This paper proposes a multipledescription (MD) mesh-based motion coding method, which generates two descriptions for mesh-based motion by subsampling the nodes of a right-angled triangular mesh and dividing them into two groups. Motion vectors associated with the mesh nodes in each group are transmitted over distinct channels. With the nodes in each group, two other regular triangular meshes besides the original one can be constructed, and three different prediction images can be reconstructed according to descriptions available. The proposed MD mesh-based motion coding method is then combined with the pairwise correlating transform (PCT), and a complete MD video coding scheme is proposed. Further measures are taken to reduce the mismatch between the encoder and decoder that occurs when only one description is received and the decoder reconstruction is different from the encoder. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated using computer simulations, and the results show, compared to Reibman's MD transform coding (MDTC) method, the proposed scheme achieves better redundancy rate distortion (RRD) performance. In packet loss scenario, the proposed scheme outperforms the MDTC method.

A new approach for multipledescription video coding is proposed. It employs a second-order predictor for motion-compensation, which predicts a current frame from two previously coded frames. The coder generates two descriptions, containing the coded even and odd frames, respectively.. When only a single description (say, that containing even frames) is received, the decoder can only use previous even frames for prediction. The mismatch between the predicted frames at the encoder and decoder is explicitly coded to avoid error propagation in the ideal MD channels, where a description is either received intact or lost completely. By using the second-order predictor and coding the mismatch signal, one can also suppress error propagation in packet lossy networks where packets in either description can be lost. The predictor and the mismatch signal quantizer can be varied to achieve a Aide range of tradeoffs between coding efficiency and error resilience.

A new multipledescription Transform coding (MDTC) was proposed by combining the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Hadamard Transform (HT). To overcome the inherent drawbacks in the Pairwise Correlating Transform (PCT), which are the computational complexity and hardware implementation, HT was used to introduce an effective redundancy between the descriptions by improving their correlation coefficient. The new approach were analyzed and compared to the conventional scheme in the case of four descriptions by using multiple gray scale test images having different spectral characteristics. The findings show a better performance of the proposed method, especially in the case of two packets lost. In addition, the proposed method ensures a low degradation of the image reconstructed when one packet or two packets are lost. Therefore, the proposed coder provides a good redundancy performance and an easier practical implementation than the classical approach. (C) 2014 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

This paper studies how to reconstruct pictures with the best possible quality upon receiving more than one description at the decoder side of a multiple description coding (MDC) system, assuming that an MDC encoder has been fixed at the encoder side to generate multipledescriptions. To this end, we formulate the problem into a total variation (TV) regularized optimization in which all received descriptions are regarded as targets to form multiple fidelity terms. Two solutions are then developed. First, we solve a standard Lagrange-type optimization involving multiple Lagrange multipliers, and this approach is applicable to any MDC encoder. Second, when multiple quantizers with different step-sizes or dead-zones are used to generate individual descriptions, we make use of the intersection of the overlapped quantization intervals (in the transform domain) in all received descriptions. Both solutions are demonstrated to offer a quality gain (subjective as well as objective) over what can be achieved in the existing methods. In particular, the second approach is found to offer the best gain consistently when a large number of descriptions are needed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The objective of multiple description coding (MDC) is to represent a source into multipledescriptions such that various reconstruction qualities are obtained from different subsets of the descriptions. In this paper, we propose a simple scheme that combines the multipledescriptions transform coding (MDTC) method with the discrete wavelet transform (DWT). We compare the performance of the proposed scheme with a discrete cosine transform (DCT)-based scheme prevalent in other papers. Simulation results show that our proposed DWT technique outperforms both objectively and subjectively the method based on DCT in the case of packet loss. (C) 2006 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

The objective of multiple description coding (MDC) is to encode a source into multipledescriptions supporting different quality levels of reconstruction. In this paper, we use the multipledescription transform coding (MDTC) algorithm based on the wavelet transform that has been shown to be robust to packet losses allowing a graceful quality degradation. The case of transmitting still images with four descriptions is considered. We propose to use subband uniform quantization with different quantization steps, optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA), when compressing to a target bit-rate. Simulation results show that the proposed method offers substantial improvements in the case of packet loss when compared to previously reported work that applies uniform quantization with a fixed step size. We consider the problem of efficient image/video transmission over wireless channels. Such a problem involves good compression rates and effectiveness in presence of channel failures. In this work, we use the multiple description coding (MDC) techniques. based on Wavelet Transforms, that have been shown to be powerful against channel failures. We propose a bit allocation procedure that dispatches the source redundancy between the different channels when compressing to a target bit rate with a bounded side distortion. In this way, we develop an MDC scheme well adapted to channel noise. Then, we extend this bit allocation to video. This extension uses the 3D scan-based DWT of Parisot et al. (MMSP, IEEE, New York, 2001);that involves scan-based MDC with rate or quality control. In this work we propose to adapt redundancy between the descriptors in function of channel model and state (BER). Furthermore, the channels can have time-varying states. We consider BSC channels, Gaussian channels, and UMTS channels. The method can be efficiently extended to other channels when the channel model that matches the channel behavior is known. We evaluate the performance of the proposed MDC image/video coder for two descriptions. In a first group of simulations, we compare our application with some different MDC techniques presented by Vaishampayan (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 39 (3) (1993) 821) and Servetto et al. (ICIP, IEEE, Chicago, USA, 1998;IEEE Trans. Image Process. 9 (5) (2000) 813-826). In a second group of simulations, we evaluate the robustness of the proposed MDC when submitted to different kinds of channels noise. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper addresses the problem of video compression for robust transmission on lossy Internet networks. The approach developed relies on multiple description coding (MDC) principles. Predictive multipledescription video coding has already been considered for robust video transmission over lossy channels. However, MDC, when combined with motion-compensated prediction, is known to suffer from predictive mismatch: in presence of losses, the prediction signal available at the decoder may differ from the one used at the encoder. In this paper, we describe a video compression scheme based on MDC and Wyner-Ziv (WZ) coding. The input sequence is structured into groups of pictures which contain one key frame and one WZ frame. Each frame is first transformed with a wavelet transform and the resulting frequency bands are quantized with a multipledescription scalar quantizer. Two balanced descriptions of the video input are thus generated. The quantization indexes of the WZ frames are coded with an low-density parity-check accumulate-based Slepian-Wolf (SW) coder. The lateral receivers first decode the received key frame lateral descriptions, and then construct the side information needed for decoding the corresponding WZ frame descriptions by motion-compensated interpolation. In the case where the two WZ data descriptions are received, the central decoder can perform a separate SW decoding of the two sequences of quantization indexes. A joint iterative decoding approach of the two WZ descriptions is also described which improve the central WZ data decoding performance, however, at the expense of increased decoding complexity. The influence of the proposed iterative decoding technique and of the amount of redundancy on the lateral and central rate-distortion performance of the algorithm is studied.

During the last years, video coding designers have proposed robust coding approaches that combine multiple description coding (MDC) schemes with Distributed Video coding (DVC) principles. In this way, it is possible to obtain a better error resilience since the distortion drifting through the sequence is significantly mitigated by the DVC coding unit. The paper presents a multipledescription Distributed Video Coder (MDDVC) that codes the input video signal generating a set of "lossy" syndromes for each pixel block and creates different descriptions multiplexing primary and redundant video packets. Experimental results show that at high loss probabilities the proposed solution improves the results of the original MDC approach.
