Improved Frequency Domain Channel Estimation and Equalization for MIMO Wireless Communications

This paper introduces an improved frequency domain channel estimation method based on interpolation vectors for single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) with the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scheme. The proposed algorithm is derived by employing the least squares (LS) criterion, and a specified application for the wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) Rayleigh fading channel is presented. The channel frequency domain responses estimated at two adjacent pilot blocks are used to track the time-variant channel information, which can effectively improve the accuracy of channel estimation without significantly increasing complexity. Maximum mean square error (MMSE) frequency domain equalization based on the estimated channel is employed in the receiver to recover transmitted signals. This paper also investigates a training sequence design method for multiple transmit antennas and a noise variance estimation method. Numerical simulation results show that the proposed methods can perform very well for fading channels with long multipath delay and high Doppler spread.

This paper presents field experiments on open-loop precoding multiple input multiple output (MIMO) using a testbed targeting International Mobile Telecommunication Advanced (IMT-Advanced) systems. Open-loop MIMO is realized by applying Rotational OFDM (R-OFDM) to MIMO transmission. MIMO R-OFDM is more robust with respect to correlated channels than conventional open-loop MIMO-OFDM as was shown by the authors in a previous study. MIMO R-OFDM is implemented in a testbed targeting IMT-Advanced systems and is evaluated in a mobile environment. The antenna spacings are changed, i.e. the correlation coefficients between two antennas are changed, then the validity of MIMO R-OFDM is evaluated. The results of the field experiment reveal that MIMO R-OFDM is effective when the transmitter antenna spacings are decreased. The maximum cumulative distribution function (CDF) gain of MIMO R-OFDM with respect to conventional MIMO-OFDM is 6 % when the antenna spacing of the transmitter is same as the wave length of the carrier. In addition, it was also found that the rotational angle should be determined based not only on modulation order and coding rate, but also on the correlation coefficients between transmitter and receiver antennas.

Target identification has been an active researching area in past decades. In this paper, we present an identification method based on the high-resolution image from a narrowband multiple-input multiple-output (NMIMO) imaging radar system. Different from the traditional image-based method, the key idea of the proposed method is to build the plane-rotation-invariance features of a candidate target with its location parameters of 2-D scatterers, regardless of the amplitude information of a 2-D scatterer. Numerical examples are presented for testing our method.

Based on Monte-Carlo integral, an efficient method of the discrete channel capacity estimation is proposed. Through the proposed method, the channel capacities with PSK and QAM input are obtained. Numerical results show that the proposed method can accurately estimate the constrained capacity, with less computation, and that the PSK and QAM input-constrained capacities with the same modulation orders are approximately equal. The constrained capacity with uniform distribution input can be considered as the lower bound of channel capacity with QAM input.

In this paper, the performance of vertical Bell Labs Space-Time (V-BLAST) algorithms for the MIMO systems with two transmit antennas is analyzed over correlated-Rayleigh channel. We derive the analytical bit error rates (BERs) of the first and second detection steps for both optimal and fixed detection ordering schemes. We also investigate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradation of the detection steps for correlated-Rayleigh channels over an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh channel. Afterwards, the effect of optimal ordering on the SNR improvement over fixed detection ordering has been discussed. Results have shown that the correlation reduces the SNR improvement of optimal ordering in the first step, whereas the correlation has no effect on the performance of the second step.

This paper presents the results of a distributed multiple-input/multiple-output radar system which emulates four transmitters and four receivers. This experimental multistatic X-band system is employed for synthetic aperture radar imaging of both simple and complex scattering structures, and comparisons are made with the corresponding monostatic imagery. The required cross-platform coherency is maintained through a calibration technique which ensures accurate multistatic image registration and formation over ultra-wide frequency bands and large azimuthal collection angles. The collected high resolution imagery facilitates detailed analysis of multistatic scattering phenomenology and demonstrates the feasibility of coherent distributed sensor imaging. This demonstration is foundational to the structure of multi-platform radio frequency imaging architectures and provides a basis for further development of coherent distributed sensing.

This paper studies the performance of transmit antenna selection algorithms in spatially correlated fading MEMO channels. The antenna subset is selected based on maximizing the channel capacity. A novel method is proposed to select the optimum set of transmit antennas based on the upper bound on the mean channel capacity. The proposed method based only on the fading correlation and not the instantaneous channel realization. And also its computational complexity is low and tends to be realized. The simulation results show that antenna selection of transmitter can increase the channel capacity of MIMO system by 1 bit/s in a flat fading environment with a rank deficient channel.

A particle filter algorithm is investigated to perform joint estimation of carrier frequency offset (CFO) and channel in multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) wireless communication systems. The filter marginalizes out the channel parameters from the sampling space in sequential importance sampling, and propagates them with the Kalman filter. Then the importance weights of CFO particles are evaluated according to the imaginary part of error between measurement and estimate. Moreover, the varieties of particles are maintained by sequential importance resampling. Simulations demonstrate the algorithm can estimate the CFO and channel with high accuracy, as well as has some robustness to the channel model variation.

In this paper, we investigate MIMO systems with transmit antenna selection over an intra-class correlated Rayleigh fading channel. In our study, one single transmit antenna with an aim to maximizing the total received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is selected for transmission, while it is assumed that the receive side use all the available antennas. Using binary-phase-shift-keying (BPSK) modulation as an illustration, we derive the exact bit error rates (BERs) of two diversity schemes, namely transmit antenna selection and full complexity schemes. Moreover, we compare the asymptotic performance of the two diversity schemes analytically. The effect of correlation among the sub-channels on the SNR degradation is also determined in terms of the correlation coefficient and the number of transmit/receive antennas. Finally, results show that the transmit antenna selection scheme can achieve better performance than the full complexity scheme at the expense of a small amount of feedback information from the receiver.

In this paper we describe a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication testbed, in which real-time signal processing is achieved with the help of Sundance's digital signal processing platform including TI DSP modules, XINLINX FPGA modules and A/D & D/A modules. As an advanced wireless communication system, the presented MIMO testbed not only provides a real communication link for theoretical researchers to evaluate the key techniques and design their algorithms, but also achieves a comprehensive, open and systemic application testbed with short development time and flexible reconfiguration.
