Adaptive delivery of immersive 3D multi-view video over the Internet

The increase in Internet bandwidth and the developments in 3D video technology have paved the way for the delivery of 3D multi-view video (MVV) over the Internet. However, large amounts of data and dynamic network conditions result in frequent network congestion, which may prevent video packets from being delivered on time. As a consequence, the 3D video experience may well be degraded unless content-aware precautionary mechanisms and adaptation methods are deployed. In this work, a novel adaptive MVV streaming method is introduced which addresses the future generation 3D immersive MVV experiences with multi-view displays. When the user experiences network congestion, making it necessary to perform adaptation, the rate-distortion optimum set of views that are pre-determined by the server, are truncated from the delivered MVV streams. In order to maintain high Quality of Experience (QoE) service during the frequent network congestion, the proposed method involves the calculation of low-overhead additional metadata that is delivered to the client. The proposed adaptive 3D MVV streaming solution is tested using the MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH) standard. Both extensive objective and subjective evaluations are presented, showing that the proposed method provides significant quality enhancement under the adverse network conditions.

Three-dimensional video (3DV) technology is becoming increasingly popular, as it can provide high quality and immersive experience to end users. Huge amount of data for storage and transmission is an important problem to be solved. In this paper, an asymmetric MVC method is proposed. Color correction is first performed as a preprocessing step to provide consistent color information among views. Then, all color corrected views are classified into color views and non-color views. The chrominance information in non-color views is all discarded and only preserved in color view in MVC codec. Thus, a large amount of coding bitrate can be saved. At the decoder, a chrominance reconstruction algorithm is presented to achieve accurate color reconstruction for those non-color views. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve large bitrate saving against the results compressed with the original JMVM codec. Moreover, the proposed method can obtain better reconstruction quality without noticeable quality degradation.

In multi-view video system, variations of different camera setups (for example, camera positions, lighting conditions and camera characteristics) might cause discrepancies on the luminance and chrominance components of different views. From the viewpoint of source compression, this will lead to inaccurate inter-view prediction and lower coding efficiency. In this paper, a histogram-offset-based color correction method is developed for benefitting multi-view video coding. First, disparity estimation is conducted on the rank-transformed domain to identify the maximum matching regions between the reference view and the target view. Within the identified matching regions, the histograms of the reference view and the target view are then calculated, respectively. By using an iterative thresholding approach, a histogram offset is generated and exploited to correct the target view. Experimental results have shown that the proposed color correction method outperforms the histogram matching method on the improvement of coding efficiency.

multi-view video coding (MVC) is very promising in applicable field for its 3D effect and interactive functions (multi viewpoint). In this paper, a network-friendly architecture for MVC is proposed. To exploit temporal as well as inter-view dependencies between adjacent cameras, two main features of the coder are used: hierarchical B picture and FGS (fine granularity scalable). coding results are shown for the proposed multi-view coder and compared to the traditional coding architectures to show that our presented coding scheme outperforms the other approaches for the tested sequence.

Exhaustive mode decision is exploited in multi-view video coding for effectively improving the coding efficiency, but at the expense of yielding higher computational complexity. In this paper, a fast mode decision algorithm, called the mode-correlation-based early termination (MET), is proposed. For each macroblock, the proposed MET algorithm always starts with checking whether the rate-distortion (RD) cost computed at the SKIP mode is below an adaptive threshold for providing a possible early termination chance. This adaptive threshold is calculated by using the mode correlation between the current macroblock and a set of adjacent macroblocks in the current view and its neighboring view. Experimental results have shown that compared with exhaustive mode decision, which is a default approach set in the JMVM reference software, the proposed MET algorithm achieves a reduction of the computational complexity by 65.91% and the total bit rate by 0.98% on average, while incurring only 0.06 dB loss in peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).

In this paper, a parametric texture based video coding scheme is proposed for multi-view videos. The proposed scheme exploits the perceptual redundancy of the textured region in a statistical manner which is ignored in the multi-view video coding scheme of H.264/MVC. This statistical nature of texture is independent of the 3D scene structure. The set of most similar texture macroblocks over different frames is termed as a motion thread. In the proposed scheme, each P slice/frame of multiview video is categorized into non-texture blocks which are encoded by H.264/MVC and texture blocks which are encoded by our novel approach. These texture based motion threads are encoded with the help of Spatio-Temporal Autoregressive (STAR) model. These motion threads covers the temporal and interview movement of macroblocks maintaining consistency while STAR model exploits the temporal and inter-view perceptual redundancy in neighborhood. The proposed scheme achieves average gain as high as 4.9 dB PSNR over H.264/MVC for given multi-view videos.

In free viewpoint video (FVV) framework, a large number of viewpoints from limited number of views are generated to reduce the amount of transmitting, receiving and processing video data significantly. To generate a virtual view, the disparity among adjacent views or temporal correlation between different frames of the intermediate views are normally exploited. Those techniques may concern poor rendering quality by missing pixel values (i.e. creating holes) due to the occluded region, rounding error and disparity discontinuity. To address these problems recent techniques use inpainting, however, they still suffer quality degradation due to lack of spatial correlation on the foreground-background boundary areas. The background updating techniques with Gaussian mixture based modelling (GMM) can improve quality in some occluded areas, however, due to the dependencies on warping of background image and spatial correlation they still suffer quality degradation. In this paper, we propose a view synthesized prediction using Gaussian model (VSPGM) technique using the number of GMM models rather than the background image to identify background/foreground pixels. The missing pixels of background and foreground are recovered from the background pixel and the weighted average of warped and foreground model pixels respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed approach provides 0.50 similar to 2.14dB PSNR improved synthesized view compared with the state-of-the-art methods. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed synthesized view, we use it as a reference frame with immediate previous frame of current view in the motion estimation for multi-view video coding (MVC). The experimental results confirm that the proposed technique is able to improve PSNR by 0.17 to 1.00dB compared to the conventional three reference frames.

In the field of multi-view video coding. multi-view plus depth video is an important data format, but it always suffers from quantization errors, which result in obvious artifacts in consequent virtual view rendering. In this paper, we propose a cluster-based cross-view filtering (CBF) scheme for the enhancement of compressed depth maps. In this scheme, reconstructed depth information are mapped from cross-view, and this information is benefit to the proposed filter. Then in filtering one viewpoint depth map with candidate information that are selected from non-locally current and neighboring viewpoints. Specifically, in our scheme, candidates are clustered in 3D super-pixel wise rather than block wise due to cross relationship among pixels in depth maps. The experimental results show that 2.0074 dB average gain can be obtained by our scheme, which suggests that the scheme outperforms than state-of-the-art and classical filters in filtering the reconstructed depth maps.

this paper presents a HEVC based multi-view video codec. The frames of the multi-view videos are interleaved to generate a monoscopic video sequence. The interleaving is conducted in a way to increase the exploitation of the temporal and inter-views correlations. The MV-HEVC standard codec is configured to work as a single layered codec, which functions as a monoscipic HEVC codec with AVC capabilities, and used to encode interleaved multi-view video frames. The performance of the codec is compared with the anchor standard MV-HEVC codec by coding the three standard multi-view video sequences: "Balloon", "Kendo" and "Newspaper1". Experimental results show the proposed codec out performs the anchor standard MV-HEVC codec in terms of bitrate and PSNR.

Aiming at fully exploiting the temporal and spatial redundancy and answering the "Call for Proposals" for multi-view video coding (MVC) issued by MPEG, a MVC scheme based on vector field estimation and weighted disparity interpolation is presented. By extending the loop constraint to multi-view images for a parallel camera model and proposing the novel "vector field estimation" scheme, the temporal and spatial redundancy is significantly reduced. Also, weighted disparity interpolation is performed to predict adjacent disparity vectors. Experimental results over multi-view image sets imply that the coding efficiency is improved about 0.2-0.5 dB compared with previous coding approaches such as H.264/AVC simulcast and JMVM.
