An investigation on the performance of a proposed deep learning (DL)-based signal detection scheme over the traditional successive interference cancellation (SIC) method for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) - non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based downlink system for vehicular communication is presented. The proposed scheme is analyzed for a system of two users in a cell experiencing selective frequency Rayleigh fading channels. The DL-based MIMO-NOMA receiver detects signals in a single-step process without explicitly estimating channel state information. The long short-term memory (LSTM) based scheme is proposed to perform joint channel estimation and signal detection. The performance of the proposed DL based detection scheme is compared with the traditional method SIC based on least square (LS) estimation and minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimation. The simulation results show that the proposed DL-based detection is more effective than conventional SIC techniques. Also, it shows better adaptability to variations in cyclic prefix (CP) length and the number of pilot symbols in the frame. It has been observed that even in cases of severe inter-symbol interference (ISI), the proposed DL-based method outperforms the LS and MMSE based conventional SIC detectors. © 2024 IEEE.

Research on uplink performance of MIMO terrestrial-satellite laser communication based on OSM-MBM joint modulation

This paper proposes a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) terrestrial-satellite laser communication uplink system based on optical spatial modulation with medium-based modulation (OSM-MBM) joint modulation. The Malaga(M) distribution is used to describe the combined effects of near-ground turbulent light intensity scintillation, beam wander and angle of arrival fluctuation. The closed expression of the bit error rate (BER) of the OSM-MBM joint modulation MIMO terrestrial-satellite laser communication uplink is derived. The simulation analyzes the influence of transmitting radius, receiving aperture, beam divergence, zenith angle and signal-to-noise ratio on the system error performance, and compares it with traditional modulation, media-based modulation and optical space modulation. Finally, the experiment is verified by Monte Carlo. This research provides a theoretical reference for the engineering realization of the modulation technology for the MIMO terrestrial-satellite laser communication uplink system.

Non-Convex Generalized Nash Games for Energy Efficient Power Allocation and Beamforming in mmWave Networks

Network management is a fundamental ingredient for efficient operation of wireless networks. With increasing bandwidth, number of antennas and number of users, the amount of information required for network management increases significantly. Therefore, distributed network management is a key to efficient operation of future networks. This paper focuses on the problem of distributed joint beamforming control and power allocation in ad-hoc mmWave networks. Over the shared spectrum, a number of multi-input-multi-output links attempt to minimize their supply power by simultaneously finding the locally optimal power allocation and beamformers in a self-organized manner. Our design considers a family of non-convex quality-of-service constraint and utility functions characterized by monotonicity in the strategies of the various users. We propose a two-stage, decentralized optimization scheme, where the adaptation of power levels and beamformer coefficients are iteratively performed by each link. We first prove that given a set of receive beamformers, the power allocation stage converges to an optimal generalized Nash equilibrium of the generalized power allocation game. Then we prove that iterative minimum-mean-square-error adaptation of the receive beamformer results in an overall converging scheme. Several transmit beamforming schemes requiring different levels of information exchange are also compared in the proposed allocation framework. Our simulation results show that allowing each link to optimize its transmit filters using the direct channel results in a near optimum performance with very low computational complexity, even though the problem is highly non-convex.

Parameter Estimation in PMCW MIMO Radar Systems With Few-Bit Quantized Observations

We consider the problem of target parameter estimation in phase modulated continuous wave (PMCW) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems with quantized observations. We derive the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for jointly estimating targets' amplitudes, time delays, Doppler shifts, and directions. The derived bound provides an efficient method to analyze the estimation performance achieved by different quantization schemes. We also devise the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator for the considered parameters, and a direct grid-based method (DGM) is introduced to obtain the ML estimates. To obtain the ML estimates more efficiently, a two-stage scheme is proposed. In the proposed scheme, we first formulate the estimation problem as a sparse signal recovery problem and modify the sparse learning via iterative minimization (SLIM) approach to solve it. Next, a RELAX-based iterative algorithm is proposed to refine the estimates. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can approach the CRB. Simulation results also show that using quantized observations does not affect the estimation performance significantly when the targets' amplitudes are similar.

An Improved SIC-Based Detection Scheme for Non-Uniform Constellations in ATSC 3.0 MIMO

This paper presents an alternative approach to real-valued signal representation and proposes an improved successive interference cancellation (SIC)-based detection scheme using the alternative signal representation for non-uniform constellations (NUCs) in Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0. Since I/Q polarization interleaving in ATSC 3.0 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoding performs a non-linear operation, it makes it difficult to use conventional suboptimal detection schemes based on interference cancellation. Therefore, the alternative signal representation is designed to easily apply various suboptimal detection schemes. Further, to obtain more robustness and lower complexity, a suboptimal detection scheme based on the alternative signal representation and interference cancellation with QR decomposition is proposed. The proposed detection scheme exploits the structural properties of NUCs and jointly detects the real and imaginary parts as a block. In addition, by considering one or more candidate symbols in the interference cancellation for the proposed detection scheme, the performance and the complexity are trade-offs according to the number of the considering candidate symbols. Simulation results show that the proposed detection scheme with a slight increase of the complexity significantly outperforms a linear detection under fixed and mobile channels.

On the Degrees of Freedom Region for Simultaneous Imaging & Uplink Communication

In this paper, we take the first step towards quantifying the fundamental performance trade-offs between imaging and communication supported simultaneously using the same network resources. We analyze an uplink system configuration with a full-duplex base station (BS) illuminating an imaging scene while receiving data from a communication user. Our main contributions are two-fold. First, we propose a unified signal space analysis framework based on the degrees of freedom metric to characterize the trade-offs between the two operations in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime. Second, we propose a dual-function joint processing scheme, decode-and-image, that allows the BS to simultaneously form an image of the scene while decoding the uplink user's data. Our analysis and proposed scheme highlight the benefits of exploiting the uplink signals for imaging, at the cost of increased cooperation between the BS and uplink user. Moreover, our proposed scheme outperforms traditional schemes that enable dual-function operation via spatial or temporal isolation of imaging and communication signals.

Unified Performance Analysis of Antenna Selection Schemes for Cooperative MIMO-NOMA With Practical Impairments

This paper presents a unified outage probability (OP) performance analysis of two hybrid antenna selection (AS) schemes, transmit antenna selection (TAS) and maximal ratio combining (MRC), and joint transmit and receive antenna selection (JTRAS) in multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access based downlink amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying network with channel estimation error (CEE) and feedback delay (FD). Since the communications in the first and second hops are kinds of single-user and multi-user communications, respectively the AS is done as optimal TAS/MRC or JTRAS is applied in the first hop while the suboptimal majority-based TAS/MRC or JTRAS is employed in the second hop. For both TAS/MRC and JTRAS schemes, the OP expressions are derived in single closed-form over Nakagami-m fading channels in the practical and ideal cases. Moreover, in the practical case, the lower bound OP expressions are found and at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values, the OP reaches an error floor value, which means zero-diversity order. In the ideal case, asymptotic OP expressions are obtained in high SNR regime and demonstrate achievable non-zero diversity and array gains. Finally, through simulations and software-defined radio-based real-time tests, the accuracy of theoretical analysis is validated.

MIMO Assisted Networks Relying on Intelligent Reflective Surfaces: A Stochastic Geometry Based Analysis

Intelligent reflective surfaces (IRSs) are invoked for improving both the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). Specifically, an IRS-aided multiple-input multiple-output network is considered, where the performance of randomly roaming users is analyzed by utilizing stochastic geometry tools. As such, to distinguish the superposed signals at each user, the passive beamforming weight at the IRSs and detection weight vectors at the users are jointly designed. As a benefit, by adopting a zero-forcing-based design, the intra-cell interference imposed by the IRS can be suppressed. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed network, we first derive the approximated channel statistics in the high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regime. Then, we derive the closed-form expressions both for the outage probability and for the ergodic rate of users. Both the high-SNR slopes of ergodic rate and the diversity orders of outage probability are derived for gleaning further insights. The network's SE and EE are also derived. Our numerical results are provided to confirm that: i) the high-SNR slope of the proposed network is one;ii) the SE and EE can be significantly enhanced by increasing the number of IRS elements.

Multi-IRS-Aided Multi-User MIMO in mmWave/THz Communications: A Space-Orthogonal Scheme

multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) are two appealing technologies in millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) communications. The challenge of combining these two technologies lies in joint design for active beamforming (at the base-station (BS)/users) and passive beamforming (at the IRSs). In this paper, we consider a multi-IRS-aided multi-user MIMO scenario and propose a novel space-orthogonal scheme by applying zero-forcing techniques. Specifically, we first propose a multi-IRS-based zero-interference criterion, under which multi-user interference can be eliminated regardless of the IRS's phase shifts. Based on this criterion, we decompose the precoder/decoder matrix into a product of two matrices, with one of them devised for interference cancellation and the other one of them devised for achievable rate maximization. Next, an approximate space-orthogonal technique referred to as partial zero-forcing (IRS-PZF) is proposed for proposed for devising the former matrix whose objective is to cancel the multi-user interference;while two efficient phase-shift schemes are proposed for the IRS passive beamforming, namely, water-filling segment matching (WSM) and phase iterative evolution (PIE), which balance between performance and complexity. Finally, we calculate the latter matrix of the precoder/decoder by applying the singular value decomposition (SVD) for the effective BS-user channels, so as to maximize the users' achievable rates. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed scheme compared with the benchmarks.
