area before they are transported to the other area for assembly. The assembling structures of products are either flat or multi-levelled. Sequence-dependent setup times of operations and transition times of jobs between machines are considered separately from processing times. Lot streaming is considered beforehand such that each job represents a basic part instead of a batch of identical parts. Identical subassemblies are shared by all possible assembling operations, instead of being pre-associated with any product. Makespan, total tardiness and total workload are taken as objectives to be optimised. We propose a distributed ant colony system to solve the problem and explore the Pareto front. The approach is first compared with other methods, using several sets of hypothetical test cases with different sizes and complexities;then, it is applied to solve a ball valve production scheduling problem under different scenarios. We show that the proposed approach outperforms most of the other methods for the tested problems, especially for large-scale instances, making it a valuable and competitive approach for solving practical production scheduling problems. multi-objective optimisation framework for calibration of Cellular Automata land-use models

Modelling of land-use change plays an important role in many areas of environmental planning. However, land-use change models remain challenging to calibrate, as they contain many sensitive parameters, making the calibration process time-consuming. We present a multi-objective optimisation framework for automatic calibration of Cellular Automata land-use models with multiple dynamic land-use classes. The framework considers objectives related to locational agreement and landscape pattern structure, as well as the inherent stochasticity of land-use models. The framework was tested on the Randstad region in the Netherlands, identifying 77 model parameter sets that generated a Pareto front of optimal trade-off solutions between the objectives. A selection of these parameter sets was assessed further based on heuristic knowledge, evaluating the simulated output maps and parameter values to determine a final calibrated model. This research demonstrates that heuristic knowledge complements the evaluation of land-use models calibrated using formal optimisation methods. (c) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

multi-objective optimisation of aircraft flight trajectories in the ATM and avionics context

The continuous increase of air transport demand worldwide and the push for a more economically viable and environmentally sustainable aviation are driving significant evolutions of aircraft, airspace and airport systems design and operations. Although extensive research has been performed on the optimisation of aircraft trajectories and very efficient algorithms were widely adopted for the optimisation of vertical flight profiles, it is only in the last few years that higher levels of automation were proposed for integrated flight planning and re-routing functionalities of innovative Communication Navigation and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) and Avionics (CNS+A) systems. In this context, the implementation of additional environmental targets and of multiple operational constraints introduces the need to efficiently deal with multiple objectives as part of the trajectory optimisation algorithm. This article provides a comprehensive review of multi-objective Trajectory optimisation (MOTO) techniques for transport aircraft flight operations, with a special focus on the recent advances introduced in the CNS+A research context. In the first section, a brief introduction is given, together with an overview of the main international research initiatives where this topic has been studied, and the problem statement is provided. The second section introduces the mathematical formulation and the third section reviews the numerical solution techniques, including discretisation and optimisation methods for the specific problem formulated. The fourth section summarises the strategies to articulate the preferences and to select optimal trajectories when multiple conflicting objectives are introduced. The fifth section introduces a number of models defining the optimality criteria and constraints typically adopted in MOTO studies, including fuel consumption, air pollutant and noise emissions, operational costs, condensation trails, airspace and airport operations. The aim of the present paper was to move water through a reservoir network in such a way as to meet consumer demands and level constraints, minimise the cost of electricity, and minimise the loss of chlorine. This was to be achieved by choosing the switching intervals of reservoir inlet pumps and valves, at the same time complying with the allowed minimum interval size of each device. Switching combinations that threatened to exceed constraints were rejected heuristically. Flows were balanced by linear programming (LP). The genetic algorithm gave confidence in the near-optimality of its solutions, through the well-defined Pareto fronts between the competing objectives. The method was applied to a 16-reservoir water distribution system in Durban, South Africa. Comparison with an equivalent 'dead-band' control showed a 30% improvement in a weighted objective.

Error mapping of machine tools is a multi-measurement task that is planned based on expert knowledge. There are no intelligent tools aiding the production of optimal measurement plans. In previous work, a method of intelligently constructing measurement plans demonstrated that it is feasible to optimise the plans either to reduce machine tool downtime or the estimated uncertainty of measurement due to the plan schedule. However, production scheduling and a continuously changing environment can impose conflicting constraints on downtime and the uncertainty of measurement. In this paper, the use of the produced measurement model to minimise machine tool downtime, the uncertainty of measurement and the arithmetic mean of both is investigated and discussed through the use of twelve different error mapping instances. The multi-objective search plans on average have a 3% reduction in the time metric when compared to the downtime of the uncertainty optimised plan and a 23% improvement in estimated uncertainty of measurement metric when compared to the uncertainty of the temporally optimised plan. Further experiments on a High Performance Computing (HPC) architecture demonstrated that there is on average a 3% improvement in optimality when compared with the experiments performed on the PC architecture. This demonstrates that even though a 4% improvement is beneficial, in most applications a standard PC architecture will result in valid error mapping plan. (C) 2014 The Authors. multi-objective optimisation of damper placement in dynamically similar adjacent buildings is considered with identical viscoelastic dampers used for vibration control. An exhaustive search is used to describe the solution space in terms of various quantities of interest such as maximum top floor displacement, maximum floor acceleration, base shear and inter-storey drift. With the help of examples, it is pointed out that the Pareto fronts in these problems contain a very small number of solutions. The effectiveness of two commonly used multi-objective evolutionary algorithms, viz. NSGA-II and MOPSO, is evaluated for a specific example.

Nowadays, improving the accuracy of vehicle collision simulation is of great significance to the design and manufacture safety automobiles. Many parts in automobile manufacture are obtained by stamping process. The thickness, plastic deformation and residual stress will change after stamping process which will affect the simulation precision of vehicle collision. However, traditional collision simulation does not consider the influence of these factors. In this paper, a collision simulation method of the front longitudinal beam was studied which maps the stamping results to a collision structure model. The effects of stamping on the crashworthiness of front longitudinal beam (FLB) were analyzed to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of the automobile crash finite element simulation. To further study the effects of the manufacturing parameters (e.g. the thickness of the sheet metal, friction coefficient and two draw-bead coefficients on the energy absorption and peak crushing force), a multi-objective optimisation was carried out with non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) through combining the stamping and collision process. The optimal results of the FLB show that the proposed method significantly improved the formability and crashworthiness.

multi-objective optimisation of Power-to-Mobility in Decentralised multi-Energy Systems

The energy strategies used to plan future emissions reductions typically have separate strategies for decarbonisation of the transport and building sectors. However, the advent and diffusion of alternative fuel vehicle technologies could result in vehicle transport becoming a major energy load in urban energy systems in addition to heating and electricity. The building and personal transport sectors both have a large potential for CO2 emissions reductions, however the energy must come from mainly renewable sources. In this work, a multi-objective optimisation model is developed that considers a multi-energy system and minimises both the total cost and life-cycle emissions of both the buildings and vehicles. The model selects both the conversion and storage technologies that the community uses to produce electricity and heat, as well as vehicle powertrain types. The resulting Pareto solutions rely on transitions away from internal combustion engine vehicles to battery electric vehicles, and to a much lesser extent plug-in hybrid vehicles. The heating energy is decarbonised with a transition to heat pumps and away from gas boilers. The optimisation model is tested with 77 vehicles and 50 buildings, and results shows that the emission reductions could be as high as 79% by 2035 and 85% by 2050. multi-objective optimisation for battery electric vehicle powertrain topologies

Electric vehicles are becoming more popular in the market. To be competitive, manufacturers need to produce vehicles with a low energy consumption, a good range and an acceptable driving performance. These are dependent on the choice of components and the topology in which they are used. In a conventional gasoline vehicle, the powertrain topology is constrained to a few well-understood layouts;these typically consist of a single engine driving one axle or both axles through a multi-ratio gearbox. With electric vehicles, there is more flexibility, and the design space is relatively unexplored. In this paper, we evaluate several different topologies as follows: a traditional topology using a single electric motor driving a single axle with a fixed gear ratio;a topology using separate motors for the front axle and the rear axle, each with its own fixed gear ratio;a topology using in-wheel motors on a single axle;a four-wheel-drive topology using in-wheel motors on both axes. multi-objective optimisation techniques are used to find the optimal component sizing for a given requirement set and to investigate the trade-offs between the energy consumption, the powertrain cost and the acceleration performance. The paper concludes with a discussion of the relative merits of the different topologies and their applicability to real-world passenger cars.
