The advanced 3D video system employs the multi-view video plus depth (MVD) format to support free-viewpoint navigation and comfortable 3D video. Therefore, the prediction structure of the multi-view video coding (MVC) can be used for 3D video coding. The view synthesis prediction method is designed to exploit inter-view correlation using the virtual view generation;hence it is suitable for 3D video coding. In this paper, we propose an efficient framework for 3D video coding using view synthesis prediction to compress multi-view color and depth data simultaneously. We designed the coding procedure of MVD data with four types of view synthesis methods according to the view position. The experimental results showed that the proposed framework improved the coding performance at most 0.9 dB for the multi-view color videos.

Immersive 3D video services demand the transmission of the viewpoints' depth map together with the texture multi-view video to allow arbitrary reconstruction of intermediate viewpoints required for free-view navigation and 3D depth perception. The multi-view video coding (MVC) standard is generally used to encode these auxiliary depth maps and since their estimation process is highly computational intensive, the coding time increases. This paper proposes a technique that exploits the multi-view geometry together with the depth map itself to calculate more accurate initial compensation vectors for the Macro-blocks' estimation. Starting from a more accurate position allows for a smaller search area, reducing the computations required during depth map MVC. Furthermore, the SKIP mode is extended to predict also the disparity vectors from the neighborhood encoded vectors, to omit some of them from transmission. Results demonstrate that these modifications provide an average computational reduction of up-to 87% with a bitrate saving of about 8.3% while encoding an inter-view predicted viewpoint from a depth map multi-view video.

This paper focuses on sharpening boundaries in depth maps for multi-view video coding. Artifacts around boundaries degrade the quality of synthesized images. In order to encounter this problem, after applying the deblocking filter for each frame, we create a binary edge map and find the location of blocks that need to be altered. Subsequently, we apply a boundary sharpening filter which uses pixel frequency, similarity, and closeness as sub-costs. This filter is only applied to blocks which are near edges. Experimental results exhibit much more visual comfort level in synthesized images compared to when JMVC was used.

We consider the problem of coding multi-view video that exhibits mismatches in frames from different views. Such mismatches could be caused by heterogeneous cameras and/or different shooting positions of the cameras. In particular, we consider focus mismatches across views, i.e., such that different portions of a video frame can undergo different blurriness/sharpness changes with respect to the corresponding areas in frames from the other views. We propose an adaptive filtering approach for cross-view prediction in multi-view video coding. The disparity fields are exploited as an estimation of scene depth. An Expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is applied to classify the disparity vectors into groups. Based on the classification result, a video frame is partitioned into regions with different scene-depth levels. Finally, for each scene-depth level, a two-dimensional filter is designed to minimize the average residual energy of cross-view prediction for all blocks in the class. The resulting filters are applied to the reference frames to generate better matches for cross-view prediction. Simulation results show that, when encoding across views, the proposed method achieves up to 0.8dB gain over current H.264 video coding.

multi-view video allows us to experience more realistic feelings with arbitrary view-points and a wide range of scenes, because those are captured by multiple cameras simultaneously but at different positions. Since the amount of data to be processed increases in proportion to the number of cameras, we need to develop efficient coding methods. In this paper, we propose an efficient view interpolation scheme and coding method for multi-view video using the correlation between views. After generating an intermediate view image, we use it at the encoder as an additional reference frame using the proposed 'VIP P-picture' coding method. The proposed view interpolation method improves the generated inter-view image about 1 similar to 4 dB and the 'VIP P-picture' coding method improves coding efficiency about 0.5 dB.

Since the data size of the multi-view video increases proportionally to the number of cameras, it is necessary to compress multi-view video data for efficient storage and transmission. This paper provides an overview of multi-view video coding (MVC) and describes its applications, requirements, and the reference software model for MVC.

The multi-view video coding improves the coding efficiency by utilizing motion-compensated prediction (MCP) and disparity-compensated prediction (DCP). However, the complexity of the inter frame prediction is very high, especially when the rate-distortion optimization is used. This paper presents a fast inter frame prediction algorithm to reduce the complexity. Firstly the prediction type is decided according to reference frames. Then some unuseful search regions in view direction are removed. Finally a fast inter mode decision strategy is proposed based on the relationship between MCP and DCP. Experimental results verify that the proposed algorithm can greatly increase the speed of prediction with negligible loss of coding efficiency.

Efficient exploitation of the temporal and inter-view correlation is critical to multi-view video coding (MVC), and the key to it relies on the design of prediction chain structure according to the various pattern of correlations. In this paper, we propose a novel prediction structure model to design optimal MVC coding schemes along with tradeoff analysis in depth between compression efficiency and prediction structure complexity for certain standard functionalities. Focusing on the representation of the entire set of possible chain structures rather than certain typical ones, the proposed model can given efficient MVC schemes that adaptively vary with the requirements of structure complexity and video source characteristics (the number of views, the degrees of temporal and interview correlations). To handle large scale problem in model optimization, we deploy a hybrid genetic algorithm which yields satisfactory results shown in the simulations.

This paper defines a Quality of Experience (QoE) parameter for multi-view video streaming service over Wireless Broadband Internet, and proposes cross-layer optimization (CLO) algorithm to maximize the QoE. The proposed CLO algorithm interacts with all layers from PHY layer to video layer. Under the time-varying wireless channel condition, it guarantees service continuity to the user by selecting frames to be transmitted. The CLO technique takes inter-view and the temporal significance of the multi-view video frames into consideration when deciding the Transmission Frame Set (TFS) and its Levels of FEC (LOF). Through simulation of the proposed technique, it is shown that the optimal quality of the multiview video can be achieved even during hand-over, using the minimum amount of resources. Visual quality of multi-view video streams is improved by about 15.3 similar to 30.2%, especially tip to 39.1 similar to 65% during the hand-over. Moreover, continuity of the most important view has been increased by 20.1 similar to 39.1% in comparison with conventional method.

multi-view video coding (MVC) is a video coding standard developed by MPEG and VCEG for multi-view video. It showed average PSNR gain of 1.5dB compared with view-independent coding by H.264/AVC. However, because resolutions of multi-view video are getting higher for more realistic 3D effect, high performance video codec is needed. MVC adopted hierarchical B-picture structure and inter-view prediction as core techniques. The hierarchical B-picture structure removes the temporal redundancy, and the inter-view prediction reduces the inter-view redundancy by compensated prediction from the reconstructed neighboring views. Nevertheless, MVC has inherent limitation in coding efficiency, because it is based on H.264/AVC. To overcome the limit, an enhanced video codec for multi-view video based on Key Technology Area (KTA) is proposed. KTA is a high efficiency video codec by video coding Expert Group (VCEG), and it was carried out for coding efficiency beyond H.264/AVC. The KTA software showed better coding gain than H.264/AVC by using additional coding techniques. The techniques and the inter-view prediction are implemented into the proposed codec, which showed high coding gain compared with the view-independent coding result by KTA. The results presents that the inter-view prediction can achieve higher efficiency in a multi-view video codec based on a high performance video codec such as HEVC.
