In order to improve the computing precision and computing efficiency of strength of woven composite material, the strength of woven composite material based on multi-scale finite element method (MsFEM) is simulated. The periodical boundary conditions are applied to the finite element method analyses to ensure stress continuous and strain continuous on boundary surfaces. The method can efficiently capture the large scale behavior of the solution without resolving all the small scale features by constructing the multi-scale finite element base functions that are adaptive to the local property of the differential operator. The characteristic difference between MsFEM and the conventional finite element method is attributed to base function. The applications demonstrate that the advantages of the multi-scale finite element method for numerical simulation of strength problem of woven composite material, i.e. significantly reducing computational efforts, and improving the accuracy of the solutions.

Numerical calculation of electromagnetic fields plays an important role in the design of electrical equipment. However, due to the special structure of certain equipment, traditional numerical calculation methods often meet great difficulties when dealing with such problems. For example, in the design process of the transformer core, it is difficult to calculate the electromagnetic field around the core due to the nonlinearity of the material, the huge size difference between the silicon steel sheet and the core, and the complexity of the air gap distribution. Taking the widely used commercial numerical calculation software as an example, the finite element method is used in the numerical calculation process, and many elements and nodes are used in the process. This will lead to a complex mesh and cost a lot of computing resources and a long computing time. This paper improves on the widely used conventional finite element method (CFEM) and proposes a multi-scale finite element method (MSFEM). Using a special interpolation built with an enrichment function, the elements are not restricted by media or geometry. Taking Team Workshop problem 10 as a numerical example, the accuracy of this method and the saving of computational costs have been proved.

Due to complexity of micro-structure of knitted fabric, there is little related work reported in literatures. With the aid of the micro-mechanical model of knitted fabric which characterizes the special properties of knitted fabric, the draping and buckling of a square knitted fabric sheet putting on a circular desk are successfully simulated by multi-scale finite element methods (MsFEM) and traditional finite element method. The knitted fabric sheet is discretized with 8-nodes shell elements, which are designed for finite deformation and suffice to describe the large rotation of knitted fabric sheet during draping. For the sake of simplicity, the nodes of the knitted fabric sheet on the edge of the desk are assumed to fix. The simulation results of MsFEM are compared with the experimental ones, and in good agreement with the observations. The result demonstrates that the advantages of the multi-scale finite element method for numerical simulation of knitted fabric material, i.e. significantly reducing computational efforts, and improving the accuracy of the solutions.

The mufti-scale finite element method (MsFEM) and a multi-scale model for fabric material are introduced. MsFEM methods can capture the effect of small scales on the large scales without resolving all the small scale features. The model is based on the assumption that, at the continuum level, fabric behaves as a finitely deformable membrane. Moreover, the fabric is assumed to be composed of two families of continuously distributed yarns constrained at all time to occupy a common evolving surface in three dimensional spaces. Draping and buckling of woven fabric are simulated with multi-scale finite element method. The simulated results are in good agreement with the experimental observations. The results show that precision of the draping and buckling simulation is improved evidently because of the multi-scale model. The investigation sets up the theory and technique basis for the fitting system in the dress CAD.

Efficient triple-grid multiscale finite element method for 3D groundwater flow simulation in heterogeneous porous media

In this paper, an efficient triple-grid multiscale finite element method (ETMSFEM) is proposed for 3D groundwater simulation in heterogeneous porous media. The main idea of this method is to employ new 3D linear base functions and the domain decomposition technique to solve the local reduced elliptical problem, thereby simplifying the base function construction process and improving the efficiency. Furthermore, by using the ETMSFEM base functions, this method can solve Darcy's equation with high efficiency to obtain a continuous velocity field. Therefore, this method can considerably reduce the computational cost of solving for heads and velocities, which is crucial for large-scale 3D groundwater simulations. In the application section, we present numerical examples to compare the ETMSFEM with several classical methods to demonstrate its efficiency and effectiveness. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Stochastic multi-scale finite element based reliability analysis for laminated composite structures

This paper proposes a novel multi-scale approach for the reliability analysis of composite structures that accounts for both microscopic and macroscopic uncertainties, such as constituent material properties and ply angle. The stochastic structural responses, which establish the relationship between structural responses and random variables, are achieved using a stochastic multi-scale finite element method, which integrates computational homogenisation with the stochastic finite element method. This is further combined with the first-and second-order reliability methods to create a unique reliability analysis framework. To assess this approach, the deterministic computational homogenisation method is combined with the Monte Carlo method as an alternative reliability method. Numerical examples are used to demonstrate the capability of the proposed method in measuring the safety of composite structures. The paper shows that it provides estimates very close to those from Monte Carlo method, but is significantly more efficient in terms of computational time. It is advocated that this new method can be a fundamental element in the development of stochastic multi-scale design methods for composite structures. (C) 2017 The Author(s). Plastic failure risk of a metal matrix composite structure under variable thermal loads

In the heat sink components reinforced with fibrous metal matrix composites under cyclic heat flux loads;their structural reliability is frequently limited by the low cycle fatigue of the composites. The stress evolution in the composites becomes complex. In order to investigate the plastic failure risk of the composites, the stress evolution has to be tracked on different length scales. In addition, a proper criterion of plastic failure is needed for the relevant composite geometry and loads. In this work, a computational methodology is presented to estimate the plastic failure risk of a composite heat sink structure. This method was based on a triple scale non-linear finite element analysis and a shakedown theorem. Average lamina stresses were assessed using a micro-mechanics based constitutive law and compared with a shakedown boundary predicted by a direct shakedown analysis. By this comparison both the critical locations and the relative failure risk at each lamina could be identified. A remarkable merit of the current approach was that the computational costs could be enormously reduced by the two employed numerical techniques. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Exploiting the benefits of multi-scale analysis in reliability analysis for composite structures

This paper investigates two critical issues, namely propagation of multi-scale uncertainty, and selection of failure criteria, related to reliability analysis of composites by using multi-scale methods. Due to the multi-scale architecture of composites, uncertainties exist in both microscale and macroscale parameters. It is necessary, therefore,, to consider random variables at various length scales to ensure accurate estimates of the reliability of composites. Three types of homogenization methods, namely rule of mixtures, Mori-Tanaka and computational homogenization, are adopted to link these two scales, and to propagate uncertainty from micro to macro scales. By integrating these homogenization methods with the stochastic finite element method and structural reliability methods, the reliability of composites can be investigated with a limit state function based on a chosen failure criterion. This multi-scale reliability analysis procedure has been applied to analyse laminated fibre reinforced composites made of AS4/3501 carbon/epoxy. Firstly, a comparative study has been conducted to evaluate the performance of the assumed homogenization methods for the reliability of composites, and to identify advantages compared with a single scale analysis. The results show that multi-scale analysis can provide more accurate reliability estimates. Secondly, several popularly used failure criteria for composites have been compared using multi scale reliability analysis. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
