Optoelectronic motion capture technology is a useful tool in the quantitative dynamic assessment of the spine. In a clinical setting this may help gain a further understanding of underlining musculoskeletal pathology. It is therefore important that accurate measurements are made to allow data to be comparable across various investigations. This report outlines a new multi-segment spinal model and its validation. A mechanical model consisting of an upper thoracic (UT), lower thoracic and lumbar segment was developed allowing for range of motion assessment. An electrogoniometer and torsiometer were attached to the model to provide a control measurement. The UT segment was chosen for analysis and static trials were collected at angles ranging from 2-45 degrees. Kinematic data was captured using an optoelectronic motion capture system. Software computed angles corresponded well with the control measure. While highlighting the differences in the estimation of angles between software platforms, this study emphasizes the need for the clear description and understanding of the kinematic model used.

Foot motion on hallux valgus patients: a multi-segment foot model 10th

In these days, various foot problems have been rapidly increasing. Hallux vaigus(HV), one of the most popular foot diseases, is found especially in mid-aged women. The most common cause of HV is to wear with small and pointed shoes for a long time. If HV is left untreated, the deformity in the other regions of the foot also follows. Even though many motion analyses and radiologic studies have been applied to various foot diseases, they do not provide quantitative information on the detailed motion of the foot. The purpose of this study is to analyze detailed foot motions of the normal and HV patients using a multi-segment foot model. Ten healthy adults, who have no disorders in the lower extremity, participated in three dimensional gait analysis. Twelve HV patients of Grade 2 were also chosen for the study. Results showed that RV patients exhibited relatively smaller flexion/extension, especially in terminal stance. An early abduction at the ankle during terminal stance was also noted in HV patients, which resulted in an excessive abduction in subtalar joint. In HV patients, medial MP joints exhibited excessive amount of adduction during terminal stance. In HV patients, hallux MP joint and talocrural joint exhibited excessive external rotation over the whole period of gait cycle. Understanding the detailed foot motions by the present multi-segment foot model would be very useful to diagnose and to treat patients with various foot diseases, and helpful for the design of foot orthoses.

This thesis starts from the construction of a mathematical model of the multi-segment mooring line, based on the work-energy variational method. The equations of motion in both Cartesian and Lagrange local coordinate systems are derived. Meanwhile, with the catenary theory applied, the static equilibrium configuration of the multi-segment mooring line is determined. Furthermore, Galerkin's finite element method is used to generate mass, stiffness and damping coefficient matrices of a single mooring line. The coefficient matrices in the Lagrange local coordinate system are shown to be diagonal, which means the motions in the three directions of this coordinate system are uncoupled. With this information, the eigenvalue problem is solved to obtain the natural frequencies and associated mode shapes of a mooring line in both coordinate systems. By approximating the mooring line as a linear system, the modal superposition approach allows computationally efficient modeling of dynamics in the frequency domain, including estimation of extreme value statistics using Rice's theory for Gaussian processes. The accuracy of the modal superposition approach is demonstrated through comparison with results from nonlinear time domain simulations using OrcaFlex. This approximate modeling approach is useful for optimizing the design of a mooring system in the preliminary phases of design.

Site-selective core/shell deposition of tin on multi-segment nanowires for magnetic assembly and soldered interconnection

The field of nanotechnology continues to grow with the ongoing discovery and characterization of novel nanomaterials with unconventional size-dependent properties;however, the ability to apply modern manufacturing strategies for practical device design of these nanoscale structures is significantly limited by their small size. Although interconnection has been previously demonstrated between nanoscale components, such approaches often require the use of expensive oxidation-resistant noble metal materials and time-consuming or untargeted strategies for welded interconnection such as laser ablation or plasmonic resonance across randomly oriented component networks. In this work, a three-segment gold-nickel-gold nanowire structure is synthesized using templated electrodeposition and modified via monolayer-directed aqueous chemical reduction of tin solder selectively on the gold segments. This core/shell nanowire structure is capable of directed magnetic assembly tip-to-tip and along substrate pads in network orientation. Upon infrared heating in a flux vapor atmosphere, the solder payload melts and establishes robust and highly conductive wire-wire joints. The targeted solder deposition strategy has been applied to various other multi-segment gold/nickel nanowire configurations and other metallic systems to demonstrate the capability of the approach. This core/shell technique of pre-loading magnetically active nanowires with solder material simplifies the associated challenges of size-dependent component orientation in the manufacture of nanoscale electronic devices.

A novel multi-segment surface coil for neuro-functional magnetic resonance imaging

The construction of two novel multi-segment (MS) resonators are described, The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and B-1 homogeneity of the coils are compared with that of a surface coil and a standard quadrature head coil. The images obtained with the MS designs revealed a surface coil-like fall-off in signal with depth. The SNR offered by MS coils was found to be better than the head coil at depths less than approximately 6 cm. Bilateral motor cortex activation on normal subjects performing finger tapping tasks is demonstrated.

Selective versus multi-segmental decompression and fusion for multi-segment lumbar spinal stenosis with single-segment degenerative spondylolisthesis

BackgroundLumbar spinal stenosis, often accompanied by degenerative spondylolisthesis, is one of the most common conditions in the elderly. Decompression and fusion is a well-accepted treatment for single-segment lumbar spinal stenosis with degenerative spondylolisthesis;however, the treatment for multi-segment lumbar spinal stenosis with single-segment degenerative spondylolisthesis (MLSS) remains controversial. The objective of this study is to compare the effectiveness of selective decompression and fusion to multi-segmental decompression and fusion for *** total of 42 patients suffering from MLSS who underwent surgery between June 2012 and January 2015 were included in this analysis. Of the 42 patients with minimum 3-year follow-up, 22 underwent selective decompression and fusion, and 20 patients underwent multi-segmental decompression and fusion. Age, gender, symptom duration, operative time, blood loss, the number of decompressed segment and fused segment, and complication were compared between the two groups. The visual analog scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Short Form 36 (SF-36) were used to assess *** time, blood loss, and the number of fused segment in multi-segmental decompression and fusion group were greater than those in selective decompression and fusion group (P<0.01). The VAS, ODI, and SF-36 scores at 1-year follow-up and 3-year follow-up were significantly improved compared with those preoperatively in both groups (P<0.01) but were not significantly different between the two groups at each time point (P>0.05). There was no iatrogenic spinal instability in the decompressed segments in selective decompression and fusion group, while three patients developed postoperative instability at the adjacent segments above the fused segments in multi-segmental decompression and fusion group at 3-year *** decompression and fusion is a safe and effective method for the treatment of MLSS,

Background: The majority of multi-segment kinematic foot studies have been limited to barefoot conditions, because shod conditions have the potential for confounding surface-mounted markers. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a shoe modified with a webbed upper can accommodate multi-segment foot marker sets without compromising kinematic measurements under barefoot and shod conditions. Methods: Thirty participants (15 controls and 15 participants with midfoot pain) underwent gait analysis in two conditions;barefoot and wearing a shoe (shod) in a random order. The shod condition employed a modified shoe (rubber plimsoll) with a webbed upper, allowing skin mounted reflective markers to be visualised through slits in the webbed material. Three dimensional foot kinematics were captured using the Oxford multi-segment foot model whilst participants walked at a self-selected speed. Results: The foot pain group showed greater hindfoot eversion and less hindfoot dorsiflexion than controls in the barefoot condition and these differences were maintained when measured in the shod condition. Differences between the foot pain and control participants were also observed for walking speed in the barefoot and in the shod conditions. No significant differences between foot pain and control groups were demonstrated at the forefoot in either condition. Conclusions: Subtle differences between pain and control groups, which were found during barefoot walking are retained when wearing the modified shoe. The novel properties of the modified shoe offers a potential solution for the use of passive infrared based motion analysis for shod applications, for instance to investigate the kinematic effect of foot orthoses.

This paper presents the lumped magnetic circuit models for interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines with multi-segment and multilayer permanent magnets. The open-circuit air gap field distribution, average air gap flux density and leakage fluxes are derived analytically. The FEA is adopted to verify the developed models and analytical method. It shows that for the prototype machines, the errors between the FEA and analytically predicted results are <1% for multi-segment IPM machines and <2% for multilayer IPM machines.
