Rate control is an important component of an end-to-end video communication system. Currently, there are several proposals for rate control in the upcoming High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard, but none specifically for the multi-view extension of the standard. In this paper, we apply one of the HEVC single-view rate control schemes to the multi-view scenario, and propose two improvements. One improvement deals with Quantization Parameter (QP) initialization, and the other deals with interview Mean Absolute Difference (MAD) prediction. Experimental results demonstrate increased accuracy of rate control, reduced fluctuation of instantaneous bitrate, as well as a reduction in PSNR degradation compared to the existing rate control algorithm.

Rate control is an important component of an end-to-end video communication system. Although rate control is not a part of a video coding standard, it is necessary for practical deployment. Currently, there are several proposals for rate control in the upcoming High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard, but there is no rate control scheme for HEVC-based multi-view extension. In this paper, we apply the newly recommended R-lambda model-based HEVC rate control to the multi-view scenario, and propose two improvements. One improvement deals with Quantization Parameter (QP) initialization, and the other deals with adaptive Mean Absolute Difference (MAD) prediction. Results demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed methods, the resulting reduced fluctuation of instantaneous bitrate, as well as an improvement in rate-distortion performance compared to the R-lambda rate control alone.

multi-view video allows us to experience more realistic feelings with arbitrary view-points and a wide range of scenes, because those are captured by multiple cameras simultaneously but at different positions. Since the amount of data to be processed increases in proportion to the number of cameras, we need to develop efficient coding methods. In this paper, we propose an efficient view interpolation scheme and coding method for multi-view video using the correlation between views. After generating an intermediate view image, we use it at the encoder as an additional reference frame using the proposed 'VIP P-picture' coding method. The proposed view interpolation method improves the generated inter-view image about 1 similar to 4 dB and the 'VIP P-picture' coding method improves coding efficiency about 0.5 dB.

Rate control has not been well studied for multi-view video coding (MVC). We propose a rate control algorithm for MVC based on the quadratic rate-distortion model. We remodel the quadratic rate-distortion model for multi-view videos based on the type of each frame. In the frame level, the quantization parameters are set according to the parameters of the various kinds of image model which is set up through the analysis of the coded information. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme can allocate the bits and control the rate efficiently.

Three-dimensional video (3DV) technology is becoming increasingly popular, as it can provide high quality and immersive experience to end users. Huge amount of data for storage and transmission is an important problem to be solved. In this paper, an asymmetric MVC method is proposed. Color correction is first performed as a preprocessing step to provide consistent color information among views. Then, all color corrected views are classified into color views and non-color views. The chrominance information in non-color views is all discarded and only preserved in color view in MVC codec. Thus, a large amount of coding bitrate can be saved. At the decoder, a chrominance reconstruction algorithm is presented to achieve accurate color reconstruction for those non-color views. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve large bitrate saving against the results compressed with the original JMVM codec. Moreover, the proposed method can obtain better reconstruction quality without noticeable quality degradation.

The multi-view video coding (MVC) technique provides significantly better coding efficiency compared to simulcast transmission of different camera view-points. This is done by exploiting both motion and disparity compensation techniques to compress the different view-point videos. This paper proposes a more efficient MVC technique that transmits the optimally selected compensation replacements with respect to more accurate compensation vector predictors obtained using the multi-view geometry and the depth information. In this technique, the SKIP mode is also modified to adapt its compensation direction from both the temporal and the view-point reference frames. Experimental results show that the proposed MVC technique gives an average gain in video quality of about 0.5dB, for the interview predicted view-points.

With the advancement of computer graphics and computer vision technologies, the realistic visual system can come true in the near future. The multi-view video system can provide an augmented realism through selective viewing experience. The multi-view video is a collection of multiple videos capturing the same 3D scene at different viewpoints. Since the data size of the multi-view video increases proportionally to the number of cameras, it is necessary to compress multi-view video data for efficient storage and transmission. This paper provides an overview of multi-view video coding (MVC) and describes its applications, requirements, and the reference software model for MVC.

multi-view video coding (MVC) employs both motion and disparity estimation within the encoding process. These provide a significant increase in coding efficiency at the expense of a substantial increase in computational requirements. This paper presents a fast motion and disparity estimation technique that utilizes the multi-view geometry together with the depth information and the corresponding encoded motion vectors from the reference view, to produce more reliable motion and disparity vector predictors for the current view. This allows for a smaller search area which reduces the computational cost of the multi-view encoding system. Experimental results confirm that the proposed techniques can provide a speed-up gain of up to 4.2 times, with a negligible loss in the rate-distortion performance for both the color and the depth MVC.

In multi-view video system, variations of different camera setups (for example, camera positions, lighting conditions and camera characteristics) might cause discrepancies on the luminance and chrominance components of different views. From the viewpoint of source compression, this will lead to inaccurate inter-view prediction and lower coding efficiency. In this paper, a histogram-offset-based color correction method is developed for benefitting multi-view video coding. First, disparity estimation is conducted on the rank-transformed domain to identify the maximum matching regions between the reference view and the target view. Within the identified matching regions, the histograms of the reference view and the target view are then calculated, respectively. By using an iterative thresholding approach, a histogram offset is generated and exploited to correct the target view. Experimental results have shown that the proposed color correction method outperforms the histogram matching method on the improvement of coding efficiency.

Disparity estimation and mode decisions are key techniques in multi-view video coding (MVC) which could improve the compression efficiency when the computational complexity increasing greatly. Based on Kalman filtering, a novel fast disparity estimation and mode decision algorithm is presented in this paper. We firstly built a autoregressive (AR) model of disparity vectors on the basis of spatio-temporal correlation so as to achieve a preliminary result of disparity estimation. Furthermore, the Kalman filter is utilized to optimize and improve the estimation speed. Moreover, an effective reliability judgment method for mode prediction is presented, with which, a more precious mode prediction result can be obtained and the selected range of coding mode is effectively reduced to achieve low complexity mode decision. The experimental results show that the computational complexity is significantly reduced while the compression efficiency is still maintained.
