This paper proposes a new format-compliant perceptual encryption scheme based on the multiple description coding (MDC). The proposed technique exploits the scalable property of MDC which results in multiple encrypted format-compliance video streams. An unbalanced MDC was specially designed to serve the purpose of perceptual encryption in such a way that it provides the control over quality differences and number of achievable qualities. In general, the perceived quality is directly proportional to the number of video descriptions that can be correctly decrypted. In order to preserve format compliant property of the encoded video streams, the proposed scheme was designed based on a pre- and post-processing multipledescription video coding method and an encryption process at bit stream level. Hence, no alterations are required for both coding and encryption processes. Even though the proposed framework is format independent, this paper focuses on the H.2641AVC video coding standard. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can successfully integrate encryption and a multiple description coding technique while preserving other multipledescription video coding characteristics such as scalability and robustness.

We consider the problem of distributing video data from a server to a population of interested clients. Deploying overlay network with application-layer multicast, we propose it FEC-based scalable multiple description coding (SMDC) scheme to arrive at the solution to the problem. Without the performance penalty on each receiver, our SMDC can achieve optimal performance of each client with different net-work conditions as simply as additional assembling and truncating operations. In the mean time, a R-D allocation algorithm is presented to decide the rates of the source and channel. Simulation shows that our SMDC have better quality for heterogeneous receivers than traditional scheme.

This paper proposes a new multipledescription (MD) coding method and an associated achievable rate-distortion region for L >= 2 channels. The proposed scheme randomly bins codebooks chosen from the codebook structure, similar to that of the recently proposed combinatorial message sharing (CMS) scheme designed for conditional codebook encoding. The proposed scheme effectively performs multilayer random binning for each subset of the description, which hence enables to utilize the symmetry of a "subset" of the description rates wherever it exists. The new scheme specializes in to the conventional multilayer random binning as an extreme special case.

We study the use of overcomplete (also known as oversampled) subband expansions for multiple description coding. The system proposed uses an overcomplete subband expansion (a subband expansion in which the number of subbands is larger than the downsampling factor of each subband) followed by independent coding (quantization and coding) of each of the subbands. The entire coding of each of the subbands is entirely contained within a single description. Using analysis in the polyphase domain, we study finding frequency responses of optimal filterbanks and the rate allocation across the subbands to minimize the end-to-end reconstruction error subject to a transmission rate constraint when a distribution over channel states is known. A general analysis of the problem is given and results are shown for a 3 x 2 expansion of a first-order autoregressive process.

The paper presents analysis of multiple description coding (MDC) algorithm with spatial division of video stream into substreams. Two objective quality criteria Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Video Quality Metric (VQM) were used for rating of video quality. In case when network losses affect on any video substreams full picture is restored with using of linear interpolation. In this paper, we generalize the concept of natural type selection, initially proposed by *** ***., to multiple description coding. We prove results that are parallel to those of adaptive single descriptioncoding. A universal multiple description coding scheme is then proposed. The scheme codes a source vector at a time, and updates its codebooks based on the joint type of the codewords reconstructed previously. Based on our theoretical results, it can be shown that the rate-distortion performance of the proposed scheme gradually improves as coding proceeds.

This paper aims to provide a new multiple description coding for 3D video considering objects existed in the scene. To this end, a low complex algorithm for realizing objects in 3D scene will provided and then a nonidentical decimation method with respect to objects will be utilized to produce descriptions of MDC approach. This paper presents a new low complexity multiple description coding (MDC) method that can generate any number of descriptions. For correlated sources, a special DPCM encoder is used in each description, such that it carries higher rate information of a subset of the samples and lower rate information of the rest. The lower rate codings in different descriptions are designed to be mutually refinable using staggered scalar quantizers. The closed-form expression of the expected distortion is derived when an arbitrary subset of the descriptions are received. Experimental results on natural images using lapped transform show that the proposed method is competent with the state-of-the-art multipledescription image coders.

In this paper, a weighted reconstruction method for the prediction-compensated multiple description coding (PC-MDC) with two descriptions is proposed. Different from the original PC-MDC, where the redundant data are simply discarded when both descriptions are received, we use a weighted average of all available data to recover the signal. The closed-form solution of the optimal weighting factors and the corresponding bit allocations are derived for M-band perfect reconstruction filter bank based PC-MDC. The asymptotic performance of the method is also studied. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed method further reduces the expected distortion and the distortion product of the non-weighted PC-MDC method.
