Digital Twin-Based Network Management for Better QoE in multicast Short Video Streaming

multicast short video streaming can enhance bandwidth utilization by enabling simultaneous video transmission to multiple users over shared wireless channels. The existing network management schemes mainly rely on the sequential buffering principle and general quality of experience (QoE) model, which may deteriorate QoE when users' swipe behaviors exhibit distinct spatiotemporal variation. In this paper, we propose a digital twin (DT)-based network management scheme to enhance QoE. Firstly, user status emulated by the DT is utilized to estimate the transmission capabilities and watching probability distributions of sub-multicast groups (SMGs) for an adaptive segment buffering. The SMGs' buffers are aligned to the unique virtual buffers managed by the DT for a fine-grained buffer update. Then, a multicast QoE model consisting of rebuffering time, video quality, and quality variation is developed, by considering the mutual influence of segment buffering among SMGs. Finally, a joint optimization problem of segment version selection and slot division is formulated to maximize QoE. To efficiently solve the problem, a data-model-driven algorithm is proposed by integrating a convex optimization method and a deep reinforcement learning algorithm. Simulation results based on the real-world dataset demonstrate that the proposed DT-based network management scheme outperforms benchmark schemes in terms of QoE improvement.

The abstraction of tree structured communication channels used in wide-area packet multicasting are generalized by introducing the notions of acyclic graph and two user specifiable attributes, data directionality and transport quality of service. The abstraction is useful for multiservice networks in which applications have diverse transport requirements such as variable data rates and unidirectional data flow. Canonical multicast primitives suitable for a variety of data delivery requirements that allow flexible creation and removal of edges in a graph are presented. Simple and extensible routing algorithms to realize the primitives are also presented.< >

In this paper, we propose some algorithms for finding multicast trees in packet-switched networks such as ATM networks, when there exist constraints on the cell-replication capabilities of the switch nodes. This is formulated as a Steiner tree problem with degree constraints on the nodes in a network, so we will refer to it as the degree-constrained Steiner tree problem (DCSP). Our algorithms are as follows: one is a combined version of two heuristics-"Naive" & "SPH"-, others are based on tree reconfigurations, and the last is based on a mathematical formulation for the DCSP. We experiment on the algorithms in three aspects; number of solved instances, quality of solution, and computational time. Experimental results show that there were few cases unsolved by our algorithms and the QoSs were mostly within 5% of optimum values. Computational times were also tolerable.

A multipoint flow control framework for data traffic traversing both a wired and mobile wireless network is proposed. A Markov modulated fluid model is used for the receiver to capture the dynamics of the wireless links. We discover that the phase difference of the instantaneous throughput of the receivers is a distinctive feature of multicast connections. The objectives of the multicast flow control algorithms are to cope with the receiver phase difference cost-effectively in addition to the general goals such as maximizing throughput and minimizing delay. Three ad hoc algorithms have been studied: listen to slowest request (LSQ), source estimation (SE), and open loop control. A fluid analysis technique is applied to study the effect of receiver phase difference assuming zero delay. The effect of propagation delay is then discussed. Simulation results are presented to verify the analysis for the zero delay case and to compare the performance of the algorithms under non-negligible delay.

This paper proposes two distributed algorithms for the heuristic solution of the Steiner tree problem in networks (SPN). The problem has a practical application in the construction of a minimum cost distribution tree for multicast transmission. multicast transmission represents a necessary lower network service for the wide diffusion of new multimedia network applications. Currently, given the lack of efficient distributed methods, the existing protocols build the multicast distribution tree using some selected central node. The proposed distributed algorithms allow the construction of effective distribution trees using a coordination protocol among the network nodes. The algorithms have been implemented and tested both in simulation and on real networks, and their performance values are presented.

We discuss the multicast communication in the self-routing multistage interconnection network (MIN) for constructing the internal architecture of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches. Many applications of ATM switches require multicast communications in addition to conventional point-to-point communications. This paper presents a novel approach to supporting multicast communication, on the basis of the recursive scheme that recycles a multicast packet one or more times through the network to reach at desired destinations. We also propose cost-effective multicast algorithms providing deadlock-freedom in MIN-based ATM switches. The proposed algorithms require a small and fixed number of recycling passes and a reasonable number of links used. The proposed algorithms can be easily applicable to buffered MIN-based ATM switches.

The challenging network topologies involving space communications motivated the introduction of new network architectures, to face the new constraints of delays and disruptions which make the core principles of the terrestrial Internet inapplicable. In a Delay/Disruption-Tolerant Network architecture (DTN), the nodes only have an accurate knowledge of their close neighborhood, which renders complicated to guaranty the reliability of a route leading to a remote destination. To address these issues, Contact Graph Routing (CGR) calculates the best route at each forwarding node but with a high processing cost. For the multicast case, the spanning tree would be vulnerable to capacity shortages or node breakdowns on remote branches. Besides unplanned disruptions, the delays only induced by the electromagnetic wave propagation bring questioning about the efficiency of a traditional spanning tree management. This paper describes a multicast implementation which intends to address these issues as well as the proposal of a new CGR algorithm showing significant lower algorithmic and software design complexities for both unicast and multicast load. The synergy between these two concepts motivates the presentation of them as a whole and this paper intends to highlight their benefits.

Application-level multicast (ALM) communications replicate packets on host level to deliver them from a single source to multiple clients, so that it can efficiently realize a variety of network applications using moving pictures such as video conferences, distance learning, and video-on-demands. In this paper, we propose the CT+ (compact tree plus) algorithm for finding a better ALM routing tree in terms of delay minimization between hosts. CT+ consists of a tree construction stage from the existing CT algorithm, and a newly added iterative tree improvement stage. Then, we define the extended ALM routing problem and its heuristic algorithm ExCT+, to optimize the effectiveness of the multihome network in ALM communications by selecting multihomed hosts and connections in the ALM routing tree simultaneously. For their evaluations, we construct a network simulation model named MINET (multiple-ISP network simulator), where the topology is composed of multiple ISP backbone networks with IX connections, and the network traffic is generated by following the M/M/1 queuing process. The simulation results using MINET verify the effectiveness of our algorithms.
