Φ₁-concavity and fuzzy multiple objective decision making

Concave properties play a dominate role in solving both classic and fuzzy optimization problems. However, since fuzzy problems are generally represented by sets, not crisp numbers, various aggregation schemes are needed to manipulate and to combine the different elements in a fuzzy optimization problem. Based on these different aggregations, various concavity properties can be formulated and explored. In this paper, the intersection aggregation and the convex combination aggregation are explored based on the Supp-Phi(1)-concave fuzzy Sets. First, the concept of Phi(1)-convexity, which covers a wider class of sets and functions, is extended to fuzzy sets. Supp-Phi(1)-concave and Supp-Phi(1)-quasiconcave fuzzy sets are then introduced;and some useful aggregation and composition rules are developed. Based on these aggregation and composition rules and the generalized concave properties, fuzzy multiple objective decision making problems are formulated and the conditions to ensure local-global maximum property are discussed. An interactive solution approach for multiple objective supplier selection problem with fuzzy parameters

Increased competition and the globalization of markets have made the purchasing function an increasingly vital activity in supply chain management. The most crucial decision in purchasing is the selection of appropriate suppliers which reduce purchasing costs, decrease production lead time, increase customer satisfaction and strengthen corporate competitiveness. This decision is complicated when buyers face multiple suppliers, multiple conflicting criteria and imprecise parameters. In this study a multiple sourcing supplier selection problem is considered as a multiple objective linear programming problem with fuzzy demand level and/or fuzzy aspiration levels of objectives. Three objective functions are minimizing the total monetary costs, maximizing the total quality and maximizing the service level of purchased items respectively. In order to solve the problem, a novel interactive solution procedure which integrates three well-known fuzzy mathematical models is presented. The proposed approach handles three different scenarios related with mainly the sources of fuzziness and can be efficiently used to obtain non-dominated solutions. Interactivity gives the Decision Maker opportunity to incorporate his/her preferences during the iterations of the optimization process. A numerical example is given to illustrate how the approach is utilized.

This article presents the new systems engineering optimization model, OptiWaste, which incorporates a life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology and captures important characteristics of waste management systems. As part of the optimization, the model identifies the most attractive waste management options. The model renders it possible to apply different optimization objectives such as minimizing costs or greenhouse gas emissions or to prioritize several objectives given different weights. A simple illustrative case is analysed, covering alternative treatments of one tonne of residual household waste: incineration of the full amount or sorting out organic waste for biogas production for either combined heat and power generation or as fuel in vehicles. The case study illustrates that the optimal solution depends on the objective and assumptions regarding the background system - illustrated with different assumptions regarding displaced electricity production. The article shows that it is feasible to combine LCA methodology with optimization. Furthermore, it highlights the need for including the integrated waste and energy system into the model. Simultaneously targeting for the minimum water requirement and the maximum production in a batch process

This work proposes a multiple objective formulation to simultaneously target the minimization of fresh water requirement and the maximization of production in a batch process. The proposed mixed integer linear programming formulation includes scheduling (such as allocation constraints, time constraints, capacity constraints, mass balances, etc.) as well as fresh water minimization constraints (such as concentration, flow requirements, etc.) and illustrated through an example. The trade-offs between the production and the fresh water requirement is captured through the Pareto optimal front. The Pareto optimal front consists of discrete points and facilitates decision maker to select an appropriate operating point based on other process constraints. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that due to non-convexity of the model, weighted objective method fails to identify all the Pareto optimal points. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this article, efficient solutions of multiple objective optimization problems with trade-offs, bounded by prespecified lower and upper bounds, are investigated. It is shown that one of the existing techniques to obtain these solutions does not work correctly. Furthermore, a new approach is given to approximate the set of such solutions. In addition to theoretical discussions, some clarifying examples are given.

Preincavity and fuzzy decision making

Since almost all practical problems are fuzzy and approximate, fuzzy decision making becomes one of the most important practical approaches. However, the resulting problems are frequently complicated and difficult to solve. One effective way to overcome these difficulties is to explore the concavity or generalized concavity properties of the resulting problems. In this paper, we introduce and study the concept of supp-preincave and supp-prequasiincave fuzzy sets. We give characterizations for a supp-preincave fuzzy set in terms of its fuzzy hypograph, and a supp-prequasiincave fuzzy set in terms of its level sets. Furthermore, we also prove that any local maximizer of a supp-preincave fuzzy set is also a global maximizer, and that any strictly local maximizer of a supp-prequasiincave fuzzy set is also a global maximizer. Finally, some aggregation rules for supp-preincave and supp-prequasiincave fuzzy sets are given and some applications to fuzzy decision making are discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Optimal design of a bus route with short-turn services

In today's world, the transit load of urban areas has increased tremendously, so the costs related to the operations has increased and ensuring a certain level of service has become challenging. Bus service is one of the most widely used modes of public transportation. A critical issue of bus services is to manage the limited capacity of buses efficiently. To cope with the limited capacity efficiently, short-turn service patterns are commonly used as a bus route design strategy. In this study, we propose a modelling approach to design a bus route with short-turn service patterns accounting for various objectives of the operator and passengers, such as minimizing the capacity surplus, capacity shortage and passenger time related costs. We present a real-life case study showing the significant benefits of short-turn services. The results show that the pareto-frontier curves are similar for different time periods (i.e. low- and high-demand periods). Most importantly, the trade-off between capacity surplus and shortage is not linear in case of a short-turn service strategy. Significant gains can be achieved in capacity shortage by decrementing the capacity surplus slightly. Additionally, capacity shortage can be improved much easier compared to passenger time costs when a short-turn service pattern strategy is used. We also show that using optimal route design with a short-turn strategy yields a capacity surplus improvement of 60-70% in return for only 1% decrement of capacity shortage compared to the current practice without short-turns in a case study.

Multi-objective route planning approach for timely searching tasks of a supervised robot

To performance efficient searching for an operator-supervised mobile robot, a multiple objectives route planning approach is proposed considering timeliness and path cost. An improved fitness function for route planning is proposed based on the multi-objective genetic algorithm （MOGA） for multiple objectives traveling salesman problem （MOTSP）. Then, the path between two route nodes is generated based on the heuristic path planning method A ＊. A simplified timeliness function for route nodes is proposed to represent the timeliness of each node. Based on the proposed timeliness function, experiments are conducted using the proposed two-stage planning method. The experimental results show that the proposed MOGA with improved fitness function can perform the searching function well when the timeliness of the searching task needs to be taken into consideration.

In this paper, we develop a hybrid bi-objective credibility-based fuzzy mathematical programming model for portfolio selection under fuzzy environment. To deal with imprecise parameters, we use a hybrid credibility-based approach that combines the expected value and chance constrained programming techniques. The model simultaneously maximizes the portfolio return and minimizes the portfolio risk. We also consider an additional important criterion, namely, portfolio liquidity as a constraint in the model to make it better suited for practical applications. The proposed fuzzy optimization model is solved using a two-phase approach. An empirical study is included to demonstrate applicability of the proposed model and the solution approach in real-world applications of portfolio selection.

A multiple objective methodology for sugarcane harvest management with varying maturation periods

This paper addresses the management of a sugarcane harvest over a multi-year planning period. A methodology to assist the harvest planning of the sugarcane is proposed in order to improve the production of POL (a measure of the amount of sucrose contained in a sugar solution) and the quality of the raw material, considering the constraints imposed by the mill such as the demand per period. An extended goal programming model is proposed for optimizing the harvest plan of the sugarcane so the harvesting point is as close as possible to the ideal, considering the constrained nature of the problem. A genetic algorithm (GA) is developed to tackle the problem in order to solve realistically large problems within an appropriate computational time. A comparative analysis between the GA and an exact method for small instances is also given in order to validate the performance of the developed model and methods. Computational results for medium and large farm instances using GA are also presented in order to demonstrate the capability of the developed method. The computational results illustrate the trade-off between satisfying the conflicting goals of harvesting as closely as possible to the ideal and making optimum use of harvesting equipment with a minimum of movement between farms. They also demonstrate that, whilst harvesting plans for small scale farms can be generated by the exact method, a meta-heuristic GA method is currently required in order to devise plans for medium and large farms.
