This paper studies the quality evaluation of three-dimensional colour-plus depth videos over error prone IP networks. Scalable and multiple-description coding techniques are utilized for transmission. In order to study the impact of packet losses to the perceived 3D video quality, path diversity is characterized by asymmetric packet losses. Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for the multiple description scheme is affected by both the encoding parameters and the sensed packet loss rate at each 3D description. Moreover, the effect of 3D video reconstruction through interpolation using a single, reliably delivered description has been compared against using all delivered descriptions, and it is found out that subject's rate the 3D videos reconstructed using a single descriptions higher scores under severe packet loss rate conditions.

Peer-to-peer streaming is a well-known technology for the large-scale distribution of audio/video contents. Its widespread adoption derives from the possibility of having a good scalability without the need for the deployment of expensive infrastructures such as Content Delivery Networks (CDNs). We think real-time streaming of lessons could open new interesting opportunities in e-learning systems by encouraging interactivity between teachers and learners. Delay requirements are very strict in interactive e-learning scenarios, where playback lag between the event in the real world and the received audio/video should not exceed a few seconds. Only a very short delay would allow students to ask questions during the lesson. At the same time, playback continuity is a key aspect too, since holes in the stream reproduction could seriously compromise the understanding of lectures. In this paper we compared some solutions that try to overcome the limitations of traditional mesh-based P2P systems, which are usually affected by long and unpredictable delays. We finally tried to outline which of the analyzed solutions appears the most suitable one to meet e-learning requirements.

In multimedia transmission over wireless channel, cross-layer diversity techniques, able to take advantage of both application and physical layer diversity, highly improve the overall system performance. Although the optimization of source and channel coding to the diversity orders available from the channel can deeply improve the system performance, low quality image are received at the decreasing of these diversity orders. In this work, we propose an adaptive interleaving technique able to increase the cross-layer diversity gain in the transmission of embedded images/video bitstream over orthogonal frequency diversity multiplexing systems. We construct multiple independent descriptions using a FEC-based strategy, and we analyze the interleaver depth optimization based on the diversity order available in both time and frequency domain. Then, we provide results of the proposed method, and we demonstrate its superior performance in progressive image transmissions. Finally we extend the inter-frame interleaver technique to video transmission in multiuser scenario. The flexibility of the method is able to increase the cross-layer diversity gain, meeting in the meanwhile each user requirements.

multiple description (MD) source coding is a technique that breaks a media stream into equally important sub-streams which can be sent over different paths for protection against channel errors in wireless networks. In this paper, we explore the possibility of sending the descriptions through different paths and intermediately merging them to exploit recovery of the corrupted descriptions from the uncorrupted ones before reaching the destination, thereby increasing the quality of received media at the destination. We first analytically model the end-to-end distortion of MD coded multipath transmission as a function of the path parameters and prove that intermediate recovery achieves an improvement of up to 9.2% in end-to-end distortion compared to traditional multipath transport. We then formulate the mesh route construction as a cross-layer optimization problem. Since the problem is highly complex, we propose an efficient heuristic routing strategy. We show that using this routing strategy, good paths (with up to 2 intermediate recovery nodes) can be constructed to achieve a lower distortion compared to the case without intermediate recovery.

A cross-layer design (CLD) framework for robust and efficient video multicasting over IEEE 802.16 (or WiMAX) is introduced. In the framework, multiple description coding on scalable video bitstreams at the source for achieving multi-resolution robustness is jointly designed with superposition coding (i.e., multi-resolution modulation) on multicast signals at the channel to overcome the channel diversity problem in wireless multicast. The resulting cross-layer coded multicast signals enable us to recover some lost bitstreams in high quality layers, which is not possible if multi-resolution modulation is used alone for multicasting as in previous works. Simulation results show that indeed our joint design outperforms the scheme using only superposition coded multicast by achieving better video quality for users under multi-user channel diversity.

Error resilient coding is strongly demanded by voice communication over unreliable packet networks. In this paper, we propose a new multiple description scheme named distributed subframe interleaving, and employ this new scheme to create two novel multiple description codecs based on CELP. With introducing distributed subframe interleaving operated on two adjacent speech packets, parameters of LSP are interleaved into different descriptions while other parameters belong to different subframes are assigned in subframe-distributed principle. Moreover, parameter interpolation is adopted to restore the lost description without introducing any extra delay at the decoder. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed codecs are able to provide significantly better speech quality than traditional CELP codec and suitable to unreliable packet networks.

A new scheme is proposed for broadcasting video signals over heterogeneous networks. The scheme is based on multiple-description coding (MDC) and aims to suppress the threshold effect. Each description is independently generated and can he used alone or together with other descriptions to reconstruct the video signal. The performance trade-off is analyzed in an information theoretic manner and it is shown that the performance of the proposed scheme approaches the optimum rate-distortion bound under certain source and channel assumptions. Practical simulation results with video signals are provided and discussed.

multiple description (MD) source coding is a method to overcome unexpected information loss in a diversity system such as the internet, or a wireless network. While classic MD coding handles the situation where the rate in some channels drops to zero temporarily, thus causing unexpected packet-loss, it fails to accommodate more subtle changes in link rate such as rate reduction. In such a case, a classic scheme can not use the link capacity left for information transfer, causing even minor rate reduction to be considered as link failure. In order to accommodate such a frequent situation, we propose a more modular design for transmitting over a diversity system, which can handle unexpected reduction in link's rate, by downgrading the original description into a more coarse description, so it would fit to the new link's rate. The method is analyzed theoretically, and performance results are presented.

Several studies indicate that video contents will be the vast majority of Internet traffic in the near future. To facilitate the distribution of video contents, we have to overcome the issue of interoperability between various servers and devices. MPEG-DASH standard is developed to provide standardized manifest format, content format and streaming protocol for adaptive streaming, thereby increasing interoperability. However, MPEG-DASH contents are delivered by HTTP without supporting data multicast. Since delivering video contents over multicast channels is necessary or useful for some applications, the authors survey the studies of delivering MPEG-DASH contents over multicast channels. It is found that few studies discuss the detailed construction of such a mechanism. This paper proposes three methods enabling the delivery of MPEG-DASH contents over multicast are proposed. And also evaluates the performance of the proposed methods over real WiFi networks. The result shows that each method has its own advantages and therefore suitable for different applications.
