Rate Splitting for Multi-Group Multicasting With a Common Message

In this letter, precoding for max-min fairness (MMF) for multi-group multicasting with a common message is studied. The MMF problem is converted into a weighted mean square error minimization problem. A rate-splitting solution is proposed. In rate-splitting, multicast messages for each group are divided into private and common parts, and these common parts, together with the original common message are combined as a super common message. This super common message is superposed on or concatenated to the private multicast data vector, or it is transmitted via a mixed scheme. Simulations show that RS demonstrates significant gains especially in overloaded systems.

Due to the dramatic increase in high data rate services and in order to meet the demands of the fifth-generation (5G) networks, researchers from both academia and industry are exploring advanced transmission techniques, new network architectures and new frequency spectrum such as the visible light and the millimeter wave (mmWave) spectra. Visible light communication (VLC) particularly is an emerging technology that has been introduced as a promising solution for 5G and beyond, owing to the large unexploited spectrum, which translates to significantly high data rates. Although VLC systems are more immune against interference and less susceptible to security vulnerabilities since light does not penetrate through walls, security issues arise naturally in VLC channels due to their open and broadcasting nature, compared to fiber-optic systems. In addition, since VLC is considered to be an enabling technology for 5G, and security is one of the 5G fundamental requirements, security issues should be carefully addressed and resolved in the VLC context. On the other hand, due to the success of physical layer security (PLS) in improving the security of radio-frequency (RF) wireless networks, extending such PLS techniques to VLC systems has been of great interest. Only two survey papers on security in VLC have been published in the literature. However, a comparative and unified survey on PLS for VLC from information theoretic and signal processing point of views is still missing. This paper covers almost all aspects of PLS for VLC, including different channel models, input distributions, network configurations, precoding/signaling strategies, and secrecy capacity and information rates. Furthermore, we propose a number of timely and open research directions for PLS-VLC systems, including the application of measurement-based indoor and outdoor channel models, incorporating user mobility and device orientation into the channel model, and combining VLC and RF systems to realize the

User Grouping and Power Allocation for Downlink NOMA-Based Quadrature Spatial Modulation

Conventional non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based spatial modulation (SM) systems utilize only the real part of amplitude-phase modulation (APM) symbols for transmission, but quadrature spatial modulation (QSM) can extend this to two orthogonal components to improve the spectral efficiency. In this way, we propose a NOMA-based QSM system in multiple-input multiple-output scenarios, where APM symbols are divided into real and imaginary components for transmission and then these two components are sent by real and imaginary transmit antennas, respectively. To further improve the performance of our proposed system, we also propose a user grouping and a power allocation with relatively low complexity. Different from previous schemes, the user grouping scheme is designed for considering channel conditions, user locations, and channel correlations jointly. Moreover, the power allocation scheme is performed in each group to meet users& x2019;quality-of-service requirements, i.e., target-rate requirements. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed schemes by comparing with existing ones.

Low Complexity Signal Detection for Massive-MIMO Systems

Maximum likelihood detection is infeasible in uplink multiuser massive multiple-input and multiple-output (m-MIMO) systems due to the large dimension of the MIMO systems. Accordingly, suboptimal or near-optimal alternatives like linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) detector and Zero Forcing (ZF) are used. However, the LMMSE and the ZF detectors need matrix inversion, which is computationally costly. We propose two detection schemes for massive MIMO, which compute an approximate inverse based on the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, and have quadratic complexity in the number of users. Simulation results exhibit the similarity of the BER performance of the proposed schemes to that of the ideal ZF or LMMSE.

The increased proliferation of connected devices requires a development of innovative technologies for the next generation of wireless systems. One of the key challenges, however, is the spectrum scarcity, owing to the unprecedented broadband penetration rate in recent years. Based on this, visible light communication (VLC) has recently emerged as an effective potential solution for enabling high-speed short-range communications. Yet, despite their undoubted advantageous features, VLC systems suffer from several limitations which constraint their capabilities. As a result, several multiple access (MA) techniques, such as space-division multiple access (SDMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), have been considered in VLC networks as an effective approach, among others, to circumvent these limitations. However, despite their achievable multiplexing gain, their overall performance is still limited compared to the overall potential of this technology. Motivated by this, the presented article offers two contributions: firstly, we provide an overview of the key MA technologies used in VLC systems and then we introduce rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA), and discuss its capabilities and potentials in VLC systems. Secondly, through realistic system modeling and simulations of an RSMA-based two-user scenario, we illustrate the flexibility of RSMA as well as its superiority in terms of the achievable weighted sum rate over NOMA and SDMA in the context of VLC. Finally, we discuss technical challenges, open issues, and research directions, along with the offered results and insights that are expected to be useful towards the effective practical realization of RSMA in VLC configurations.

Efficient control of a nonlinear solid oxide fuel cell system using an adaptive model predictive controller

Over the years, the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is growing commercially due to its high fuel flexibility, lesser maintenance requirement, and environmental friendliness feature. However, its control is challenging due to its nonlinear behavior and simultaneous management of its operational constraints. Therefore, in this work, an adaptive model predictive control is designed systematically to handle the SOFC's behavior while optimizing its operational constraints such as fuel input, utilization factor, and change in pressure of hydrogen and oxygen. This model-oriented control linearizes, augments, and discretizes the SOFC during run time while estimating the states using a time-varying Kalman filter. Finally, it optimizes the control problem for predicting the internal states of the SOFC using successive linearization. The simulation results show that the proposed controller gives better performance of the SOFC in linear region, and significantly improved performance in nonlinear region in comparison to the conventional model predictive controller. The validation of the work has been done through real-time simulation using OPAL-RT's hardware setup. Using such control is beneficial as it enhances the efficiency of the SOFC significantly. Thus, this advanced controller is most suited for these kinds of nonlinear systems due to its superior performance.

Wideband low cost FR4 epoxy based antenna with H-shaped slot for V-band applications

This article proposes a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) antenna fed by microstrip transmission to operate in V-band and fifth generation (5G) (60/70 GHz band) applications. The proposed millimeter wave (mm-wave) antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 25.68 GHz (fractional bandwidth of 41%) between 49.77 and 75.45 GHz frequency and has a maximum realized gain of 3.75 dBi. Compared with other studies, the reported antenna has a size reduction of up to 73% with its 8 x 9.7 mm(2)(1.33 lambda x1.61 lambda) dimension. The designed SIW patch is also fed by grounded coplanar waveguide transmission and its results are compared with the one fed by microstrip transmission line. Another important feature of the proposed antenna is that it has a low production cost, since it is printed on a cheap FR4 substrate material. Therefore, the proposed antenna has the potential to meet all the necessary requirements to be used for V-band portable devices and applications. A 2 x 2 multiple-input multiple-output antenna based on the proposed antenna structure is also analyzed with respect to isolation, diversity gain and envelope correlation coefficient and acceptable results are obtained.

Secure beamforming design in MIMO NOMA networks for Internet of Things with perfect and imperfect CSI

In this paper, we investigate the secure beamforming design in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) en-abled Internet of Things (IoT) networks, where a controller transmits confidential messages to multiple actuators and a cooperative controller acts as a jammer to prevent a potential eavesdropper from wiretapping the information. Our goal is to maximize achievable secrecy sum rate subject to the successful successive interference cancellation constraint and transmit power constraints of the controller and jammer. When channel state information (CSI) is perfect, we design the secure beamforming by developing an iterative optimization algorithm based on minimum mean square error (MMSE) method. When perfect CSI is not available, we model the channel errors as deterministically-bounded, and propose a robust secure beamforming design algorithm based on weighted MMSE and cutting-set method. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is verified by the simulation results.

Passive MIMO Radar Detection with Unknown Colored Gaussian Noise

The target detection of the passive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar that is comprised of multiple illuminators of opportunity and multiple receivers is investigated in this paper. In the passive MIMO radar, the transmitted signals of illuminators of opportunity are totally unknown, and the received signals are contaminated by the colored Gaussian noise with an unknown covariance matrix. The generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) is explored for the passive MIMO radar when the channel coefficients are also unknown, and the closed-form GLRT is derived. Compared with the GLRT with unknown transmitted signals and channel coefficients but a known covariance matrix, the proposed method is applicable for a more practical case whenthe covariance matrix of colored noise is unknown, although it has higher computational complexity. Moreover, the proposed GLRT can achieve similar performance as the GLRT with the known covariance matrix when the number of training samples is large enough. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed GLRT is verified by several numerical examples.

Modulation classification plays an important role in various civil and military applications. In this paper, we study the modulation classification for successive relaying multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with interference. To mitigate the effect of interference from another relay node, we adopt a method that jointly identify the modulation types of the source node and the relay node. Specifically, higher order moments (HOMs) and higher order cumulants (HOCs) of the received signal are used as the discriminating features in random forest (RF) to classify the modulation types. Extensive simulations verify the advantages of the proposed scheme over the traditional scheme that treats the interference as colored noise.
