Constant power microwave heating (CPMH) based on solid-state generators, a new microwave heating system, shows better repeatability than traditional microwave heating (TMH) powered by magnetron when performing experiments, while its detailed heating patterns and field distribution are still not fully understood. In this study, numerical simulations for model juice (about 1-5 mL) heated by CPMH and TMH systems were carried out to compare the heating performance. The simulation was performed through coupling electromagnetic, thermal and fluid fields, using a laminar flow model to simulate the flow behaviour of the model juice during the heating operation. Both surface temperature distributions and inner point temperatures were investigated for model validation, and the simulated data agreed well with the experimental ones, indicating that the modelling was rational and correct. Results showed that CPMH gave higher heating efficiency and better temperature uniformity, which was verified by determining both inner point temperature and surface temperature distribution. Besides, influences of sample volume and microwave input power on the heating performance of the CPMH system were studied, suggesting that greater sample volume could cause worse temperature uniformity, although a faster temperature increase was observed. When fixing total microwave input energy to 3 kJ, different input powers were found to achieve similar final average volumetric temperatures (50.46 degree celsius-51.22 degree celsius) but significantly different heating uniformity (final coefficient of temperature variance: 0.065-0.115), indicating that smaller microwave input power could contribute to better heating uniformity. It is hoped that this study could provide references to further understand the heating effects of CPMH systems, leading to better design and upgrade for microwave heating systems.

Ti6Al4V alloy has wide range of applications in various fields of engineering such as aerospace, marine and medical due to its high strength to weight ratio and high temperature stability. The demand for Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is driven by its exceptional capability to produce intricate shapes and components that pose challenges in traditional manufacturing techniques. LPBF is an additive manufacturing process which deals with the powder bed fusion of metallic, polymer as well as ceramic powder particulates. The present study investigates the melt pool behaviour and its characteristics with the help of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based numerical model, in case of a single-track analysis. The developed high-fidelity CFD model solves the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy adopting finite volume method. It is found that the convective heat transfer serves as the dominant heat transfer mode while laser beam travels across the powder bed. The simulation findings include temporal evolution of melt pool geometry such as bead height, bead width, cooling rate and solid fraction of the simulated track deposition. The accuracy of the developed coupled DEM-CFD model is confirmed from experimental validation of single-track deposition of Ti6Al4V alloy, which closely matches the numerical prediction of cylindrical bead profile in the longitudinal direction and hemispherical bead profile in the bead cross section. Along with qualitative validation of bead profile, experimental results match reasonably well with the simulation findings in terms of bead width and its height.

Mathematical modelling of zinc-air flow batteries is a crucial tool for the design of prototypes and their scaleup: these are highly strategic tasks in the current development of this technology. A limited amount of efforts has been devoted to this research and, notwithstanding results of high scientific standard, often the emphasis on applications dominates the methodological one. In this work, we have first reassessed and clarified some physicochemical complexities aspects of a standard multiphysics model for a zinc-air flow battery with a porous GDE, a metallic Zn anode and a flowing electrolyte, and extended it to the rechargeable case. The model couples: (i) material conservation for oxygen, zincates and hydroxide with (ii) electrodic electrochemistry in the porous cathode and the compact anode, (iii) charge conservation in the electronically conductive region of the GDE and in the electrolyte, (iv) fluid dynamics for both gas and electrolyte. Then, we have employed the model to: (i) predict polarization curves as a function of operating conditions;(ii) map the limiting current density distribution over the Zn anode during charge, as an estimate of shape change. Some of the functionally relevant computed trends are confirmed by a selection of experimental results.

This research presents a new multiphysics artificial intelligence scheme for predicting fiber orientation distribution (FOD) and mechanical properties of Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRPs). It employs a genetic algorithm for optimization and an artificial neural network for the improved performance of the Reduced Strain Closure (RSC) model. Further, parallel genetic algorithms were used for the optimization of the RSC coefficient values combined with the unique multi-layered artificial neural network with 1-4-8-12-1 topology to predict the mechanical properties. The methodology was tested with high-resolution X-ray micro-computed tomography (mu CT) data and an extensive range of mechanical tests with specimens in 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees orientations. Overall, the optimized model showed a higher prediction accuracy, reducing the mean FOD error prediction by 51.4 %, and improving the R2 values from 0.74 to 0.95. The accuracy of the mechanical property predictions was overall better, with the prediction errors for the elastic modulus decreasing by 71.3 % and tensile strength accuracy increasing by 59 % for all orientations. The parallel processing implemented for the developed framework, the framework exhibited 85 % parallel efficiency and 3.2 x Speedup through GPU used. This integrated approach offers a sound research strategy for determining fiber direction and mechanical property estimation in composite product fabrication.

Purpose This study establishes a multiphysics simulation platform for both conventional and targeted thrombolysis using tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). Based on our computational results, the effects of therapeutic parameters on the dynamics of thrombolysis and the risk of side effects are investigated. Methods The model extends our previously developed one-dimensional(1D) mathematical models for fibrinolysis by incorporating targeted thrombolysis. It consists of two parts: (i) a coupled mathematical model of systemic pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) and local PD in a 1D occluded artery, and (ii) a mechanistic model for a targeted thrombolytic system via activated platelet-targeted tPA-loaded nanovesicles (tPA-NV), with model parameters derived from our in vitro experiments. A total of 16 therapeutic scenarios are simulated by varying the clot location and composition as well as the dosing regimen with free tPA or tPA-NV. Results Our simulation results indicate that tPA-NV offers several advantages over free tPA for thrombolysis. It reduces systemic exposure of tPA, thereby minimising the risk of bleeding complications. Simulations with different tPA-NV doses reveal that tPA-NV at 10% of the recommended dose can be as effective as the standard regimen with the full recommended dose of free tPA, demonstrating the potential of our tPA-NV as a new thrombolytic strategy with a reduced tPA dose. Moreover, faster recanalisation can be achieved with tPA-NV, especially for platelet-rich(or fibrin-poor) clots. Conclusions Our simulation platform for thrombolysis with well-tuned model parameters can be used to evaluate and optimise treatment regimens of existing and new thrombolytic therapies via benefit/risk assessment under various therapeutic scenarios.

Synchrotron X-ray operando study and multiphysics modelling of the solidification dynamics of intermetallic phases under electromagnetic pulses

In this paper, we used synchrotron X-ray radiography and tomography to study systematically and in operando conditions the growth dynamics of the primary Al3Ni intermetallic phases in an Al-15wt%Ni alloy in the solidification process with magnetic pulses of up to 1.5 T. The real-time observations clearly revealed the growth dynamics of the intermetallics in time scale from millisecond to minutes, including phase growth instability, side branching, fragmentation and orientation alignment under different magnetic pulse fluxes. A multiphysics numerical model was also developed to calculate the alternating and cyclic Lorentz forces and stresses acting on the Al3Ni phases and the nearby melt due to the applied pulses. Combining the results of the operando experiments and modelling, for the first time, the differential forces between the growing Al3Ni phases and the nearby melt were quantified. The forces can create slip dislocations at the growing crystal front which can further develop into nm and mu m crystal steps for initiating phase branching. Furthermore, the magnitudes of the shear stresses are strongly related to the size, morphological and geometric features of the growing Al3Ni phases. Dependent on the magnitude of the shear stresses, phase fragmentation could occur in a single pulse period or in multiple pulse periods via fatigue mechanism. This systematic research work elucidate some of the long-time debated hypotheses concerning intermetallic phases growth instability and phase fragmentation in pulse magnetic fields. The research establishes a robust theoretical framework for quantitative understanding of the intermetallic phase growth dynamics in solidification under pulse magnetic fields.

Structural battery composites are designed to bear loads and store electrical energy simultaneously. One type consists of multifunctional materials such as carbon fibres reinforced in a structural electrolyte matrix. multiphysics models are being developed to predict and evaluate the coupled performance of these batteries, drawing inspiration from conventional battery models. However, structural battery composites are expected to experience more significant deformation during operation than is induced by electrochemical cycling alone. This review summarizes the current understanding of multiphysics modelling of structural battery composites, highlights recent progress in these coupled models, and discusses opportunities and possible directions for future development.

This paper presents a multiphysics modelling and real-time simulation of PMSMs. The study includes electromagnetic modelling, thermal modelling, and finally, a real-time reduced-order model simulation is developed. The resulting model is capable of online estimation of machine parameters and temperature. The results have been compared with dedicated software and a good agreement has been noticed.

High temperature superconducting homopolar inductor machine (HTS-HIM) is concerned and studied for electric aircraft because of its high power density, high efficiency, and high power-to-weight ratio. In an HTS-HIM, the high temperature superconducting magnets carrying DC currents under alternating background magnetic fields work as excitation magnets. Under extreme electromagnetic conditions, the voltage, loss, and temperature of the HTS magnets will increase because of the dynamic resistance effect. To predict the behaviors of the HTS magnet, it is necessary to analyze its electromagnetic-thermal characteristics by using a multiphysics model. This paper establishes a 2D axisymmetric multilayer multiphysics HTS magnet model based on the Hformulation. By using this multilayer multiphysics model, the electromagnetic-thermal characteristics of each turn can be analyzed. Meanwhile, this model can not only analyze the total loss and loss components of each layer under various operating conditions but also predict the temperature and quench behaviors of each part. The result shows that the loss components of the REBCO layer have distinct temperature dependence. When considering the thermal field effect, the magnetization loss of the REBCO layer reduces by 75% and the transport loss of the REBCO layer increases by 45% under high direct currents and high AC magnetic fields. Meanwhile, the temperature of the external turn is higher than the internal turn, and the external turn is at risk of quench in the operating process when the direct currents and AC magnetic fields are high. The multilayer multiphysics model is a powerful tool for designing, analyzing, and optimizing the HTS magnets in HTS-HIMs, and this multiphysics modelling technique can be utilized in modelling and simulating HTS REBCO magnets in various applications.

1D multiphysics modelling of the PEM water electrolysis anode is benefit for detailed investigation of the joint effects of electrochemical performance and multicomponent multiphase flow transport phenomena. Such a model can be effectively applied for the water electrolysis system design and optimization. Recently, the importance of hydraulic effects and dynamic behavior gradually attracts much focus on this specific issue. In this article, a novel 1D dynamic model has been developed for interpreting the multi-physics processes in the PEM water electrolysis anode, which considers the complex fluid dynamics and electrochemistry in the PEM water electrolyzer (PEMWE) components - PEM, the anode catalyst layer and the porous transport layer. As a result, the hydraulic and electrochemical properties of three components were studied for investigation of their effects on the characterization of electrochemical per-formance and mass transport processes. It concludes that for the improvement of electrolytic perfor-mance, the porous transport layer is suggested to be designed for high permeability and low contact angle. The catalyst layer needs to be optimized for its three-phase interface fraction with high coating mass in the membrane assembly. (c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
