To offer those who are engaged in oil development a multi-objective design method of borehole trajectory for a directional well, the author adopted optimization theory to build a multi-objective optimization mathematic model with the shortest trajectory, the lowest drill string torque and the minimum rig hook load as final objectives, and put forward an approach to seek effective solutions to these multi-objective programming problems with ideal point method. The approach proposed in the paper can help satisfy concurrently multiple objectives of drilling design for an oilfield to implement the multi-objective optimization design schemes of borehole trajectory for a directional well, and to reduce the oilfield development costs accordingly.

Design of bending-active tied arches by using a multi-objective optimization method

The design of bending-active structures is a challenging problem, due to the high non-linearity of the activation process, the coupling between member sizing, structural shape and the deformability and buckling sensitivity inherent in the resulting lightweight configurations. Due to the large number of form-finding variables, the choice of member sizing is one of the main difficulties at the conceptual phase. In this paper, authors propose a design tool to generate efficient structural configurations for braced bending-active tied arches using multi objective optimization strategies. Initially, a non-linear FE analysis is performed for each plausible configuration and at each generation of the optimization algorithm. In a second step, a genetic algorithm classifies the solutions and establishes new structural configurations according to best performance. Solutions are evaluated in terms of stresses in the active member and cables, and maximum deflections, as required by design codes for pedestrian bridges. Results are given in terms of non-dimensional parameters, in order to make them applicable to a wide variety of scales.

Research on multi-objective optimization method for flow distribution of natural circulation reactor during its life-cycle

A reasonable flow distribution can flatten the temperature distribution at the core outlet and reduce the temperature fluctuation, improving the economy and safety of the reactor. Different from a forced circulation reactor, the flow distribution of a natural circulation reactor is automatically adjusted according to the relationship between the fuel assembly power and inlet resistance. In this work, first, a local optimal flow distribution calculation model is constructed based on the closed parallel multi-channel model. Second, a multi-objective comprehensive evaluation based on the optimal time zone is proposed to find an optimal flow distribution scheme that satisfies multiple requirements during the entire life-cycle. Third, the flow distribution scheme of a small lead-bismuth fast reactor with long life and natural circulation (SPALLER-100) is studied. The Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) algorithm is chosen as the evaluation method with three evaluating indicators for calculation. Ultimately, the subchannel code is selected to verify the flow distribution scheme. The analysis results show that the scheme based on the power distribution of 3182 days performs the best. Compared with the scheme designed by the beginning of life (BOL), the maximum outlet temperature difference reduced by 30 K, the standard deviation of the maximum outlet temperature difference reduced by 41%, and maximum output power increased by 2.35%. The results are in good agreement with the SUBCHANFLOW code, and the maximum relative error is less than 4.5%. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In recent years, water leakage problems in water distribution networks (WDN) have been attracting more attention, with an emphasis on energy and water resources. As one of the measures used for flow monitoring and leakage control, water network sectorization is a research hotspot in China. This paper, which begins with an introduction of present sectorization methods, proposes a multi-objective optimization sectorization method based on a comprehensive consideration of the hydraulics, water quality and economy. This method is based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) which is a heuristic algorithm formulti-objective optimization to obtain the optimal schemes. In addition, human experience is also considered in the optimization process. In a case study, this method proves to be efficient in producing good results with little impact on the hydraulics andwater quality of theWDN, and the results obtained are acceptable for multiple objectives. Inflow control device (ICD) restricts flows of certain sections to achieve a uniform push of water oil contact along a horizontal well. The efficiency of ICD depends on its configuration (location, number of nozzles, and nozzle sizes). Traditionally, optimal ICD configurations have been selected using a trial and error approach simulating different configurations. This method is time-consuming and the outcome can be limited by pre-set candidates, thus may result in non-optimal configurations. In this paper, a method involving several optimization objectives is proposed to obtain the optimal ICD configuration, in order to reach an optimal total production before water breakthrough. A flow coupling model (permeation flow – nozzle flow – inner tubing flow) of horizontal wells completed by ICDs is established to calculate the inflow profile and the pressure distribution along the horizontal wellbore. The production rate and the water breakthrough time are the optimization objectives, and the sand control condition (production pressure drawdown < critical pressure drawdown of sanding onset) is taken as one of the constraints of optimization. Then the NSGA-II algorithm is employed to search for the Pareto frontier based on the model of coupled flow. Selected by the TOPSIS method from the Pareto frontier, the optimal ICD configuration ensuring optimal total production and no sanding is acquired. The original data of well A1 in SL oilfield are used for case study. The optimal configuration is compared with single-objective optimization results and open hole completion in terms of production rate and water breakthrough time. By predicting the total productions of different configurations before water breakthrough, we think the optimization method is capable of determining the optimal configuration. This research can provide some theoretical support for the determination of ICD configuration in horizontal wells.

Supersonic separator is an efficient technology for gas removal and carbon capture. To enhance its performance, many researchers have studied its structure;however, existing studies have primarily used traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models for single-objective structural optimization of the separator's separation performance. However, in the supersonic separators, separation efficiency and pressure-loss ratio are the most important and conflicting performance parameters, and evaluating separation performance in isolation from either one is incomplete. In the present study, we develop a gas-liquid two-phase three-field CFD model considering liquid films. This mathematical model is combined with the non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) for multi-objective optimization of the coupled multiple structural parameters with the objective of the separation efficiency and pressure-loss ratio. The results indicate that the maximum relative errors between simulated and predicted values for the four Pareto optimal solutions in computing pressure loss ratio and separation efficiency are 5.4% and 5.3%, respectively. The optimized solutions achieve the maximum reduction in pressure loss ratio of 28.3% at the same 90% separation efficiency compared to the original structure.

This research aims to provide a holistic solution for optimizing window surface Sv area and glazing thickness d in test room under an overcast sky. By focusing on daylighting, thermal resistance, and acoustic insulation, we seek to achieve a balance that enhances overall indoor environmental quality. Utilizing advanced multi-objective optimization techniques (MOGA) in MATLAB, particularly the Pareto optimization approach, this study evaluates the trade-offs among the competing objectives of daylight factor (DFm), thermal resistance (Rth), and acoustic insulation (R). Our findings determine the optimal configuration of window surface (Sv = 5.1074 m2) and glazing thickness (d = 0.0239m) that concurrently improves natural lighting (DFm" of 55.62 %.), thermal insulation (Rth" by 41.25 %), and noise reduction (R '' by 84.53 %). In addition, increasing the glass thickness d is a determined factor that enhance thermal resistance Rth and sound reduction index R. This method offers architects valuable insights into how different parameters affect building design objectives, helping them achieve an optimal window design and glass thickness that enhances daylight performance while improving indoor thermal conditions and acoustic insulation.

Optimal Control of Active Power Filters using Fractional Order Controllers Based on NSGA-II optimization method

Elitist Non-Dominated Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) optimization method offers optimal solution to multidimensional objective functions. In this paper, this optimization method is used for designing Fractional Order PI controller that features a better performance than the Integer Order PI controller for improving the performance of a Shunt Active Power Filter. Controller synthesis is based on required Total Harmonic Distortion and transient specifications. The characteristic equation is minimized to obtain an optimal set of controller variables. This process is done by using the Integer Order PI controller and Fractional Order PI controller with the high performance Repetitive Controller. Simulation results are obtained by using the Fractional Order PI controller are better than the ones are obtained by using the Integer Order PI controller. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Distributed generation planning based on the distribution company's and the DG owner's profit maximization

In recent years, Distributed Generation (DG) has been utilized in electric power networks increasingly. DG units can affect the system operational conditions in different ways such as voltage profile improvement, amending voltage stability, reliability enhancement, securing power market, etc. if they are managed properly. Otherwise, they may have undesirable impacts on technical issues of power grids. A lot of studies have been done on various aspects of control and operation of DG units to find the optimal placement, sizing and also the proper technology of them. This paper proposes a novel comprehensive economic method for planning DG units which considers both the Distribution Company's (DisCo) and the DG Owner's (DGO) profits simultaneously. multi-objective particle swarm optimization technique is used to simulate many case studies on the IEEE 33-bus distribution test system and finally find the best solution for the placement, size and contract price of the generated power of DGs. The proposed methodology not only considers operational aspects such as power loss reduction, voltage profile and stability improvement and reliability enhancement, but also leads to an accurate analysis which satisfies both the DisCo's and the DGO's economic viewpoints. Finally, an encouragement to invest more on DG technologies is proposed based on the gained results. Copyright (c) 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
