Error resilient coding is strongly demanded by voice communication over unreliable packet networks. In this paper, we propose a new multipledescription scheme named distributed subframe interleaving, and employ this new scheme to create two novel multipledescription codecs based on CELP. With introducing distributed subframe interleaving operated on two adjacent speech packets, parameters of LSP are interleaved into different descriptions while other parameters belong to different subframes are assigned in subframe-distributed principle. Moreover, parameter interpolation is adopted to restore the lost description without introducing any extra delay at the decoder. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed codecs are able to provide significantly better speech quality than traditional CELP codec and suitable to unreliable packet networks.

This work presents a framework for multiple description coding (MDC) based scalable image coding. The paper starts with defining the conditions for deviating from the conventional multipledescription scalar quantization (MDSQ) by extending the MDSQ into multiple-channel (more than 2) unbalanced descriptions. These two conditions are extended to define the new framework for MDSQ with successive refinement. We propose that the split or refinement factor for each of the refinement side quantizers should be greater than the number of diagonals filled in the index assignment matrix of the side quantizer design and should not be integer multiples of each other, in order to reduce the distortion in joint decoding when the number of descriptions included in joint decoding is increased. Proofs and verification by simulations of these propositions are are shown in the paper. Experimental results show high robustness of the proposed scheme compared to single description scalable image coding.

The quality of real-time voice communication over best-effort networks is mainly determined by the delay and loss characteristics observed along the network path. Excessive playout buffering at the receiver is prohibitive and significantly delayed packets have to be discarded and considered as late loss. We propose to improve the tradeoff among delay, late loss rate, and speech quality using multi-stream transmission of real-time voice over the Internet, where multiple redundant descriptions of the voice stream are sent over independent network paths. Scheduling the playout of the received voice packets is based on a novel multi-stream adaptive playout scheduling technique that uses a Lagrangian cost function to trade delay versus loss. Experiments over the Internet suggest largely uncorrelated packet erasure and delay jitter characteristics for different network paths which leads to a noticeable path diversity gain. We observe significant reductions in mean end-to-end latency and loss rates as well as improved speech quality when compared to FEC protected single-path transmission at the same data rate. In addition to our Internet measurements, we analyze the performance of the proposed multi-path voice communication scheme using the ns network simulator for different network topologies, including shared network links.
