Integrated efficiency and trade-off analyses using a DEA-oriented interactive minimax reference point approach

A DEA-oriented Interactive Minimax Reference Point (DEA-IMRP) approach was recently developed to support integrated performance assessment and target setting for consistent management control and planning. To conduct the Integrated Efficiency and Trade-off (JET) analyses using the DEA-IMRP approach, it is important to understand the characteristics of the efficiency frontier and interactive trade-off analysis process. In this paper, the features of the IET analyses are investigated in detail. Graphical and analytical methods and procedures are explored for generating and analysing data envelopes and efficient frontiers for multiple input and multiple output DEA models using the DEA-IMRP approach. This computational investigation generates useful insights into the JET analyses and leads to the definition of new efficiency measures, which are instrumental to help conduct trade-off analysis for setting realistic performance targets. A numerical example is studied to illustrate the findings graphically. A case study for UK retail banks is conducted using the new methods and procedures investigated in this paper. INTERACTIVE COMPROMISE HYPERSPHERE METHOD AND ITS APPLICATIONS

The paper focuses on multi-criteria problems. It presents the interactive compromise hypersphere method with sensitivity analysis as a decision tool in multi-objective programming problems. The method is based on finding a hypersphere (in the criteria space) which is closest to the set of chosen nondominated solutions. The proposed modifications of the compromise hypersphere method are based on using various metrics and analyzing their influence on the original method. Applications of the proposed method are presented in four multi-criteria problems: the assignment problem, the knapsack problem, the project management problem and the manufacturing problem.

The first test can be used to determine whether a given basic solution to the problem is optimal. Integrated bank performance assessment and management planning using hybrid minimax reference point - DEA approach

The purpose of assessing past performances and setting future targets for an organisation such as a bank branch is to find where the branch stands in comparison to its peers within the bank branch network and how to improve the efficiency of its operations relatively when compared to the best practice branches. However, future performance targets may be set arbitrarily by the head-office and thus could be unrealistic and not achievable by a branch. A hybrid minimax reference point-data envelopment analysis (HMRP-DEA) approach is investigated to incorporate the value judgements of both branch managers and head-office directors and to search for the most preferred solution (MPS) along the efficient frontier for each bank branch. The HMRP-DEA approach is composed of three minimax models, including the super-ideal point model, the ideal point model and the shortest distance model, which share the same decision and objective spaces, are different from each other only in their reference points and weighting schema, and are proven to be equivalent to the output-oriented DEA dual models. These models are examined both analytically and graphically in this paper using a case study, which provides the unprecedented insight into integrated efficiency and trade-off analyses. The HMRP-DEA approach uses DEA as an ex-post-facto evaluation tool for past performance assessment and the minimax reference point approach as an ex-ante planning tool for future performance forecasting and target setting. Thus, the HMRP-DEA approach provides an alternative means for realistic target setting and better resource allocation. It is examined by a detailed investigation into the performance analysis for the fourteen branches of an international bank in the Greater Manchester area. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. In practice, the unit costs/profits of new products or new projects, the lending and borrowing interest rates, and cash flows are always imprecise. We provide an auxiliary multiple objective linear programming model to solve a linear programming problem with imprecise objective and/or constraint coefficients. Our strategy is to maximize the most possible value of the imprecise profit. At the same time, we would like to minimize the risk of obtaining lower profit and maximize the possibility of obtaining higher profit. This strategy is equivalent to the practical considerations of financial problems. In this paper, a numeric investment problem is solved for illustrating the new approach.

Parametric LP for sensitivity analysis of efficiency in MOLP problems

This paper describes sensitivity analysis in multiple objective linear programming (MOLP) with one of the criteria function coefficients parameterized. The parametric linear programming (LP) is used for analyzing a range set-the parameters set for which a given feasible solution is efficient for MOLP. The main theoretical result is a presentation of convexity of the range set. Moreover, an algorithm based on some of LP problems is presented for generating the range set.

An interactive procedure to improve estimate of value efficiency in DEA

Value efficiency analysis is an approach to incorporate the Decision-Maker's (DM) priori knowledge (preference information) into efficiency analysis. This paper presents a multi-objective programming model to measure the value efficiency. The model's feasible region is the production possibility set in data envelopment analysis (DEA) and the objective functions are the value efficiency scores corresponding to input and output components. Considering the structure of the proposed model and the concept of value efficiency, the step method (STEM) method to solve the model and gain the value efficiency is used in this paper. By selecting MPU (most preferred unit) units based on the manager's choice, the suitable benchmarks and value efficiency scores could be obtained corresponding to the unit under evaluation, then one could see that the obtained benchmarks and value efficiency scores are strongly dependent on the selected MPU units. Finally, a numerical example is proposed to illustrate the credit of the proposed approach. The method has been applied for real world data. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Possibilistic programming approach for fuzzy multidimensional analysis of preference in group decision making

multiple attribute decision making (MADM) problems are the most encountered problems in decision making. Fuzziness is inherent in decision making process and linguistic variables are well suited to assessing an alternative on qualitative attributes using fuzzy rating. A few techniques in MADM assess the weights of attributes based on preference information on alternatives. But they are not practical any more when the set of all paired comparison judgments from decision makers (DMs) on attributes are not crisp and also we have to deal with fuzzy decision matrix. This paper investigates the generation of a possibilistic model for multidimensional analysis of preference (LINMAP). The model assesses the fuzzy weights as well as locating the ideal solution with fuzzy decision making preference on attributes and fuzzy decision matrix. All of the information is assumed as triangular fuzzy numbers (TFNs). This method is developed in group decision making environments and formulates the problem as a possibilistic programming with multiple objectives. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nowadays, organizations deal with numerous economic, environmental, and social problems. To have sustainable operations, they have begun to incorporate environmental and social concerns into conventional economic objectives. A combined cycle power plant (CCPP) is a good instance of an open system with multistage processes and interconnected activities. Efficiency evaluation of CCPPs is a complex task since there exist a variety of inputs (outputs) which enter into any stages of network. Additionally, there might be intermediate products which are consumed by the same power plants. We call such factors "loop" intermediate measures. To measure efficiency of CCPPs, network data envelopment analysis (NDEA) is used. This paper proposes new NDEA models to evaluate efficiency of CCPPs. The proposed models calculate the efficiency of power plants and their sub-sectors under both CRS (constant returns to scale) and VRS (variable returns to scale) assumptions. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis for returns to scale. We apply the new NDEA models to measure relative efficiency of CCPPs. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Marginal rates in DEA using defining hyperplanes of PPS with CRS technology

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) was proposed in a highly influential paper by Charnes et al. (J Oper Res 2:429-444, 1978), who developed the Farrell seminal research (J R Stat Soc 120:253-290, 1957). The aim of the present research is calculating marginal rates for strong and weak efficient decision making units (DMUs) using the defining hyperplanes of the production possibility set (PPS). Toward this end, there are three essential objectives in the current study: (1) Implement Farrell's idea to construct a new PPS called the Farrell PPS. In doing so, important relationships were discovered between the PPSs with constant returns to scale (CRS), non-increasing returns to scale, and non-decreasing returns to scale technologies. (2) Apply the newly constructed Farrell PPS as a catalyst to obtain strong and weak efficient DMUs and explicit form equations of strong and weak defining hyperplanes for the PPS with CRS technology. In order to do this task, a multiple objective linear programming problem is proposed whose structure for the decision space of the criterion space is similar to the proposed Farrell PPS. (3) Calculate the marginal rates for strong and weak efficient DMUs using the obtained explicit form equations of strong and weak defining hyperplanes for the PPS with CRS technology. Finally, an empirical study in the Iranian banking sector is used to show the applicability of the proposed methods.
