Understanding Energy Behaviors of Thread Management Constructs

Java programmers are faced with numerous choices in managing concurrent execution on multicore platforms. These choices often have different trade-offs (e.g., performance, scalability, and correctness guarantees). This paper analyzes an additional dimension, energy consumption. It presents an empirical study aiming to illuminate the relationship between the choices and settings of thread management constructs and energy consumption. We consider three important thread management constructs in concurrent programming: explicit thread creation, fixed-size thread pooling, and work stealing. We further shed light on the energy/performance trade-off of three "tuning knobs" of these constructs: the number of threads, the task division strategy, and the characteristics of processed data. Through an extensive experimental space exploration over real-world Java programs, we produce a list of findings about the energy behaviors of concurrent programs, which are not always obvious. The study serves as a first step toward improving energy efficiency of concurrent programs on parallel architectures.

It uses Windows low-level audio API to record and broadcast voice packets, encodes and decodes through G.729A, and groups by TCP/IP protocol, transmits data packets by UDP on the SOCK_DGRAM SOCKET between the client and the server, So as to achieve the function of Internet voice communication. To ensure user friendly interface, the premise here using multi-threaded programming. In addition, the system also in application-layer protocol adds the text chat function which based on TCP transmission. The essence of the design is to realize software to communicate by voice or text which based Windows operating system. The successful debugging of this software will have a positive effect on the PC to PC kind of VoIP communications system.

In the present era of mechanization, image segmentation has brought revolutionary changes in the field of image processing. There are many image segmentation methods in use but most of the prevalent techniques are not very efficient. In our current work, a method is proposed to segment images using multi-threaded programming and k-means clustering. Parts of images are used as a thread and k-means clustering is used to segment them on every thread. An efficient image segmentation technique using the multi-threaded program is done in this paper. These results are compared with segmentation results without multi-threading. The obtained results are very much encouraging.

Due to the inherent complexity of the concurrent behavior, it is difficult to ensure the program satisfies the concurrent properties. CSP#, as a formal language, is used to model the program and the properties can be verified on the CSP# model. It is desirable to have a transformation technique from the CSP# model to the implementation. We implement the CSP# operators in a C# library "***". Based on it, a code generation tool is developed in PAT framework to transform CSP# models to multi-threaded C# programs. We prove that the generated C# program and original CSP# model are equivalent on the traces semantics. The validated properties of the CSP# model preserve in the generated program.

An embedded image monitoring system based on TMS320DM642 Digital Signal Processor (DSP) is proposed for the transmission line monitoring. The system can detect galloping, ice or snow covering, and other abnormal status of the transmission line in a real time mode. The image detection algorithms are compared using the controlled experiment under the complex weather environment, thereby, a set of image processing algorithms is proposed for transmission lines image monitoring. The DSP/BOIS multi-threaded programming techniques are used to realize the algorithm in the DSPs' embedded software. A wireless communication based on General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) module is designed to transmit the detection results and the changed information of the image to the monitoring center, so that the operators can get the real time status of the transmission line. The application of the system will play an important role in the condition-based maintenance of power transmission lines and improve the reliability of power delivery system

Computing Optimised Parallel Speeded-Up Robust Features (P-SURF) on multi-Core Processors

This article presents a novel CPU-based parallel algorithm (P-SURF) that computes the Speeded-Up Robust Features (SURF), a local descriptor that is able to find point correspondences between images in spite of scaling and rotation. The algorithm presented here parallelises all the seven major steps found in the original serial computation. The task in each of the steps is decomposed and the fractions are assigned to running threads bound onto distinctive processors. The implementation of the algorithm was tested using randomly selected images in regard to performance, scalability and stability. The results showed that its performance on mid-level Intel Core Duo processors was comparable to that of some fast GPU-based SURF implementations. For example, on a testing system equipped with an Intel Core Duo P8600 at 2.4 GHz, P-SURF was able to extract and represent features from a 640 x 480 image at a rate of 33 frames per second. The experimental results also revealed that, instead of leaving the threads to the kernel for processor assignment, assigning hard processor affinity by the algorithm produced better performance and stability.

Graphical processing unit implementation of an integrated shape-based active contour: Application to digital pathology

Commodity graphics hardware has become a cost-effective parallel platform to solve m any general computational problems. In medical imaging and more so in digital pathology, segmentation of multiple structures on high-resolution images, is often a complex and computationally expensive task. Shape-based level set segmentation has recently emerged as a natural solution to segmenting overlapping and occluded objects. However the flexibility of the level set method has traditionally resulted in long computation times and therefore might have limited clinical utility. The processing times even for moderately sized images could run into several hours of computation time. Hence there is a clear need to accelerate these segmentations schemes. In this paper, we present a parallel implementation of a computationally heavy segmentation scheme on a graphical processing unit (GPU). The segmentation scheme incorporates level sets with shape priors to segment multiple overlapping nuclei from very large digital pathology images. We report a speedup of 19× compared to multithreaded C and MATLAB-based implementations of the same scheme, albeit with slight reduction in accuracy. Our GPU-based segmentation scheme was rigorously and quantitatively evaluated for the problem of nuclei segmentation and overlap resolution on digitized histopathology images corresponding to breast and prostate biopsy tissue specimens.

Finding synchronization defects is difficult due to non-deterministic orderings of parallel threads. Current tools for detecting synchronization defects tend to miss man), data races or produce an overwhelming number of false alarms. In this paper, we describe Helgrind(+), a dynamic race detection tool that incorporates correct handling of condition variables and a combination of the lockset algorithm and happens-before relation. We compare our techniques with Intel Thread Checker and the original Helgrind tool on two substantial benchmark suites. Helgrind+ reduces the number of both false negatives (missed races) and false positives. The additional accuracy incurs almost no performance overhead.
