Block compressed sensing belongs to one newly developed compression technique in recent years. Aside from conventional trend to look for compression performances, we aim at reliable transmission for block compressed sensing signals over lossy channels. Without any protection scheme, block compressed sensing may suffer from severe degradation after reception. We look for the inherent characteristics of original images, and apply variable block sizes with protection schemes for block compressed sensing. Simulation results have demonstrated the effectiveness of proposed scheme suitable for variable-sized block compressed sensing over lossy channels.

A novel multiple description coding method, named Packeted multiple description coding (PMDC) is presented in this paper. First, we separate the wavelet transformed image into several sub-images and code each sub-image by a method called Unequal Loss Protected multiple description Subband coding (ULPMDC). With this algorithm, we can first form two sub-descriptions, which contain packets from the image, and then we transmit them by two different channels. If no more than one sub-description per sub-image is lost, the proposed algorithm will get very good reconstruction quality. If more sub-descriptions per sub-image are lost, the reconstruction quality is severely degraded. To provide better quality of the reconstructed image, we then modify the packetizing process, and propose a novel packetized MDC framework, named Cross Packetized multiple description coding (CPMDC). In this method, instead of applying ULPMDC on sub-images, we first code the whole image into two descriptions. Then we split each description horizontally and vertically to form row packets and column packets, respectively. The simulation results show that if only some row packets or column packets are lost, the reconstruction quality is still as good as the former scheme. If we lose both columns and rows, CPMDC will still be better than PTSQ.

We consider analog multiple description joint source-channel schemes for the transmission of a Gaussian source over two independent AWGN parallel channels under a quadratic error distortion criteria. For such systems, Lines mapping was proved to be a simple and efficient mapping when MMSE decoding is used. However, MMSE decoding presents a high computational load. In order to reduce complexity of such schemes, this paper studies the suitability of replacing the MMSE decoders by the much simpler ML decoders. The scenario where the ML decoders have some additional side information (Wyner-Ziv scenario) is also analyzed. Their performances are compared with the corresponding theoretical bound and with the obtained simulation results of their MMSE counterparts.

In this paper, a self-recovery image authentication technique is proposed using randomly-sized blocks. To dived an image into randomly-sized blocks, it undergoes recursive arbitrarily-asymmetric quad tree partitioning. multiple description coding (MDC) that enhances reliability of altered block recovery, is utilized to generate two block descriptions. We propose the use of a chain with multiple links for embedding several signature copies and two descriptions per block in arbitrarily distant blocks. The experimental results deposit that the proposed technique successfully both localizes and compensates the alterations. Furthermore, it is robust against the vector quantization (VQ) attack.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is regarded as a promising technique for the next generation wireless networks. In OFDM system, transmitter can provide high data rates by dividing channels into multiple orthogonal subcarriers and then allocates them to different users. But in the field of multicast, the conventional method ignores the differences of the channel condition between the users and therefore forces the modulation be adjusted to serve the worst user. The unique contribution of our work is to maximize the total throughput in a time efficient manner. In this paper, we propose a dynamic-programming-based algorithm to find the maximum capacity of system in a global manner after partitioning the available power into schedulable equal pieces. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm, the system throughput gap between the proposed dynamic-programming-based algorithm and the optimal algorithm is within about 2%, and significantly outperform the lowest channel gain method as well as the previous works.

For the performance evaluation of future wireless communication systems, such as the fourth generation wireless networks, traffic traces of realistic services are needed. multiple description coding (MDC) is gaining a lot of interest lately and is a viable solution to provide robust video services over single or multi hop wireless networks and MDC introduces more flexibility for network coding. Furthermore it has the capability to support heterogeneous terminals as they are accepted to be used in 4G wireless networks. By means of twelve well known video sequences, in different video formats, we generate the frame size traces and evaluate the multiple description coding characteristics. In addition to that we highlight the expected overhead due to the underlying RTP/UDP/IP protocol suite. As an objective quality measurement at the application layer, we investigate the video quality in dependency of lost and error-prone descriptors. This allows researcher to convert the network losses of their network models directly into video quality values. This step makes the work unique as single layer coded video streams would always need further postprocessing to retrieve the video quality.

Addressing transmission errors in underwater acoustic channels is a key challenge for the real-time video communication between an autonomous underwater vehicle and a surface station. In this paper, we propose an error-resilient video compression technique based on hybrid multiple descriptions and redundant pictures to overcome impact of packet loss in underwater acoustic transmission. Video sequences are split into two descriptions with selective redundant pictures in order to achieve a balance between coding efficiency and error resiliency. Experiments with underwater video sequences are presented to assess the performance of the proposed approach under various packet loss rates, in comparison to state-of-the-art single and multiple description coding techniques.

We propose a multi-object content delivery method for use in a ubiquitous environment where many nodes are connected. In our target applications, a node receive multiple objects from multiple nodes to display content. We assume that each object is encoded by multiple description coding (MDC) and copies of the descriptions are stored in multiple nodes. We determine the quality of each object based on user requirements and the network bandwidth available for use by nodes. In addition, to reduce the impact of node removal, sending nodes are selected using a heuristic algorithm that reduces the number of overlapping nodes in the delivery path. Experimental results show that our method could determine the quality of objects, the sending nodes, and efficient delivery paths within a reasonable time.

In this article, the development of an efficient and reliable multiple description coding (MDC) scheme over unreliable communication networks is described. A general framework of multiple description robust communication system with 2- and 4-channel cases is presented with a proposed block-based de separation approach. The advantage of this system is that, if all the channels work a high quality reconstruction can be achieved, while a lower but still acceptable quality can be achieved if some of the channels are lost. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), mean squared error (MSE), bit rate, entropy and redundancy are also calculated with the proposed method to analyze the reconstruction quality. It is found that the proposed,method gives comprehensive improvements over the other recently developed methods.

In a recent paper, Wei and Zakhor [1] presented a novel multipath selection framework for streaming video over wireless ad-hoc networks. We point out some limitations of their approach and suggest techniques to overcome those limitations. We propose that different metrics for multipath computation should be used when different schemes (e.g., multiple description coding and Layered coding) are used for video encoding. We adopt a more practical measurement technique for predicting the quality of a link. In addition to analytical reasoning for improved performance of our techniques, we conduct extensive experimentation to evaluate the efficacy of our approach. The results demonstrate that our approach leads to significantly better performance when compared to the approach proposed in [1].
