Study on the optimization of urban passenger traffic structure based on multi-objective linear programming-a case study of Beijing

With the increasing number of car trips in cities, energy consumption and environmental pollution have become key issues in urban transportation. In particular, the increasing use of private cars not only leads to more energy consumption and produces more waste gas, but also makes the traffic structure unbalanced. Therefore, it is necessary to establish and optimize the reasonable traffic structure in order to promote the sustainable development of urban traffic. Based on the characteristics of different transportation modes, this paper proposes a multi-objective optimization model that maximizes transportation utility, minimizes ecological impact, and minimizes generalized cost. The ideal point method, linear weighting method, and hierarchical sequence method were used to solve and compare the model. It has been concluded that the ideal point method is more suitable for the research of this paper and can be applied to optimize the traffic structure of Beijing. Through example analysis, the optimized urban passenger traffic turnover and sharing rate are more scientific and reasonable, which verifies the feasibility of the model. This model not only guarantees the interests of passengers and reduces carbon emissions, it also maximizes the utility of urban traffic and the lowest generalized cost. It reflects the concept of sustainable development of urban transportation. Finally, we are able to make reasonable suggestions to relevant departments based on the optimization results.

On the simplex, interior-point and objective space approaches to multiobjective linear programming

Most multiple objective linear programming (MOLP) algorithms working in the decision variable space, are based on the simplex algorithm or interior-point method of linear programming. However, objective space based methods are becoming more and more prominent. This paper investigates three algorithms namely the Extended Multiobjective Simplex Algorithm (EMSA), Arbel's Affine Scaling Interior-point (ASIMOLP) algorithm and Benson's objective space Outer Approximation (BOA) algorithm. An extensive review of these algorithms is also included. Numerical results on non-trivial MOLP problems show that EMSA and BOA are at par and superior in terms of the quality of a most preferred nondominated point to ASIMOLP. However, ASIMOLP more than holds its own in terms of computing efficiency.

Optimization of sustainable process plant configurations requires the use of systematic assessment methods based on the usage of natural resources, release of pollutants and generation of environmental impact. This paper presents an integrated life cycle optimization framework for the synthesis of microalgae cultivation systems, using a multiple objective linear program formulation;in the model, individual objective functions are aggregated and weighted using the analytic hierarchy process. Four different cultivation alternatives were used as case study to demonstrate the capability of this formulated integrated model. The model takes into account three main environmental criteria in assessing different cultivation alternatives, namely energy, water (direct and indirect water) and carbon footprints. It is determined in the case study that the open pond cultivation system is preferred compared to other alternatives.

An MOLP based procedure for finding efficient units in DEA models

In this paper a multiple objective linear programming (MOLP) problem whose feasible region is the production possibility set with variable returns to scale is proposed. By solving this MOLP problem by multicriterion simplex method, the extreme efficient Pareto points can be obtained. Then the extreme efficient units in data envelopment analysis (DEA) with variable returns to scale, considering the specified theorems and conditions, can be obtained. Therefore, by solving the proposed MOLP problem, the non-dominant units in DEA can be found. Finally, a numerical example is provided.

Electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) materials possess considerable economic value. together with potential toxicity. The rapidly increasing sales of EEE worldwide, constitutes the rational management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) a matter of critical importance, both in economic and environmental terms. Taking into account that reverse logistics is one of the most important parameters in the management of waste equipment, it is particularly important for the manufacturers to control relevant cost in order to be market competitive. One of the most critical decisions regarding reverse logistics costs is the type of carrier to be used. To this end, this paper presents a multicriteria optimisation model for multi-type carriers of WEEE, based on multiple objective linear programming (MOLP). The main goal of a MOLP model is the weighted optimisation of different objectives. In our case. the proposed MOLP approach minimises total logistics costs, consumption of fossil fuel and production of emissions due to transportation of WEEE with the use of different types of containers. The model embodies existing infrastructure in collection points and recycling facilities and targets towards optimisation of the reverse logistics network for a single planning period by taking into account both economic and environmental aspects of the problem under study. AN ALGORITHM FOR OPTIMIZING OVER THE WEALKY-EFFICIENT SET

In this paper a bisecting search algorithm is developed for solving the problem (P) of optimizing a linear function over the set of weakly-efficient solutions of a multiple objective linear program. We show that problem (P) can arise in a variety of practical situations. The algorithm for solving problem (P) is guaranteed to find an optimal or approximately-optimal solution for the problem in a finite number of steps. Using a Fortran computer code called Conmin as an aid, we have solved ten test problems using our proposed algorithm. This preliminary computational experience seems to indicate that the algorithm is quite practical for relatively small problems.

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) and multiple objective linear programming (MOLP) can be used as tools in management control and planning. The existing models have been established during the investigation of the relations between the output-oriented dual DEA model and the minimax reference point formulations, namely the super-ideal point model, the ideal point model and the shortest distance model. Through these models, the decision makers' preferences are considered by interactive trade-off analysis procedures in multiple objective linear programming. These models only consider the output-oriented dual DEA model, which is a radial model that focuses more on output increase. In this paper, we improve those models to obtain models that address both inputs and outputs. Our main aim is to decrease total input consumption and increase total output production which results in solving one mathematical programming model instead of n models. Numerical illustration is provided to show some advantages of our method over the previous methods. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Consequences of dropping nonessential objectives for the application of MCDM methods

In this article we consider the problem of nonessential objectives for multiobjective optimization problems (MOP) with linear objective functions. In 1977 an approach based on the reduction of size of the matrix of objective functions has been worked out by one of the present authors (Gal, T., Leberling, H., 1977. European Journal of Operations Research 1, 176-184). Although this method for dropping nonessential objectives leads to a mathematically equivalent MOP, problems concerning the application of MOP methods may arise. For instance, dropping some (or all) of the nonessential objectives the question is, how to ensure obtaining the same solution as with all objectives involved. We consider the problem of adapting the parameters of multiobjective optimization methods. For the case of weighting methods a simple procedure for adapting the weights is analyzed. For other methods, e.g. reference point approaches, such a simple possibility for adapting the parameters is not given. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The popularity of multiple objective dynamic input-output (MODIO) models in real application was much restricted by their instabilities. In this paper we investigate the mechanism of the instability of the original MODIO models theoretically and develop a modified MODIO model in virtue of the idea of goal programming. The change of Intellectual Property Protection ( IPP) from a softer process patenting to a stronger product patenting in Indian Pharmaceutical Industry ( IPI) is attracting many global drug majors to source their production from India, which is the fourth largest producer of pharmaceuticals in the world. In this paper, the interests of different stake holders like the buyers ( multinational enterprises), who are searching for efficient partners and the vendors ( Indian drug producers) that are competing for the contracts, are analysed for a suitable efficiency evaluation criterion. The primary objective of this paper is to study how various firms in the IPI with different business strategies, competing for the same opportunities can find suitable benchmarking peer groups to meet the challenges of a dynamic business environment using data envelopment analysis ( DEA). A multiple objective DEA model that determines suitable peer groups for inefficient companies is discussed along with more traditional DEA models. The proposed model has the flexibility to include inputs like R& D expenditure and outputs like Exports that are not homogeneously distributed across the firms and address the interests of various stake holders like buyers and vendors simultaneously.
