multiple description (MD) source coding is a method to overcome unexpected information loss in a diversity system such as the internet, or a wireless network. While classic MD coding handles the situation where the rate in some channels drops to zero temporarily, thus causing unexpected packet-loss, it fails to accommodate more subtle changes in link rate such as rate reduction. In such case, a classic scheme can't use the link capacity left for information transfer, causing even minor rate reduction to be considered as link failure. In order to accommodate such a frequent situation, we propose a more modular design for transmitting over a diversity system, which can handle unexpected reduction in link's rate, by downgrading the original description into a more coarse description, so it would fit to the new link's rate. The method is analyzed theoretically, and performance results are presented.

Recent works have shown how multiple description coding (MDC) proves to be an effective solution for the multimedia transmission over Peer-to-Peer and Content Delivery Networks. However, despite the flexibility and scalability of these novel transmission paradigms, packet streams are still affected by losses, and an effective packet labelling that differentiates the QoS levels for the transmitted data is required. The paper presents a Game Theory based approach to classify the MDC coded video packets that are downloaded from a set of terminals spread throughout the network. The proposed approach improves the quality of the reconstructed sequence with limited feedback information from the network.

This paper presents a quality evaluation of three-dimensional Colour-plus-Depth videos over error prone IP networks and illustrates an overall cloud architecture in which such an evaluation platform may reside. For achieving video transmission both scalable and multiple-description coding techniques are utilized. On evaluating the impact of packet loss to the perceived 3D video quality, asymmetric packet loss was used for characterizing path diversity. Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for the multiple description scheme is affected by both the encoding parameters and the sensed packet loss rate at each 3D description. The effect of 3D video reconstruction through interpolation using a single yet reliably delivered description was compared against using the overall number of delivered descriptions. Throughout this experiment it was found that almost all subjects tend to rate the first group of reconstructed 3D videos with higher scores when the network delivery mechanism undergoes severe packet loss rate conditions.

Design of multipath routing schemeis a challenging task as its topology is very dynamic in mobile adhoc network (MANET) environments. Providing reliability is more important while designing the routing protocol. Hence, multipath routing protocol which is based on Quality of Service parameters is proposed in this paper. The QoS parameters considered are delay, bandwidth and hop count. Different types of traffic such as real-time traffic and non-real-time traffic are considered. In order to improve reliability by reducing number of retransmissions, an additional packet is generated in the case of non-real time traffic and multiple description coding is used in the case of real-time traffic. The proposed algorithm, MRQ is simulated using NS-2 and compared with the existing competing schemes - QAMR and RA-MDC. Simulation results proved that the perfomance of our scheme is better in terms of End-to-End delay, packet delivery ratio, Peak Signal Noise Ratio (PSNR) and retransmissions ratio metrics.

In this paper we propose a system based on multiple description coding (MD) to stream video over lossy or variable bandwidth networks. MD coding can be integrated in several ways into existing state-of-the-art video codecs, as MPEG or the new H.264. The proposed scheme is based on polyphase downsampling in the pixel domain, followed by independent coding of descriptions by means of existing video codecs. Other schemes are cited for comparison. For the proposed scheme, several enhancements are discussed: frames expansion, joint encoding and joint decoding. We compare the coding efficiency and the robustness to losses and errors with respect to standard and error-resilient single description coding (SD).

A cross-layer framework of interplay between multiple description coding (MDC) at the source and layered modulation using superposition coding (SPC) at the channel has recently been proposed as an effective approach to mitigate the vicious effects due to multi-user diversity and fast Rayleigh fading in wireless video broadcast/ multicast. However, there has not been a rigorous and general end-to-end distortion analysis to determine if and when such interplay between the protection code (such as MDC) in the upper layer and the multi-resolution modulation by way of SPC in PHY/MAC layer for transmitting successively refined information can lead to a better end-to-end distortion performance than other possibilities. The paper provides a comprehensive information theoretical analysis on the end-to-end distortion. Mathematical proofs are derived to confirm the advantages and conditions of such cross-layer systems to always give the better distortion performance. Numerical analysis is conducted to verify the mathematical conclusions while unveiling some interesting observations.

In general, on-demand video services enable clients to watch videos from beginning to end. As long as clients are able to buffer the initial part of the video they are watching, on-demand service can provide access to the video to the next clients who request to watch it. In our previous research work, we proposed a novel caching scheme for peer-to-peer on-demand streaming, called Dynamic Buffering. The dynamic buffering relies on the feature of multiple description coding to gradually reduce the number of cached descriptions held in a peer's buffers once the buffer is full. In this paper(1), we proposed three description dropping policies for dynamic buffering, called sequence dropping, m-dropping, and binary dropping. Mathematical formulas of the reduced number of buffer adjustments of descriptions and the reduction of the average number of selectable descriptions for m-dropping and binary dropping by factors of n and m were established in the paper. Experimental results showed that the m-dropping, m=inverted right perpendicularn/2inverted left perpendicular generally outperformed m-dropping, m=2 and binary dropping in terms of service availability. Even though the accumulated reduction of buffer adjustments for m-dropping polices was less than that for binary dropping, the average number of selectable descriptions for m-dropping was much greater than that for binary dropping.

In today's world, the use of video conferencing applications has risen significantly. However, with the introduction of affordable head-mounted displays (HMDs), users are now seeking new immersive and engaging experiences that enhance the 2D video conferencing applications with a third dimension. Immersive video formats such as light fields and volumetric video aim to enhance the experience by allowing for six degrees-of-freedom (6DoF), resulting in users being able to look and walk around in the virtual space. We present a novel, open source, many-to-many streaming architecture using point cloud-based volumetric video. To ensure bitrates that satisfy contemporary networks, the Draco codec encodes the point clouds before they are transmitted using web real-time communication (WebRTC), all while ensuring that the end-to-end latency remains acceptable for real-time communication. A multiple description coding (MDC)-based quality adaptation approach ensures that the pipeline can support a large number of users, each with varying network conditions. In this demo, participants will be seated around a table and will engage in a virtual conference using an HMD, with each participant being captured using a single depth camera. To showcase the quality effectiveness of the MDC-based adaptation algorithm, a dashboard is used to monitor the status of the application and control the bandwidth available to each participant. The available bandwidth and position of the user are taken into account to dynamically assign a quality level to each participant, ensuring a higher quality experience compared to having a uniform quality level for each point cloud object.

As consumer-level cameras are becoming cheaper and cheaper, the scene of interest can now be captured by multiple cameras simultaneously from different viewpoints. By transmitting texture and depth maps of the views captured using two adjacent cameras, users can synthesize any view in between using depth image based rendering (DIBR) technique such as 3D-warping. This provides users with continuous view angles and is key technique for Free Viewpoint TV (FTV), etc. In this scenario, multiple views must be delivered through bandwidth-limited wireless networks, how to adaptive reduce the source coding rate to fit the bandwidth becomes an important issue. The standard multi-view video codec H.264 MVC explores the inter-view and intra-view correlation to reduce source encoding rate. But all views are required at the client side for decoding any single view, which is apparently not transmission efficient. A better solution is using H.264 to differentially encode the two adjacent views separately, but still this requires double-folder bandwidth comparing to the traditional video streaming. multiple description coding (MDC) encodes one view into multiple descriptions for robust transmission. This inspires another option: sending only part of each view. This can greatly reduce the source encoding rate, but interpolating skipped frames before synthesizing the middle view consumes mobile devices' precious battery life. Whether to send at a lower source encoding rate but with extra energy consumption or send at a high source encoding rate is non-trivial, and has not been studied in any formal way. In this paper, we investigated both source encoding rate reduction and energy consumption with the bandwidth constraint. We formulated the problem into an optimization problem, i.e., maximizing the system utility, which is defined as the received video quality minus the weighted energy consumption. Path and server diversities have been used to guarantee reliable video streaming communication over wireless networks. In this paper, server diversity over mobile wireless ad hoc networks (MANETs) is implemented. Particularly, multipoint-to-point transmission together with multiple description coding (MDC) and forward error correction (FEC) technique is used to enhance the quality of service of video streaming over the wireless lossy networks. Additionally, the dynamic source routing (DSR) protocol is used to discover maximally disjoint routes for each sender and to distribute the workload evenly within the MANETs for video streaming applications. NS-2 Simulation study demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed mechanism and it shows that the approach achieves better quality of video streaming, in terms of the playable frame rate, reliability and real-time performance on the receiving side.
