Offering a real time video transmission service, using mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and granting a specific Quality of Service (QoS) is a hard challenge. In fact, the network topology is extremely unstable and its variability causes the loss of transmitted information. However, powerful mechanisms against channel failures can be incorporated to avoid the system breakdown. In this paper, we evaluate the effect of multiple description coding (MDC) technique for improving video quality in a multimedia content distribution system. The architecture proposed is a hybrid fixed and wireless ad hoc network where nodes can move freely. Due to multipoint to point nature of this system, multidescription can be combined with multipath transmission to increase its efficiency and, at last, the Quality of Experience (QoE) of the final receiver. The simulation lets us compare the quality of the video streaming paying attention to quality parameters (PSNR, packet delivery ratio, decodable frame rate and interruptions). Results show that MDC improves video quality in high mobility scenarios.

This paper presents a formal study on the optimal layer bandwidth allocation for non-cumulative layered video or multiple description coding based broadcasting over broadband wireless networks. We first formulate the optimal bandwidth allocation problem with the objective of maximizing goodput, the total bandwidth delivered to all the receivers in a session. We show that this problem, in its most general form, is computationally intractable. We then propose three practically effective heuristic algorithms for wireless broadcast environments, namely, Merge-Based Allocation (MBA), Multi-Granular Allocation (MGA), and Cumulative Layering based Allocation (CLA). Numerical results show that all three heuristic algorithms significantly outperform non-adaptive allocation algorithms.

In this paper, we revisit the multiple description coding problem with one semi-deterministic distortion measure, which we term as the Fu-Yeung problem (Fu and Yeung, 2002). We present the properties of optimal test channels for the minimum sum-rate function, a non-asymptotic converse bound and second-order asymptotics for discrete memoryless sources. Since the successive refinement problem is a special case of the Fu-Yeung problem, as a by-product, we obtain a non-asymptotic converse bound for the successive refinement problem, which turns out to be a strict generalization of the non-asymptotic converse bound for successively refinable sources (Zhou, Tan and Motani, 2017).

This paper presents a video coding method that improves error resilient functionality of H.264 with good coding efficiency. The method is based on PD (polyphase downsampling) multiple description coding. The only changes to H.264 are inserting PD before the DCT process and having new data partitioning NAL units. A coded slice is sent on 3 data partitioning NAL units. A header NAL unit contains motion vectors and block modes. Each of the other two NAL units contains a description generated by PD multiple description coding. The experimental results on all 9 of the test sequences of JVT SVC show that the proposed method gives 0.5 to 5 dB enhancement over the existing H.264 FMO checker board mode with motion vector based error-concealment.

The demand for efficient scalable video codecs has constantly been on the rise in response to the increase in the variety of services and QoS requirements in multimedia networks. Existing standardization efforts, such as the Scalable Video coding extension of the H.264/AVC standard, do not offer efficient error resilient protection for all the different levels of video enhancement. We developed a multipledescription scalable video coding technique that offers complementary and independently decodable descriptions, offering acceptable video quality even if only one of them is successfully received. Performance evaluations show that our scheme delivers an average improvement of 5 dB for single channel decoding and an improvement of 2 dB on average for packet loss simulations when compared with the UXP protected SD-SVC and the multiple-description motion compensated temporal filtering (MD-MCTF) scheme at comparable redundancy levels.

multipledescription scalable coding based on T+2D wavelet decomposition structure is highly flexible for peer-to-peer (P2P) video streaming. Finding the optimal truncation point of each code block (CB) within each description is an NP-hard problem. To implement an efficient low-complexity solution, we propose a simple clustering algorithm for partitioning the CBs into a limited number of clusters, such that one can find the optimal cluster-level redundancy-rate assignment matrix using a low-complexity full search. This approach improves the decoding quality compared to the co-echelon frameworks [1] [6] in which a non-optimal rate assignment matrix is used. In addition, the proposed clustering approach may be analytically represented by closed-form relations for low-complexity computation of optimal encoding parameters. The simulation results demonstrate that the adaptive proposed framework outperforms the approaches in [1] by (0.25 similar to 1dB), the scheme of [6] by (1.3 similar to 1.6dB), and the non-adaptive multiple description coding by (2.3 similar to 4.3dB). Furthermore, the proposed clustering approach requires %52-%88 less computations compared to the framework in [1].

In this paper, we propose a scheme for the robust transmission of video in error prone environments using multiple description coding (MDC) based on the scalable video coding extension (SVC) of H.264/AVC. Due to the layer structure of SVC, a base layer is referenced by one or more enhancement layers. The proposed method produces multipledescription base layers to achieve robust video communication over unreliable channels with reasonable redundancy. Two base layers are generated using residual data downsampling, which makes it possible that the two base layers have the same motion vectors. The proposed method combines the advantages of SVC and MDC. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the temporal splitting based multipledescription scalable coding method in terms of PSNR by 0.3 dB.

In this paper, a new robust multipledescription image coding method with a modified interleaving sampling and a modified interpolation method using block compressed sensing is proposed. In the encoding process, the original image is decomposed into several sub-images by using the modified interleaving sampling and the redundant bits are added to enhance the reconstruction accuracy. For each sub-image the description is obtained in the block compressed sensing (BCS). In the decoding process, the signal is reconstructed from the sparse measurements by using the optimization algorithm. Our analysis and simulation results showed that the proposed method is a balanced multiple description coding scheme with higher accuracy of reconstruction and higher efficiency of coding.

In this paper, we first propose a multipledescription mesh-based motion coding method, which generates two descriptions for mesh-based motion by first subsampling the nodes of a right-angled triangular mesh and then dividing them into two groups. Motion vectors associated with the mesh nodes in each group form the mesh-based motion field for each description, and are transmitted over distinct network channels. With the nodes in each group, two other regular triangular meshes besides the original one can be constructed, and three different prediction images can be reconstructed according to descriptions available. The proposed multipledescription mesh-based motion coding method is then combined with the pairwise correlating transform proposed in [4], and a new and complete multipledescription video coding scheme is proposed. Further measures are taken to reduce the mismatch between the encoder and the decoder that occurs when the decoder receives only one of the two descriptions and has to use a different reference frame for motion compensation other than the encoder does. Simulations were carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, and the results show, compared to the MDTC video coding method in [6], the proposed scheme has achieved lower redundancy rate distortion;in the scenario of packet loss, the proposed scheme outperforms the MDTC video coding method.

The primary challenge to perform mobile sign language communication over cellular network is overcoming the data loss. We proposed a new multipledescriptions coding (MDC) for protecting regions of interest (ROI) in sign language video by combining the advantages of MDC and ROI coding. The set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm is used to generate MDC streams, and these streams are divided into ROI streams and background (BG) streams. For protection of ROI, our method assigns different redundant trees to the two kinds streams, the fully coded trees are assigned as the redundant trees of the ROI streams, the partially coded trees are assigned as the redundant trees of the BG streams. Experiment results show that our method can further increase the reconstruction quality of the ROI over noisy channels compared with other regions of interest multiple description coding methods.
