The objective of this paper is to present an optimal model to address the water resources utilization of the Tao River basin in China. The Tao River water diversion project has been proposed to alleviate the problem of water shortages in Gansu Province in China. A multi reservoir system is under consideration with multiple objectives including water diversion, ecological water demand, irrigation, hydropower generation, industrial requirements, and domestic uses in the Tao River basin. A multi-objective model for the minimization of water shortages and the maximization of hydro-power production is proposed to manage the utilization of Tao River water resources. An adjustable PSO-GA (particle swarm optimization - genetic algorithm) hybrid algorithm is proposed that combines the strengths of PSO and GA to balance natural selection and good knowledge sharing to enable a robust and efficient search of the solution space. Two driving parameters are used in the adjustable hybrid model to optimize the performance of the PSO-GA hybrid algorithm by assigning a preference to either PSO or GA. The results show that the proposed hybrid algorithm can simultaneously obtain a promising solution and speed up the convergence.

Lake surface area method to define minimum ecological lake level from level-area-storage curves

Lake level assessment is essential for the protection of ecosystem in shrunk or shrinking lakes. Mini- mum ecological lake level is the critical lake level below which there should be no human activities to further de- crease the lake level, and this level can provide a certain protection for the lake ecosystem. Lake surface area method was proposed to define the minimum ecological lake storage as the breakpoint of the lake surface area-storage curve, where the curve slope equals to the ratio of maximum lake surface area to maximum lake storage. If the curve can be expressed as a simple analytical function, the minimum ecological lake storage can be calculated analytically. Otherwise, it can be calculated numerically using the ideal point method for an equivalent multi-objective optimization model that balances ecosystem protection and water use. Then the minimum ecological lake level can be estimated from the lake level-storage curve. Compared with available lake morphology analysis methods, the lake surface area method is superior in its definition of minimum ecological lake level, applicable range of lake morphology, and calculation complexity. The proposed method was applied to two representative lakes in China, including one freshwater lake （the Dongting Lake in Hunan province in Central China） and one saltwater lake （the Ebinur Lake in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in Northwest China）. The estimated minimum ecological lake level for the Dongting Lake is 26.7 m, at which 31% of the maximum lake storage provides 87% of the maximum lake surface area. The result for the Ebinur Lake is 191.2 m, at which 24% of the maximum lake storage provides 54% of the maximum lake surface area. The estimated minimum ecological lake level balances the conflict between economical and ecological water uses, and can provide a relatively larger habitat for the lake ecosystem with relatively smaller lake storage. Estimating irrigation water demand using an improved method and optimizing reservoir operation for water supply and hydropower generation: A case study of the Xinfengjiang reservoir in southern China

The ever-increasing demand for water due to growth of population and socioeconomic development in the past several decades has posed a worldwide threat to water supply security and to the environmental health of rivers. This study aims to derive reservoir operating rules through establishing a multi-objective optimization model for the Xinfengjiang (XFJ) reservoir in the East River Basin in southern China to minimize water supply deficit and maximize hydropower generation. Additionally, to enhance the estimation of irrigation water demand from the downstream agricultural area of the XFJ reservoir, a conventional method for calculating crop water demand is improved using hydrological model simulation results. Although the optimal reservoir operating rules are derived for the XFJ reservoir with three priority scenarios (water supply only, hydropower generation only, and equal priority), the river environmental health is set as the basic demand no matter which scenario is adopted. The results show that the new rules derived under the three scenarios can improve the reservoir operation for both water supply and hydropower generation when comparing to the historical performance. Moreover, these alternative reservoir operating policies provide the flexibility for the reservoir authority to choose the most appropriate one. Although changing the current operating rules may influence its hydropower-oriented functions, the new rules can be significant to cope with the increasingly prominent water shortage and degradation in the aquatic environment. Overall, our results and methods (improved estimation of irrigation water demand and formulation of the reservoir optimization model) can be useful for local watershed managers and valuable for other researchers worldwide. This paper investigates the multi-objective problem of deploying wireless sensor networks with cooperative distance-based sensing coverage. This problem considers deploying a number of sensor nodes to cove multiple target points on a deployment area. Based on the locations of target points and the sensor nodes with their own inner and outer coverage radii, the distance-based sensing coverages of target nodes by sensor nodes are divided into three categories: full coverage (i.e., within the inner coverage radius), no coverage (i.e., outside the outer coverage radius), and partial coverage (i.e., between the inner and outer radii). Furthermore, this paper additionally considers the cooperative sensing coverage in which the sensing coverage of a target point is provided by more than one sensor node. The decision of sensor deployment in this paper is to select sensor nodes from potential sensor node positions so as to simultaneously maximize the collective sensing coverage of all target points and minimize the total distances between each target point and the selected sensor node(s). This paper first formulates this problem as a multi-objective optimization model, and then develops a solution procedure to determine the best non-dominated solution set for the problem model. Numerical experiments for the concerned problem by the proposed solution approach are demonstrated.

The slow traffic in cities with pedestrians and bicycles is becoming more and more important due to their environmental protection and low carbon. However, the driving at the road intersections is seriously mixed and easy to jam. Traffic delays mainly occur here. Improving the traffic efficiency of the intersections plays an important role for the alleviation of traffic congestion. In this paper, a multi-objective signal timing optimization model is established about the vehicle average delay, slow traffic delay, vehicle stopping times and traffic capacity. Then an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) is used to solve it. The experimental results show that the model is optimized to reduce the vehicle delay, slow traffic delay and stopping times of an intersection, and then increase the traffic capacity. So the multiple indicators of an intersection are improved, which have significant effects on the increase of operational efficiency of an intersection.

A cost-emission framework for hub energy system under demand response program

Based on the kind of fuel consumed by generation unit, each generation system has different generation costs and emits various types of greenhouse gases like CO2, SO2 and NO2 to the atmosphere. So, nowadays in the power system scheduling, emission issue has been turned to be an important factor. In this paper, in addition to economic performance, emission problem of energy hub system has been also investigated. Therefore, a multi-objective optimization model has been proposed for cost-environmental operation of energy hub system in the presence of demand response program (DRP). Weighted sum approach has been employed to solve the proposed multi-objective model and fuzzy satisfying technique has been implemented to select the best compromise solution. Implementation of load management programs presented by DRP shifts some percentage of load from peak periods to off-peak periods to flatten load curve which leads to reduction of total cost and emission of energy hub system. A mixed integer linear programming has been used to model the cost-environmental performance problem of energy hub system and then, GAMS optimization software has been utilized to solve it. A sample energy hub system has been studied and the obtained results have been compared to validate the effectiveness of proposed techniques. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Autonomous connected electric vehicle (ACEV)-based car-sharing system modeling and optimal planning: A unified two-stage multi-objective optimization methodology

The car-sharing system based on booming autonomous connected electric vehicles (ACEV-based car sharing system) has a large potential to significantly improve mobility, safety, and environmental friendliness of current transportation systems. However, the ACEV-based car-sharing system lacks comprehensive investigations which considering new emerging features. Also, it is constrained by inherent shortages of traditional car-sharing policies and various involved electric vehicle technologies, e.g., high-cost vehicle relocation, limited vehicle range and long recharge time. To address these problems, a general two-stage multi-objective optimization model is proposed, where it comprehensively formulates the emerging features and mitigates the inherent shortages. Two major goals are achieved, where the appropriated geographical service area is optimized in the first stage and the charging infrastructure allocation is efficiently processed in the second stage. In each stage, the multi-objective optimization model would simultaneously benefit both users and service providers. Also, a novel hybrid parking mechanism is proposed to compromise user flexibility and system management efficiency. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method from multiple perspectives. (1) With appropriate estimations of a geographical service area and a reasonable ratio of vehicles to charging infrastructures, the proposed system can offer users efficient service qualities while maintaining a high vehicle usage frequency simultaneously. (2) Further, we find that the electric vehicle (EV) range, the charging speed, and the vehicle supply have a significant impact on the system. Especially, it noted that a fast charging speed gains a vital operation efficiency improvement. (3) In addition, more benefits are achieved when AV and CV technologies are adopted in the system. Customized public transit, as a diversified passenger service mode proposed under the new situation, not only deals with the comfortable and convenient commuting needs of most commuters, but also improves the efficiency of road use effectively and alleviates the road traffic pressure in the morning and evening rush hours. Currently, various routing optimization methods based on static passenger requests have been applied to the optimization design of customized bus routing in major cities, but the static passenger requests cannot satisfy the dynamic passenger requests of random users at present Therefore, it is urgent and necessary to investigate real-time customized bus routing optimization methods based on static passenger requests and dynamic passenger requests. In this paper, our goal is to present an approach to tackle two important issues of real-time customized bus route optimization under stochastic user demand: one is that how to deal with dynamic travel requests in a specific road network to improve passengers' satisfaction with customized bus services;the other is that how to employ specific methods to achieve real-time updating of customized bus routes to meet the random user's travel requests. Starting from the whole operation process of customized bus, we firstly construct a multi-objective optimization model of customized bus route, and clearly depicts the four processes of customized bus operation in the form of mathematical expressions. Second, we design a two-stage method based on NSGA-II algorithm to solve the model, in which the first stage deals with static bus travel requests to obtain the initial customized bus route optimization scheme, and the second stage deals with dynamic bus travel requests to update the customized bus route in real time. Study on an airport gate assignment method based on improved ACO algorithm

Purpose - This study aims to propose a new airport gate assignment method to effectively improve the comprehensive operation capacity and efficiency of hub airport. Gate assignment is one of the most important tasks for airport ground operations, which assigns appropriate airport gates with high efficiency reasonable arrangement. Design/methodology/approach - In this paper, on the basis of analyzing the characteristics of airport gates and flights, an efficient multi-objective optimization model of airport gate assignment based on the objectives of the most balanced idle time, the shortest walking distances of passengers and the least number of flights at apron is constructed. Then an improved ant colony optimization (ICQACO) algorithm based on the ant colony collaborative strategy and pheromone update strategy is designed to solve the constructed model to fast realize the gate assignment and obtain a rational and effective gate assignment result for all flights in the different period. Findings - In the designed ICQACO algorithm, the ant colony collaborative strategy is used to avoid the rapid convergence to the local optimal solution, and the pheromone update strategy is used to quickly increase the pheromone amount, eliminate the interference of the poor path and greatly accelerate the convergence speed. Practical implications - The actual flight data from Guangzhou Baiyun airport of China is selected to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the constructed multi-objective optimization model and the designed ICQACO algorithm. The experimental results show that the designed ICQACO algorithm can increase the pheromone amount, accelerate the convergence speed and avoid to fall into the local optimal solution. The constructed multi-objective optimization model can effectively improve the comprehensive operation capacity and efficiency. This study is a verymeaningful work for airport gate assignment.
