This paper proposes a novel and efficient two-description image coding scheme in the wavelet domain. Here, each description includes one basic description produced by pairwise correlating transform (PCT) and one enhanced description formed by quincunx sub-sampling. First, we partition the low-frequency wavelet coefficients into two groups. Then the PCT was applied between the two groups to generate two new correlated groups as two basic descriptions, which are coded and transmitted through two separate channels. Second, we can get two enhanced descriptions from the high-frequency wavelet coefficients of the highest-level decomposition by quincunx sub-sampling. And the Wavelet Domain Interpolation for tree Reconstruction (WDIR) is used to conceal coefficients loss in Wavelet-Trees when one enhanced description lost during transmission. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed MDC scheme can achieve good coding performance.

A novel multipledescription image coding scheme, called dual-tree discrete wavelet transform based multipledescription image coding is proposed. First, the 2D dual-tree discrete wavelet transform is applied to an image to produce 2 wavelet trees with complementary information. A noise-shaping algorithm is then employed to remove the redundancies of both trees and form the basic parts of two descriptions. A side noise shaping algorithm is proposed to draw the supplementary information for side decoding from the other tree. Basic information from one tree and supplementary from the other tree are grouped to form a description. Two descriptions are then dispatched from different channels. Because every description includes critical information of the picture, the reconstructed image from any single channel can have acceptable fidelity. The reconstructed image is of much better quality if both channels are available. Simulation results have demonstrated the performance of the proposed algorithm.

A new MD (multipledescription) video coding method, which is based on balanced multiwavelet image transformations, is proposed here. First, we apply balanced multiwavelet transformation to the image;then, corresponding components of each sub-band are gathered together, so that we can decompose the image into 4 MDs. By treating every frame of the video sequences like this, we can get a theme of MD video coding. A practical MD coding theme must satisfy two requirements. First, each description should carry the same amount of information. Secondly, there must be dependence between each description. Among commonly used multiwavelets, we find that only balanced multiwavelets can satisfy these two requirements. Furthermore, based on the feature of CARDBAL2 multiwavelet and strict mathematical deductions, we also find a way to estimate the lost descriptions. The experimental results presented in this paper show that, even when 75% of the data of the image are lost, we could still get a good-quality recovered image, with a PSNR value of nearly 30dB.

multiple description coding (MDC) is a technique for video transmission over error prone networks where the descriptions are routed over multiple paths. Intra coding technique and MDC both provides error resiliency for real-time video transport over unreliable networks. In this paper, we present our investigation results for a new intra coding approach for MDC where selective frames are fully encoded in intra mode instead of coding selective macroblocks in intra mode in many frames. We implemented our scheme in the H.264/AVC reference software, JM16.0. Based on the experimental performance evaluation, we show that our method achieves higher average PSNR compared to the other optimized MDC schemes available in the literature.

In this paper, we design a new multiple description coding scheme for image signals based on our proposed compression-guided optimization. Firstly, we propose a compression-constrained adaptive filtering method to produce two descriptions for the source image, where the proposed filtering algorithm works not only to guarantee a high-quality side decoding but also make a high-efficient central decoding. Secondly, we design a compression-dependent deblocking algorithm based on the transform coefficients which are decoded from both descriptions to improve the performance for the cental decoding. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method achieves impressive performance gains when it is applied to image signals.

We present a joint design of sound zone control filters and robust audio coding for wireless low frequency sound zones. The audio signal is filtered using sound zone control filters and encoded using a multiple-description coder. The control filters and the multiple-description coder are combined in a nested loop. The inner loop performs filtering for sound zone control and generates multipledescriptions using oversampling and closed-loop prediction. The outer loop performs noise shaping and guarantees a trade-off between robustness and quality of the descriptions. A closed-form expression for the optimal sound-zone control filters are provided, and a simulation study demonstrates that even at moderate packet loss rates, a significant gain is possible compared to not using multipledescriptions.

In this paper a scalable multipledescription video coding approach based on embedded multipledescription scalar quantization (EMDSQ) is presented. The proposed approach enables the progressive transmission of video over unreliable channels with variable bandwidth. Experimental results show that in lossy transmission conditions the proposed embedded multiple description coding system yields better rate-distortion performance compared to single description video coding and can efficiently sustain 20% of losses.

In this paper a novel region of interest (ROI) based scalable multipledescription image coding technique using multipledescription scalar quantizer with successive refinement (MDSQ-SR) is proposed. Visual attention model using graph based visual saliency is used to find the region of interest in the image. ROI based scalable multipledescriptions are then generated by selecting different refinement layers of the side quantizer of MDSQ-SR for the interested and uninterested regions of the image. More number of refinement layers are selected for the interested part as compared to the uninterested part. However, the different refinement layer selection is performed in such a way that the rate distortion constraints of the multiple description coding are satisfied i.e. the joint decoding quality is better than the side decoding quality at particular rate. The proposed scheme is evaluated under lossless and lossy channel conditions. In lossless channels conditions, PSNR of the decoded image using region of interest based scalable multipledescription image coding is increased by 0.6 dB when compared with scalable multipledescription image coding using MDSQ-SR. The average PSNR improvement of the proposed scheme is almost 0.7dB under lossy channel conditions.
