The design and optimization of integrated microsystem require comprehensive consideration of the coupling effects of fabrication process, physical structure parameters, air environments, and interface electronics before the costly and time-consuming microfabrication. In this. paper a multidisciplinary design framework including fabrication factor, structural property, readout circuit and environmental quality factor is proposed to optimize the whole performance of microgyroscope which is one typical integrated microsystem. Genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to maximize sensitivity under the given multidisciplinary optimization model. The optimal,results are verified with FEM modal analysis and compared with the conventional gradient-based optimization method, which demonstrates it is effective for microgyroscope's global design optimization.

Electronics packaging design is a process that requires optimized solutions based on multidisciplinary design trade-offs, which usually have complex relationships among multiple design variables. Required numerical analyses combining electrical, thermal, and thermomechanical, among others, have made the multidisciplinary design and optimization process more challenging because of their time-intensive modeling and computation. In this paper, a state-of-the-art review of recent multidisciplinary design and optimization methodologies in electronics packaging is presented. The reported methodologies are divided into three groups: (1) integrated multidisciplinary computer aided design (CAD) environment, (2) semi-automated design optimization techniques, and (3) automated component placement techniques. In the first group, multidisciplinary design and optimization are carried out using interactive CAD environment software. The electronics packaging designer inputs data and makes decisions, while the CAD software provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary modeling and simulation environment. In the second group, using semi-automated design optimization methodologies, various objectives are optimized simultaneously mainly based on package configurations (dimensions), material properties, and operating conditions. In the third group, optimal placement of heat generating components is performed automatically based on multiple requirements. In recent years, methodologies using (1) detailed numerical analysis models directly connected to optimization algorithms, (2) design of experiments (DoE), and (3) artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been proposed as new trends in this field. These methodologies have led to significant improvement in design optimization capabilities, while they require intensive computational effort. Advantages as well as disadvantages of these methods are discussed.

The design of new Satellite Launch Vehicle （SLV） is of interest, especially when a combination of Solid and Liquid Propulsion is included. Proposed is a conceptual design and optimization technique for multistage Low Earth Orbit （LEO） bound SLV comprising of solid and liquid stages with the use of Genetic Algorithm （GA） as global optimizer. Convergence of GA is improved by introducing initial population based on the design of Experiments （DOE） Technique. Latin Hypercube Sampling （LHS）-DOE is used for its good space filling properties. LHS is a stratified random procedure that provides an efficient way of sampling variables from their multivariate distributions. In SLV design minimum Gross Lift offWeight （GLOW） concept is traditionally being sought. Since the development costs tend to vary as a function of GLOW, this minimum GLOW is considered as a minimum development cost concept. The design approach is meaningful to initial design sizing purpose for its computational efficiency gives a quick insight into the vehicle performance prior to detailed design.

This paper discusses structure and functionalities of a knowledge-based engineering (KBE) application, called multimodel generator (MMG), developed to support aircraft multidisciplinary design, analysis, and optimization. designers can use the MMG as an advanced modelling tool to swiftly generate geometrical models of many and diverse aircraft configurations and variants, by combining and adjusting a limited number of parametric objects, called high-level primitives. Besides capturing the geometric aspects of the design, the MMG also has the capabilities to automate a large part of the lengthy and non-creative pre-processing activities involved in the design verification process. The proposed KBE application has demonstrated to be a valuable solution for some of the critical needs indicated by the multidisciplinary design and optimization community, namely a flexible and robust generative tool to increase the level of automation in aircraft design, including the development of novel configurations;the exploitation of high-fidelity analytical tools already in the early design phase;the management of the design activities across distributed networks of disciplines specialists.

There has been an increasing interest in the application of agile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for various missions. In this paper, we present an introductory assessment of the impact of addressing control feasibility in the multidisciplinary design and optimization (MDO) of such vehicles. Our approach involves incorporating dynamical simulation disciplines into an existing MDO process, originally formulated for tail-sitter vehicles, to achieve more dexterous flights. Specifically, we simulate the cruise phase of an UAV flight by coupling a flight dynamics module with a control system that includes attitude and velocity control as well as a guidance law for 3D navigation. An open loop simulation is also employed to account for the vehicle's ability to hover. We begin our studies with a single design variable optimization problem and demonstrate how the simulation can be used to reduce energy consumption. Final results, obtained optimizing the vehicle and guidance law gains, highlight the effectiveness of this approach in improving the control maneuverability and energy efficiency of an agile UAV.

A quasi-three-dimensional aerodynamic solver is developed for the aerodynamic analysis of wings in a transonic regime that is able to capture the effect of BLS in hybrid laminar flow control (HLFC) application or transition to turbulent flow for natural laminar flow (NLF). The tool provides accurate results, but without the high computational cost of high-fidelity tools. The solver combines the use of an Euler flow solver characterized by an integral boundary-layer method and linear stability analysis using a 2.75D approximation for transition prediction. In particular, a conical transformation is adopted, including the determination of the shock-wave position. The solver is implemented in a multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) framework, including wing weight estimation and aircraft performance analysis. The framework consists of different modules: aerodynamics, structure, suction system analysis, and performance evaluation. Using a genetic algorithm and considering HLFC technology, wing MDO has been performed to find the optimum wing planform and airfoil shape. A backward-swept wing (BSW) aircraft, developed inside the Cluster of Excellence-Sustainable and Energy Efficient Aviation (SE2A) is studied. Novel technologies such as active flow control, limited maximum load factors due to load alleviation, and novel materials allow a fuel weight reduction of 6%.

We present a design optimization framework for an active orbital debris removal mission considering both minimizing Life Cycle Cost and mission time to balance the economic feasibility and efficiency of an active debris removal mission. The general concept of operations consists of spacecraft capable of deorbiting 22 identical high-priority debris from sun -synchronous orbit via continuous low thrust from electrostatic thrusters. This modular subsystem framework is proposed and investigated with a fractional factorial design of experiments approach. The single objective optimization minimizes the Life Cycle Cost of the mission through a heuristic-based genetic algorithm, resulting in a 4.12-year, $354 million mission via 5.34 kW xenon Hall thrusters. We present Pareto fronts generated by a multiobjective weighted sum genetic algorithm to highlight the cost and time objective space for both a nominal and expensive xenon price per kilogram to show how the design space fluctuates with xenon price volatility. Xenon Hall thrusters dominate the Pareto front, with moderate power thrusters minimizing Life Cycle Cost while meeting time constraints. High-power 8 kW xenon Hall thrusters are proven to be in closest proximity to the utopia of the multiobjective design space with a cost of $687 million and mission time of 1 year. High-power krypton Hall thrusters prove to offer a comparable alternative to xenon systems.

Many modern engineering problems are inherently multidisciplinary, requiring input from a variety of subject matter experts. Each discipline may impose its own computational requirements, potentially conflicting with other disciplines. Compounding this, in many fields, experts use specific software that may not interface easily with other disciplines. Therefore, combining multiple fields into multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) may entail significant work on analysis tool interfaces. This paper proposes a standard data and communication interface for MDO applications. Requirements for such a standard are discussed before reviewing relevant technologies. The data conventions and communication protocol for the proposed standard, Philote, are detailed for both explicit and implicit disciplines. Numerical studies were conducted to benchmark performance and quantify latency as well as to demonstrate Philote's ability to operate over large geographical distances. Finally, the wider ramifications of the proposed standard are discussed with a particular focus on heterogeneous and cloud-native computing.

CubeSats are small satellites that offer a low-cost alternative to larger spacecraft for space research missions. Lower costs facilitate development of distributed platforms for a more diverse set of potential missions. Due to the time constraints of typical one-to-three-year design cycles, design decisions for CubeSats are often made based on subjective experience and intuition rather than thorough and systematic design studies. However, distributed platforms require a more robust and efficient approach to making design decisions to fit within short design cycles. Previously, large-scale multidisciplinary design optimization has been applied to the design and operation of a single CubeSat;however, it has not yet been applied to distributed platforms. One example of a distributed platform is a virtual telescope, where the optics and detector of the telescope each reside on a different spacecraft. This paper applies large-scale multidisciplinary design optimization to the vehicle design and trajectory optimization of a mission with two CubeSats flying in formation to form a virtual telescope.

In response to the advancement of lunar exploration programs, demands on transportation to cislunar space is increasing. In such missions, transporting as much payload as possible within a short period of time is a critical issue. However, finding an optimal system design is not easy, because a spacecraft system consists of multiple subsystems that are tightly coupled with each other, where independent techniques and experiences are required. multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO), which simultaneously considers multiple disciplines to search for an optimal design, is one of the promising solutions to the present problem. Many of existing works on MDO deal with aircraft, launch vehicles, and Earth-orbiting satellites. In deep space missions, however, there are an infinite number of possible trajectories with different geometries on which the spacecraft system design strongly depends. This paper proposes a multidisciplinary system design optimization technique for lunar transportation missions with electric propulsion. A lunar transfer trajectory optimization problem is formulated incorporating design parameters of the spacecraft system. A surrogate model that predicts the response of trajectory optimization to the design parameters is developed. Using the surrogate model, an optimal system design with maximal payload mass and minimum time of flight is obtained. Results reveal the structure of the solution space of the spacecraft system design problem, making it possible to find feasible designs and global optimum.
