Towards multimodal visualization of esophageal motility: fusion of manometry, impedance, and videofluoroscopic image sequences

PurposeDysphagia is the inability or difficulty to swallow normally. Standard procedures for diagnosing the exact disease are, among others, X-ray videofluoroscopy, manometry and impedance examinations, usually performed consecutively. In order to gain more insights, ongoing research is aiming to collect these different modalities at the same time, with the goal to present them in a joint visualization. One idea to create a combined view is the projection of the manometry and impedance values onto the right location in the X-ray images. This requires to identify the exact sensor locations in the *** work gives an overview of the challenges associated with the sensor detection task and proposes a robust approach to detect the sensors in X-ray image sequences, ultimately allowing to project the manometry and impedance values onto the right location in the *** developed sensor detection approach is evaluated on a total of 14 sequences from different patients, achieving a F1-score of 86.36%. To demonstrate the robustness of the approach, another study is performed by adding different levels of noise to the images, with the performance of our sensor detection method only slightly decreasing in these scenarios. This robust sensor detection provides the basis to accurately project manometry and impedance values onto the images, allowing to create a multimodal visualization of the swallow process. The resulting visualizations are evaluated qualitatively by domain experts, indicating a great benefit of this proposed fused visualization *** our preprocessing and sensor detection method, we show that the sensor detection task can be successfully approached with high accuracy. This allows to create a novel, multimodal visualization of esophageal motility, helping to provide more insights into swallow disorders of patients.

Background: Reports suggest that adults with post-COVID-19 syndrome or long COVID may be affected by orthostatic intolerance syndromes, with autonomic nervous system dysfunction as a possible causal factor of neurocardiovascular instability (NCVI). Long COVID can also manifest as prolonged fatigue, which may be linked to neuromuscular function impairment (NMFI). The current clinical assessment for NCVI monitors neurocardiovascular performance upon the application of orthostatic stressors such as an active (i.e., self-induced) stand or a passive (tilt table) standing test. Lower limb muscle contractions may be important in orthostatic recovery via the skeletal muscle pump. In this study, adults with long COVID were assessed with a protocol that, in addition to the standard NCVI tests, incorporated simultaneous lower limb muscle monitoring for NMFI assessment. Methods: To conduct such an investigation, a wide range of continuous non-invasive biomedical sensing technologies were employed, including digital artery photoplethysmography for the extraction of cardiovascular signals, near-infrared spectroscopy for the extraction of regional tissue oxygenation in brain and muscle, and electromyography for assessment of timed muscle contractions in the lower limbs. Results: With the proposed methodology described and exemplified in this paper, we were able to collect relevant physiological data for the assessment of neurocardiovascular and neuromuscular functioning. We were also able to integrate signals from a variety of instruments in a synchronized fashion and visualize the interactions between different physiological signals during the combined NCVI/NMFI assessment. Multiple counts of evidence were collected, which can capture the dynamics between skeletal muscle contractions and neurocardiovascular responses. dpVision: Environment for multimodal images

The dpVision (data processing for vision) software framework offers a flexible, open source platform for implementing and testing various data and image processing algorithms. It handles multimodal data across various formats and dimensions, acquired with different imaging techniques like 3D scanning or medical imaging. Support for various object types within a common space enables efficient multimodal image processing and algorithm testing, addressing the limitations of existing solutions. At its core, dpVision is a modular 3D viewer/editor for visualizing and editing imaging data, extendable through plugins to meet specific requirements. One of dpVision's key features is transformational flexibility, allowing nearly unlimited nesting of transformations for advanced scene manipulation. Special emphasis is placed on optimizing performance for large datasets, ensuring both memory and processing efficiency. Application examples presented include scanning and visualizing cultural artifacts, orthodontics, and forensic imaging.

Multi-Objective Optimization for multimodal visualization

Using data visualization techniques can be of significant assistance in exploring multimedia databases. Data visualization is typically addressed as a unimodal learning task, where data are described with only one feature set, or modality. However, using multiple data modalities has been proved to increase the performance of learning methods. In this paper a novel approach for exploiting the multiple available modalities for visualization is proposed, motivated by the field of multi-objective optimization. Initially, each modality is considered separately. A graph of the dissimilarities among the data and the corresponding minimum spanning tree are formed. The suitability of a particular data placement is quantified using multiple cost functions, one for each modality. The utilized cost functions are defined in terms of graph aesthetic measures, computed for the unimodal minimum spanning trees. The cost functions are then used as the multiple objectives of a multi-objective optimization problem. Solving the problem results in a set of Pareto optimal placements, which represent different trade-offs among the various objectives. Experimental evaluation shows that the proposed method outperforms current multimodal visualization methods both in discovering more visualizations and in producing ones which are more aesthetically pleasing and easily perceivable.

PurposeIntracranial aneurysms (IAs) are pathological changes of the intracranial vessel wall, although clinical image data can only show the vessel lumen. Histology can provide wall information but is typically restricted to ex vivo 2D slices where the shape of the tissue is *** developed a visual exploration pipeline for a comprehensive view of an IA. We extract multimodal information (like stain classification and segmentation of histologic images) and combine them via 2D to 3D mapping and virtual inflation of deformed tissue. Histological data, including four stains, micro-CT data and segmented calcifications as well as hemodynamic information like wall shear stress (WSS), are combined with the 3D model of the resected *** were mostly present in the tissue part with increased WSS. In the 3D model, an area of increased wall thickness was identified and correlated to histology, where the Oil red O (ORO) stained images showed a lipid accumulation and the alpha-smooth muscle actin (aSMA) stained images showed a slight loss of muscle *** visual exploration pipeline combines multimodal information about the aneurysm wall to improve the understanding of wall changes and IA development. The user can identify regions and correlate how hemodynamic forces, e.g. WSS, are reflected by histological structures of the vessel wall, wall thickness and calcifications.

A Stratigraphic Information System for the Study of Architectural Heritage Assets' Morphogenesis

The historic built environment is the quintessential embodiment of diachronicity and cultural continuum of societies through time. This richness is inscribed in materiality of heritage assets in the form of stratification that appears as constructive patchwork, bearing the implicit and explicit traces of historical evolution, intelligible through their configuration. Mainly intended for archaeological excavation work, Harris' method, which is based on a set of inherent principles and rules, is consensually adopted for the study of architectural stratification. In this article, we aim to approach buildings stratification from non-destructive perspective in their spatio-morphological and temporal multidimensionality, by proposing an ad-hoc integrated workflow for architectural assets. We first propose a conceptual model, conceiving historical edifices in terms of nested physical and chronological entities. Then, we present an interactive information management system for the integration and multimodal visualization of stratigraphic data, and the analyses performed within the same workspace. Besides the possibility of managing simultaneously geometrical and non-geometrical data, this approach provides both relative and quantified chronology visualization, for an integral understanding of buildings morphogenesis. On a practical level, the system shows to improve insight by providing a retrospection on different morphological past states of buildings, which support reconstitution tasks and conservation planning.

Virtual Periodic Table for Dynamic visualization of Atomic Structure and Hierarchical-Based Interaction: A System to Enhance Student's Learning

The Periodic Table (PT) serves as the fundamental basis of chemistry, often commencing classroom discussions led by chemistry teachers. Mastery of its structure empowers students to anticipate variations in the chemical and physical traits of the elements. This study presents a Hierarchical-Based Interactive Virtual Periodic Table (HBIVPT) aimed at enhancing comprehension and learning outcomes. The HBIVPT offers a hierarchical interface, dynamically illustrating atomic structures, with electrons orbiting the nucleus in designated orbitals. Utilizing multimodal feedback (both visual and auditory), users can improve their knowledge related to different elements of the PT. To evaluate the effectiveness of the HBIVPT, pre- and post-tests were conducted to measure learning improvements. During the evaluation process, forty-five (45) students participated and they were divided into three groups (G1, G2, and G3). G1 used the textbook for chemical elements, G2 used the proposed HBIVPT, and G3 used the Royal Society of Chemistry's Interactive VPT. The students in G2 who used HBIVPT were significantly better as compared to G1 and G3. This is evidenced by the observed average increase in learning: 15% for students using textbooks (G1), 20% for those studying online Periodic Tables (G3), and, notably, 37% for those utilizing HBIVPT (G2). The study results demonstrate that the use of the proposed HBIVPT system significantly improved students' learning and comprehension of the Periodic Table, resulting in enhanced academic performance compared to students using other methods.

3D-XGuide: open-source X-ray navigation guidance system

Purpose With the growing availability and variety of imaging modalities, new methods of intraoperative support have become available for all kinds of interventions. The basic principles of image fusion and image guidance have been widely adopted and are commercialized through a number of platforms. Although multimodal systems have been found to be useful for guiding interventional procedures, they all have their limitations. The integration of more advanced guidance techniques into the product functionality is, however, not easy due to the proprietary solutions of the vendors. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to introduce a software system for image fusion, real-time navigation, and working points documentation during transcatheter interventions performed under X-ray (XR) guidance. Methods An interactive software system for cross-modal registration and image fusion of XR fluoroscopy with CT or MRI-derived anatomic 3D models is implemented using Qt application framework and VTK visualization pipeline. DICOM data can be imported in retrospective mode. Live XR data input is realized by a video capture card application interface. Results The actual software release offers a graphical user interface with basic functionality including data import and handling, calculation of projection geometry and transformations between related coordinate systems, rigid 3D-3D registration, and template matching-based tracking and motion compensation algorithms in 2D and 3D. The link to the actual software release on GitHub including source code and executable is provided to support independent research and development in the field of intervention guidance. Conclusion The introduced system provides a common foundation for the rapid prototyping of new approaches in the field of XR fluoroscopic guidance. As a pure software solution, the developed system is potentially vendor-independent and can be easily extended to be used with the XR systems of different manufacturers.

The most effective treatment of pancreatic cancer (PC) is known as mFOLFIRINOX scheme. However, this regimen has relatively severe toxic effects and are commonly restricted to patients with sound physique, which is poor in drug-selectivity, non-specific causing serious toxicity, greatly limits clinical application. Safer and more effective strategy seamlessly and synchronously is needed as advanced treatments for pancreatic cancer in future. In this report, we exploit a biomimetic nanoparticle-based platform for optimizing mFOL-FIRINOX regimen. By coating pancreatic cancer cell membrane (PCCM) onto the surface of polymeric cores that loaded with mFOLFIRINOX, we prepare PCCM-cloaked nanoparticles, namely CNP@folfirinox, which inherit the antigenic exterior structure and associated functions of PC cells. The resulting CNP@folfirinox displays a core-shell nanostructure, which consisting of polymeric core and cancer cell membrane shell with suitable size and surface charge. Particularly, owing to inheriting the inherent membrane protein expressions profile, CNP@folfirinox exhibits prominent advantages in homologous homing to tumor tissue and deep penetration. It also shows lower side effects compared to extensive mFOLFIRINOX i.v. administration with no appreciable toxicity in other organs outside the tumor in vivo. Meanwhile, CNP@folfirinox is endowed with the "Don't eat me" privilege, hard for the immune system to recognize and less reticuloendothelial system uptake, with prolonged blood circulation, therefore improving delivery efficiency of drug after intravenous administration. Thus, this work reshapes a promising paradigm for more safe and more effective mFOLFIR-INOX strategy for further clinical pancreatic cancer treatment. (c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report and review a visualization system capable of displaying gaze and speech data elicited from pairs of subjects interacting in a discussion. We elicit such conversation data in our first experiment, where two participants are given the task of reaching a consensus about questions involving images. We validate the system in a second experiment where the purpose is to see if a person could determine which question had elicited a certain visualization. The visualization system allows users to explore reasoning behavior and participation during multimodal dialogue interactions.
