multicast can provide efficient information dissemination for a subscribed user group on networks. This paper proposes a set of novel efficient fault-tolerant multicast routing algorithms on mesh networks using optimal shared free routing. The algorithms can select an optimal root for constructing the shared tree so as to minimize the average delay for multicast messages. Tree generation is able to best utilize network resources with fewer links and nodes compared to other approaches. Simulation results indicate that our algorithms are efficient compared with the existing multicast algorithms for balancing the objectives of short average delay and reduced resource utilization.

The paper presents the research results of multicast heuristic algorithms. The paper is an extension of previous publications presented in [14, 15] that discussed small network structures reflecting real Internet topology. It approaches basic methods of generating the Internet topology - Waxman method and the Barabasi-Albert method. A performance study of multicast trees constructed by the algorithms is carried out and analysed, also with the heuristic network generator - Inet.

Since network resource of mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is limited due to the contention-based wireless communication channel at the medium access layer and energy of mobile nodes is constrained due to the energy-limited batteries, the scalability issue is one of main research topics in developing MANET routing algorithms. Therefore, this paper analyzes the message complexities of group shared tree (GST) and source- specific tree (SST) that are implemented in most MANET multicast routing algorithms. Simulation demonstrates that in a wireless ad hoc network where SST and GST are well maintained during the simulation, SST algorithm is able to achieve very competitive performance (i.e. less message complexity) under the multiple packet transmissions, in comparison with GST where no core selection algorithm is adopted.

We propose an efficient algorithm for constructing multicast trees in the Shufflenet. Although the Shufflenet has been shown to be an important network topology for wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) local optical networks, no algorithm has previously been proposed for multicasting in this network. We present a single-pass algorithm that constructs minimum-delay multicast trees, and show how a second pass can be added to reduce tree cost while maintaining very low delay.

This paper presents the performance of topological multicast routing algorithms on mobile wireless ad-hoc networks. Flooding and On-Demand multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP) are simulated and compared with Topological multicast Routing Protocol (ToMuRo). The scenario evaluated considers one multicast transmitter and one, two, and three multicast receivers under various mobility and transmission ranges. The behavior of 250 nodes is evaluated in terms of end to end delay (EED), jitter, packet delivery ratio, and overhead. Results reveal that ToMuRo performs better in terms of packet delivery ratio and overhead, flooding has the best behavior with jitter and ODMRP with respect to EED. In general, ToMuRo has the best performance compared to the other algorithms.

Group communications in high speed networks require the development of efficient multicast algorithms. Finding the optimal multicast routing tree for a subset of a network nodes is an NP-complete problem known as the Steiner Minimal Tree (SMT). Several heuristics were developed to provide an approximate solutions for this problem. The analysis of these heuristics, however, have been limited to specific network topologies. This paper discusses a flexible simulation framework to study the performance of multicasting algorithms in different topologies, including dense and sparse networks. The framework is then used to provide a detailed analysis of the performance of a selected set of path distance heuristics frequently discussed in the literature. The performance of these heuristics as then compared to two new heuristics, namely Normalized Average Distance Heuristic (NADH) and Shared Average Distance Heuristic (SADH). The results show that, on average, NADH outperforms all other heuristics in dense network topologies. The results also show that SADH out-performs the selected set of path distance heuristics for most network topologies.

In spite of the attractive characteristics of Manhattan Street Network (MSN), it is generally thought that providing multicast services over MSN is inherently difficult. We consider here new multicast routing algorithms for MSN. In the proposed algorithms, packets are routed along a dynamic multicast tree which is determined at each routing time. The detailed algorithms and simulation results are presented in this paper. The performance curves obtained show that the proposed algorithms are feasible and practical solutions for the multicast routing over MSN.

For attained high data multicast efficiency for the P2P database system, the paper proposes a set of novel multicast algorithms. In contrast with the current algorithms, the new algorithms firstly divide the group members into different clusters in terms of static delay distance, then find the central node in the clusters, calculate the space weight of every node, search the data quantity of every node, and find the maximal data quantity node. After obtaining the spatial weight vector and the data quantity weight vector, the algorithms try to find a new vector composed by linear combination of the spatial and data weight vectors. Then the algorithms build binary simple equations between them, seek linear modulus and generate a least weight path tree, namely multicast tree. The multicast tree is then constructed by using the new algorithms. Extended simulation results indicate that these new algorithms are more suitable for P2P Database compared with other well-known existing multicast solutions.

To make the best use of network resources across a QoS guaranteed multicast network, it is urgent to add a traffic engineering mechanism to the existing QoS multicast routing protocols. We propose a new approach of integrating QoS multicast routing with TE-oriented admission control to offer a traffic engineering function. Moreover, a TE-oriented admission control algorithm, namely dynamic bandwidth allocation with adaptive constraint (DBA-AC), is suggested to make the best use of resources across the entire multicast network by distributing traffic over different paths. Because this admission control algorithm is nonlinear and unsolvable by an analytical approach, we employ OPNET simulation to study its performance.

Multipoint Video Conferencing (MVC) where multiple participants can be simultaneous sources of video requires low-delay, low packet loss and multipoint interaction synchronization. However, the synchronization issue is ignored by existing application-level multicast schemes and usually, it is addressed by a dedicated synchronizing controller at each peer. The controller needs to implement complicated time-consuming operations to synchronize multiple interactive media streams. Unlike the existing application-level multicast schemes, this paper introduces an idea that the synchronization problem is solved in the process of application-level multicast routing, without using the dedicated synchronizing controller. Furthermore, the low-delay multicast communication is achieved on base of the idea. The contributions of this paper include: *** concept that application-level multicast routing algorithms support multipoint interaction synchronization is defined by us; *** effective lowdelay multicast routing algorithm that supports multipoint interaction synchronization is proposed; *** analysis of our algorithm and the existing similar algorithm is carried out. Finally, simulation experiments demonstrate our algorithm is correct and effective.
