Promoter polymorphisms in the chitinase 3-like 1 gene influence the serum concentration of YKL-40 in Danish patients with rheumatoid arthritis and in healthy subjects

Introduction: The present study investigates the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the chitinase 3-like 1 (CHI3L1) gene and serum concentrations of YKL-40 in Danish patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and healthy controls as well as the association with RA in the Danish population. The CHI3L1 gene is located on chromosome 1q32.1 and encodes the YKL-40 glycoprotein. YKL-40 concentrations are elevated in the serum of patients with RA compared to healthy subjects, and YKL-40 has been suggested to be an auto-antigen and may play a role in development of RA and in inflammation. Methods: Eight SNPs in the CHI3L1 gene and promotor were genotyped in 308 patients with RA and 605 controls (healthy blood donors) using TaqMan allele discrimination assays. Serum concentrations of YKL-40 were determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: We found significant association between the serum concentrations of YKL-40 and polymorphism in the CHI3L1 gene among both patients with RA and controls. The g.-131(C > G) polymorphism (rs4950928) was most strongly associated with age adjusted serum concentrations of YKL-40 in patients with RA (P < 2.4e-8) and controls (P < 2.2e-16). No significant allelic-or genotypic association with RA was found in this Danish cohort. Conclusions: We suggest that the g.-131(C > G) promoter polymorphism has a substantial impact on serum concentrations of YKL-40 in patients with RA and healthy subjects. However, the polymorphism does not seem to confer risk to RA itself. The effect of CHI3L1 polymorphism on clinical outcome or the response to treatment in patients with RA remains to be investigated.

Regional Temperature Forecast for the Next Day in Hong Kong

For a century or so, the Hong Kong Observatory （HKO） has been providing temperature forecast for the whole of Hong Kong with the HKO Headquarters as the reference location. In recent decades, due to spreading of population from the main urban center to satellite towns, there is an increasing demand for regional temperature forecasts. To support such provision, the HKO has developed a regression model to provide objective guidance to forecasters in formulating forecasts of maximum and minimum temperatures for the next day at various locations in Hong Kong. In this paper, the regression model is presented, together with the assessment of its performance. Based on the verification of one year of forecasts, it is found that the root mean square errors （RMSEs） of maximum （minimum） temperature forecasts are from about 1.3 to 2.1 （1.1 to 1.4） degrees, respectively. The regression model is shown to have generally out-performed the operational regional spectral model then operated by HKO. Regional temperature forecast methods of other meteorological or research centers are also surveyed. Equipped with the regression model, the HKO has launched an online regional temperature forecast service for the next day in Hong Kong since March 2008.

Since Thermal error in precision CNC machine tools cannot be ignored, it is essential to construct a simple and effective thermal error compensation mathematical model. In this paper, three modeling methods are introduced in detail. The first is multiple linear regression model;the second is congruence model, which combines multiple linear regression model with AR model of its residual error;and the third is autoregressive distributed lag model(ADL), which is compared and analyzed. multiple linear regression analysis is used most commonly in thermal error compensation, since it is a simple and quick modeling method. But thermal error is nonlinear and interactive, so it is difficult to model a precise least squares model of thermal error. The congruence model and autoregressive distributed lag model belong to time series analysis method which has the advantage of establishing a precise mathematical model. The distinctions between the two models are that: the congruence model divides the parameter into two parts to estimate them respectively, but autoregressive distributed lag model estimates parameter uniformly, so congruence model is less accurate than autoregressive distributed lag model in modeling. This paper, based upon an actual example, concludes that autoregressive distributed lag model for thermal error of precision CNC machine tools is a good way to improve modeling accuracy.

The thermal error compensation of CNC machine tool is of great value to improving the accuracy, and the modeling method is a proximate factor of thermal error compensation and its robustness. Currently, internationally adopted modeling methods include multiple linear regression, neural network method etc. And the most commonly used modeling method is multiple linear regression, what is simple and quick. But forecast accuracy which needs to be improved limits to the application of thermal error modeling of precision CNC machine. When we model a time series modeling, we study variables and its extrapolate mechanism to forecast changes of time series, give heavier weight to the data near by the prediction, increase short-term parameters' impact of model, so as to achieve improving forecasting precision of model. And time series models have been used widely in economic, sociology and medicine, but few in thermal error modeling of CNC machine. Adopt autoregressive distributed lag model of time series analysis, and contract of results among time series model, multiple linear regression model, demonstrate that forecast accuracy can be improved using time series model, and time series analysis has a bright future.

The genomic features that affect the lengths of 5′ untranslated regions in multicellular eukaryotes

Background: The lengths of 5'UTRs of multicellular eukaryotes have been suggested to be subject to stochastic changes, with upstream start codons (uAUGs) as the major constraint to suppress 5'UTR elongation. However, this stochastic model cannot fully explain the variations in 5'UTR length. We hypothesize that the selection pressure on a combination of genomic features is also important for 5'UTR evolution. The ignorance of these features may have limited the explanatory power of the stochastic model. Furthermore, different selective constraints between vertebrates and invertebrates may lead to differences in the determinants of 5'UTR length, which have not been systematically analyzed. Methods: Here we use a multiple linear regression model to delineate the correlation between 5'UTR length and the combination of a series of genomic features (G+C content, observed-to-expected (OE) ratios of uAUGs, upstream stop codons (uSTOPs), methylation-related CG/UG dinucleotides, and mRNA-destabilizing UU/UA dinucleotides) in six vertebrates (human, mouse, rat, chicken, African clawed frog, and zebrafish) and four invertebrates (fruit fly, mosquito, sea squirt, and nematode). The relative contributions of each feature to the variation of 5'UTR length were also evaluated. Results: We found that 14%similar to 33% of the 5'UTR length variations can be explained by a linear combination of the analyzed genomic features. The most important genomic features are the OE ratios of uSTOPs and G+C content. The surprisingly large weightings of uSTOPs highlight the importance of selection on upstream open reading frames (which include both uAUGs and uSTOPs), rather than on uAUGs per se. Furthermore, G+C content is the most important determinants for most invertebrates, but for vertebrates its effect is second to uSTOPs. We also found that shorter 5'UTRs are affected more by the stochastic process, whereas longer 5'UTRs are affected more by selection pressure on genomic features. Conclusions:

Application of multiple linear regression and artificial neural network algorithms to predict the total hand value of summer knitted T-shirts

A mathematical method, Weighted Euclidean Distance, has been applied for indirect determination of total hand value from the KES system parameters obtained for various summer knitted T-shirts. In this method, the weight of multivariable related to fabric hand has been determined from objective measurements without any resource to subjective evaluation. Artificial neural network with back propagation learning algorithm and multiple linear regression algorithm have been used to construct predictive models for the determination of total hand value of summer knitted T-shirts based on fabric mechanical properties measured on the KES system of each sample as input and total hand value predicted by mathematical model as desired output. The predictive power of optimized models is calculated and compared. The results reveal that the artificial neural network model is very effective for predicting the total hand value and has the better performance as compared to multiple linear regression model.

Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) models are proposed as an alternative approach of evaporation estimation for Yuvacik Dam. This study has three objectives: (1) to develop ANFIS models to estimate daily pan evaporation from measured meteorological data;(2) to compare the ANFIS model to the multiple linear regression (MLR) model;and (3) to evaluate the potential of ANFIS model. Various combinations of daily meteorological data, namely air temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and wind speed, are used as inputs to the ANFIS so as to evaluate the degree of effect of each of these variables on daily pan evaporation. The results of the ANFIS model are compared with MLR model. Mean square error, average absolute relative error and coefficient of determination statistics are used as comparison criteria for the evaluation of the model performances. The ANFIS technique whose inputs are solar radiation, air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed, gives mean square errors of 0.181 mm, average absolute relative errors of 9.590% mm, and determination coefficient of 0.958 for Yuvacik Dam station, respectively. Based on the comparisons, it was found that the ANFIS technique could be employed successfully in modelling evaporation process from the available climatic data. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Augmented plasma microparticles during acute Plasmodium vivax infection

Background: In the last few years, the study of microparticles (MPs) - submicron vesicles released from cells upon activation or apoptosis - has gained growing interest in the field of inflammation and in infectious diseases. Their role in the human malaria parasite Plasmodium vivax remains unexplored. Because acute vivax malaria has been related to pro-inflammatory responses, the main hypothesis investigated in this study was that Plasmodium vivax infection is associated with elevated levels of circulating MPs, which may play a role during acute disease in non-immune patients. Methods: Plasma MPs were analysed among thirty-seven uncomplicated P. vivax infections from an area of unstable malaria transmission in the Brazilian Amazon. The MP phenotype was analysed by flow cytometry using the classical MP marker, annexin, and fluorochrome-labeled monoclonal antibodies against specific cell surface markers. The frequencies of plasma MPs in P. vivax patients (n = 37) were further compared to malaria-unexposed controls (n = 15) and ovarian carcinoma patients (n = 12), a known MPs-inducing disease non-related to malaria. Results: The frequencies of plasma circulating MPs were markedly increased in P. vivax patients, as compared to healthy age-matched malaria-unexposed controls. Although platelets, erythrocytes and leukocytes were the main cellular sources of MPs during vivax malaria, platelet derived-MPs (PMPs) increased in a linear fashion with the presence of fever at the time of blood collection (beta = 0.06, p < 0.0001) and length of acute symptoms (beta = 0.36, p < 0.0001). Finally, the results suggest that plasma levels of PMPs diminish as patient experience more episodes of clinical malaria (beta = 0.07, p < 0.003). Conclusions: Abundant circulating MPs are present during acute P. vivax infection, and platelet derived-MPs may play a role on the acute inflammatory symptoms of malaria vivax.

Growth of journals, articles and authors in malaria research

In the present study we have tried to trace the growth of malaria research at Global Level and the distribution of articles in various journals for the period 1955-2005. The data have been extracted from a database, which has been developed in-house from MEDLINE, SCI, TDB, Ovid Heath Information and Indian Science Abstracts. Study indicates that the exponential model fits the data on journals, articles and authors. The R(2) value for the trend for journals, articles, and authors are 0.9502, 0.9475, and 0.9651, respectively. The growth rates for journals, articles and authors are 5.31%, 7.38%, and 10.06%, respectively. The linear multiple regression equation that Articles =-39.2771 + 3.61719*journals + 0.085882*Authors (R(2) = 99.16%) is most meaningful and it may be used to estimate the articles for given numbers of journals and authors.
