Multicasting multiple description coding Using p-cycle Network coding

This paper deliberates for a multimedia transmission scheme combining multiple description coding (MDC) and network coding (NC). Our goal is to take advantage from the property of MDC to provide quantized and compressed independent and identically distributed (iid) descriptions and also from the benefit of network coding, which uses network resources efficiently to recover lost data in the network. Recently, p-cycle NC has been introduced to recover and protect any lost or distorted descriptions at the receiver part exactly without need of retransmission. So far, MDC have not been explored using this type of NC. Compressed and coded descriptions are transmitted through the network where p-cycle NC is applied. P-cycle based algorithm is proposed for single and multiple descriptions lost. Results show that in the fixed bit rate, the PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) of our reconstructed image and also subjective evaluation is improved significantly compared to previous work which is averaging method joint with MDC in order to conceal lost descriptions.

In this paper, the stabilization problem is investigated for a class of linear discrete-time systems in a resource-constrained network environment where only the data with finite bits is permitted to transmit. The data transmissions from the sensors to the controller are subject to random packet dropouts. To improve the reliability of the data transmission, a novel dynamical multiple description coding scheme is developed with guaranteed convergence of the decoding error. By recurring to the matrix inequality theory and the stochastic analysis technique, sufficient conditions are established to ensure the stochastic stability of the closed-loop system. Furthermore, a parametric relationship is discovered that characterizes the influences from the packet-dropout probabilities and the encoder parameters on the stability of the closed-loop system. Finally, a numerical example is provided to illustrate the validity of the proposed control scheme.& COPY;2023 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Quality of experience enhancement of high efficiency video coding video streaming in wireless packet networks using multiple description coding

Recently, video streaming has attracted much attention and interest due to its capability to process and transmit large data. We propose a quality of experience (QoE) model relying on high efficiency video coding (HEVC) encoder adaptation scheme, in turn based on the multiple description coding (MDC) for video streaming. The main contributions of the paper are (1) a performance evaluation of the new and emerging video coding standard HEVC/H.265, which is based on the variation of quantization parameter (QP) values depending on different video contents to deduce their influence on the sequence to be transmitted, (2) QoE support multimedia applications in wireless networks are investigated, so we inspect the packet loss impact on the QoE of transmitted video sequences, (3) HEVC encoder parameter adaptation scheme based on MDC is modeled with the encoder parameter and objective QoE model. A comparative study revealed that the proposed MDC approach is effective for improving the transmission with a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) gain of about 2 to 3 dB. Results show that a good choice of QP value can compensate for transmission channel effects and improve received video quality, although HEVC/H.265 is also sensitive to packet loss. In video coding and transmission, the network conditions are crucial, i.e., bandwidth, delay and other factors. However, how to effectively take these factors into account is still a challenge, as heterogeneous networks are dynamic, and therefore it is difficult to predict their changes. This paper first reports a post-encoding of Scalable multiple description coding (SMDC), which is towards self-adaptive video delivery under different conditions of the network. The proposed scheme contains three major steps: (1) spatiotemporal wavelet transformation of input video sequence: (2) context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding;and (3) rate allocation under the conditions of the network and analysis of the principle relationship of the rate-distortion slope ratio with packet-loss probability in network links. The performance of the SMDC is compared with that of scalable video coding and scalable H.264, and SMDC is demonstrated to effectively optimize the video delivery to adapt to the dynamics of heterogeneous networks. A two-channel MDC framework based on the Space-Frequency Quantization (SFQ) algorithm is proposed in this paper. Redundancy used in this frame is introduced by the overlap of the optimization sets. For each channel contains the information from all the three directions, the reconstruction of the one single channel can give a good estimation of the original information. Good experimental results show the efficiency of this new proposed method.

Mine disaster occurred, underground power and communications systems were severely damaged, and cause great difficulties for the relief effort. Therefore, it has some practical value to design a suitable video network which is applied to underground. In this paper, we propose a simple scheme of wireless multimedia sensor network for mine rescue that combines the multiple descriptions transform coding (MDTC) method with the discrete wavelet transform (DWT), and propose the active images detection algorithm which can separate the active images from the background. Simulation result shows that this scheme has a good performance in video compression and reliable transmission.

Estimating Rate-Distortion for multiple description coding Based on Zero Padding

In the studies related to multiple description coding (MDC), applying zero padding not only improves the spatial correlation between descriptions but also increases their sizes. However, as we pad more zeros, the spatial correlation does not improve linearly. Therefore, the distortion is not reduced as the same amount when the size increases. In this paper, we focus on how to efficiently find an acceptable trade-off between the number of padded zeros and the increase of distortion in MDC. In this paper, we propose two distortion estimations for MDC with zero padding based on spatial quincunx distribution, which are standard deviation for distortion estimation and triangular linear approximation distortion estimation (TLA-DE) to efficiently calculate the distortion for the number of padded zeros atthe horizontal direction. In order to search for the acceptable number of padded zeros, we propose two search methods, Naive Search and Best Division Search, which are both based on the proposed rate-distortion trade-off indicator. Our experiments result show that the worst error of distortion estimation by TLA-DE is up to 18%, but the average is 5.5% with 95% confidence level. The executing time of best division search is about two times faster than that of naive search for 11 test sequences. To sum up, we confirm that the acceptable trade-off between rate and distortion in low computational complexity can be found by using the best division search on TLA-DE.

Balanced multiple description video coding using optimal partitioning of the DCT coefficients

In this paper, we propose a balanced multiple description video coding scheme which is based on the partitioning of the discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients. Our scheme splits the single-layered stream generated by a standard coder into two correlated and balanced (virtually identical rates and distortions) substreams. The optimization is in the redundancy-rate-distortion sense using Lagrangian relaxation for optimum allocation of redundancy among the blocks in the frame. A greedy algorithm to meet the equal distortions criterion and an algorithm to optimally achieve equal bit rates for the two descriptions are proposed. Our simulation results substantiate our claim of achieving balanced descriptions at high peak signal-to-noise ratios values for any specified redundancy and any target bit rate. Our design complies with the existing motion-compensated DCT-based standards, i.e., each description can be independently decoded by any standard decoder.

We propose a novel multiple description video coding scheme based on pre-and post-processing of video sequences without modifying the actual coding process itself,thus making it compatible with the current standard *** pre-processing,adaptive modes of temporal sampling are employed to regulate the motion change between frames before performing odd/even frame splitting,which facilitates good estimation of lost frames in post-processing after side ***,given a central distortion,rate-distortion optimization with Lagrangian formulation is applied in pre-processing to achieve a good tradeoff between bit rate and side ***,to simplify Lagrangian optimization,a new optimization criterion is proposed based on the correlation of intra-and *** the experiments,the proposed scheme achieves better performance compared with other tested multiple description coding(MDC)schemes in both an on-off MDC environment and lossy packet networks.

HEVC compatible perceptual multiple description video coding for reliable video transmission over packet networks

multiple description coding (MDC) has been an effective scheme for reliable transmission of videos over error prone networks but requires higher data rates. Recently, perceptual video coding schemes are able to encode videos at a lower data rate, but with the same perceived decoding quality. Such schemes exploit human visual system (HVS) properties to encode videos. Although HVS characteristics have been used in MDC, but only for residual information and are not fully standard compatible. To this end, we propose a high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard compatible perceptual multiple description video coding (PMDVC) framework. Our proposed framework temporally sub-samples the input video into even and odd frame sub-sequences, which are individually encoded (using HEVC) in a perceptual manner. We encode each description using a context based visual saliency model to obtain visual saliency mask, which is optimally thresholded into salient and non-salient regions. coding tree unit (CTU) level perceptual relevance mask of each frame is generated by dividing binary saliency mask into five different groups. The quantization parameter at CTU level of each perceptual relevant group is adjusted in such a manner that data rate is minimized while maintaining the perceived quality. Our proposed HEVC based PMDVC scheme is evaluated under lossless and lossy channel conditions. Our results show better performance in data rate reduction, perceptual peak signal-to-noise-ratio, multi- scale structural similarity index, and difference mean opinion score, when compared with HEVC based temporally sub-sampled multiple description video coding scheme.
