A multi-view 3D video processor was designed and implemented with several FPGAs for real-time applications and a 14 projection-type 3D display was introduced for low-cost commercialization. One high resolution projection panel and only one projection lens is capable of displaying multiview autostereoscopic images. It can cope with various arrangements of 3D camera systems (or pixel arrays) and resolutions of 3D displays. This system shows high 3-D image quality in terms of resolution, brightness, and contrast so it is well suited for the commercialization in the field of game and advertisement market.

An accurate quality metric, called GEQM, for gray-level edge maps based on the structural matching of edge pixels is proposed in this work. We design the positional matching cost, which reflects the distance between two edge pixels, and the structural matching cost, which measures the structural shapes of edges as well as the differences of edge strength levels. Based on the cost functions, we perform the graph-cut optimization to obtain the optimal pixel-based matching between source and target edge maps bidirectionally. Finally, we compute the GEQM score by summing up the optimal matching costs of all edge pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed GEQM performs the edge map quality assessment more accurately and more reliably than conventional metrics. Especially, GEQM is suitable for assessing the qualities of synthesized intermediate views in multi-view image processing.

Depth image based rendering (DIBR) is suited for 3D-TV and for autostereoscopic multiview displays. With DIBR, each 2D image captured with a camera at a given position has an associated depth map. This map is used to process the original 2D image so as to generate new images as if they were taken from different camera viewpoints. In the present study we examined the depth and image quality of stereoscopic 3D images that were generated using surrogate depth maps, that is, maps that were created using blur and edge information from the original 2D images. Depth maps were created with three different methods. Formal subjective assessments indicated that the stereoscopic images thus created have enhanced depth quality, with a marginal loss in image quality, when compared to the original non-stereoscopic images. This finding of enhanced depth is surprising because the surrogate depth maps contained limited depth information and mainly at object boundaries. We speculate that the visual system combines the information from pictorial depth cues and from depth interpolation between object boundaries and edges to arrive at an overall perception of depth. The methods for creating the depth maps for stereoscopic imaging that were investigated in this study might be used in applications where depth accuracy is not critical.

A technique to improve the image quality of stereoscopic pictures generated from depth maps (depth image based rendering or DIBR) is examined. In general, there are two fundamental problems with DIBR: a depth map could contain artifacts (e.g., noise or "blockiness") and there is no explicit information on how to render newly exposed regions ("holes") in the rendered image as a result of new virtual camera positions. We hypothesized that smoothing depth maps before rendering will not only minimize the effects of noise and distortions in the depth maps but will also reduce areas of newly exposed regions where potential artifacts can arise. A formal subjective assessment of four stereoscopic sequences of natural scenes was conducted with 23 viewers. The stereoscopic sequences consisted of source images for the left-eye view and rendered images for the right-eye view. The depth maps were smoothed with a Gaussian blur filter at different levels of strength before depth image based rendering. Results indicated that ratings of perceived image quality improved with increasing levels of smoothing of the depth maps. Even though the depth maps were smoothed, a negative effect on ratings of overall perceived depth quality was not found.

Self-training plays an important role in sports exercise. However, if not under the instruction of a coach, it would be ineffective for most amateurs or inexperienced players to exercise on their own. Therefore, establishing computer-assisted training systems for sports exercise is a recently emerging topic. In this paper, we propose a billiard self-training system, which aims at improving billiard players' performance by utilizing intelligent glasses as a wearable camera and displayer. The proposed system is able to automatically analyze user-captured images of the billiard table from multiple views and display the ball configurations on a virtual top-view table. Enriched visual presentation can be provided to give the practitioner a further sight into the game. The experiments conducted on sixteen sets of different ball configurations show promising results.

This paper presents a comprehensive method for real-time 3D human skeleton reconstruction from calibrated camera sets, addressing challenges in scenes with multiple individuals. Accurate 3D pose estimation is crucial for various applications such as 3D model animation, augmented reality, and human-computer interaction. The approach involves initial 2D skeleton estimation, followed by skeleton identification through a matching algorithm and reconstruction via triangulation. Three key enhancements were implemented: refining the matching algorithm using 3D reconstruction reprojection, accelerating execution with skeleton tracking, and validation on a diverse dataset with over 9,000 frames. The method achieves accurate 3D reconstruction and robust performance in multi-individual scenarios, making it suitable for real-world applications. Project page: https://instant- ***.

In a technique called depth image based rendering, new images are generated using information from an original source image and its corresponding depth map, such that the new images appear to have been taken from different camera viewpoints. This technique is bandwidth-efficient and is ideal for multiview display systems, such as autostereoscopic 3D-TV. In a previous study, we demonstrated that uniform smoothing of depth maps through Gaussian filtering helps improve the image quality of the rendered images. In the present study we investigated the potential benefits of two non-uniform smoothing methods: asymmetric smoothing, where the horizontal extent of smoothing was smaller than that in the vertical direction, and adaptive smoothing, where the level and extent of smoothing was based on the local depth magnitude. In this vein, ten viewers assessed image quality and depth quality of four stereoscopic images in which the view to one eye was a rendered image based on one of the three smoothing methods: uniform, asymmetric, or adaptive. The experimental results showed an improvement in ratings of image quality for all three methods as the level of smoothing was increased. The results also indicated a slight advantage in image quality for asymmetric smoothing over the other two methods. Ratings of overall depth quality were significantly higher than correspondig non-stereoscopic references for all three methods, although the ratings decreased at the highest level of smoothing that was used in the present study. In general, ratings of depth quality tended to be marginally lower for the asymmetric method.

UTexGen: High-quality texture reconstruction for large-scale scenes using multi-view images

When reconstructing extensive terrain, it is essential to partition it into smaller tiles for individual processing. This paper introduces a texture reconstruction approach that ensures seamless and consistent final outputs, even when processed tile by tile. Among the stages of multi-view image-based reconstruction, texture reconstruction presents significant challenges during tile-based processing. Relying solely on local tile-level data complicates achieving precise texture mapping. The absence of occlusion details between tiles can lead to selecting incorrect images as the best visible ones or adjusting tile texture colors differently, resulting in noticeable grid-like texture seams in the final result. To mitigate these issues, we leverage global depth maps to accurately detect occlusions between neighboring tiles. Furthermore, by utilizing a shared texture candidate list, we establish uniform targets for texture color correction across tiles. Experimental findings demonstrate that leveraging global information for texture reconstruction on a tile-by-tile basis enables the creation of smooth and realistic texture maps, as validated through comparisons with existing methodologies.
