Urban air mobility (UAM) is a subset of advanced air mobility which is provisioned to reduce traffic congestion in and around urban areas. Unlike traditional transportation, UAM operates in the airspace, which brings safety issues. Thus, ensuring robust, high-rate data transmission is a prime concern to prevent collisions and share information among UAMs. With its wide bandwidth, millimeter wave communications are regarded as a promising solution for feasible air-to-air (A2A) communications for UAMs. To compensate for the large path loss at millimeter wave bands, the use of codebook based multiple-input multiple-output signal processing has been studied due to its quality performance with low complexity. Most of existing codebooks exploit codewords producing beam patterns with equal beamwidth. However, for better communication within the UAM corridor, it is essential to design a codebook which considers the unique topology of the UAM corridor. To deal with this issue, we have developed a codebook customized for A2A communications by exploiting the spatial characteristics of the UAM corridor. Furthermore, we propose a weighting-based beamwidth allocation method, which can enhance the efficiency of data transmission. Simulation results show that the proposed codebook exhibits lower outage probability and higher spectral efficiency than conventional codebooks.

This research addresses the tracking control problem for a class of multi-input multi-output networked systems characterized by unknown nonlinear functions, mismatched disturbances, event-triggered inputs, and input coupling. A novel prescribed performance control strategy and actuator update protocol are proposed to address this challenge. In contrast to existing results, our approach requires the transmission of a binary signal (0 or 1) to the actuator. This not only reduces the quantity of data transmission but also minimizes the number of transmitted bits, thereby saving communication costs. Furthermore, irrespective of the unknown nonlinearities, disturbances, and measurement errors, the proposed method ensures both transient and steady-state performance in output tracking. Simulation results are provided to validate the established theoretical conclusions.

The effectiveness of Millimeter Wave full-duplex (FD) Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) system relies on high-dimensional channel estimation with high computational complexity. To avoid high-overhead pilot training, we propose a novel low-complexity end-to-end (E2E) hybrid beamforming strategy for FD mmwave IAB systems using implicit channel state information (CSI). Particularly, the IAB node first dynamically senses spatial channels, where an sensing Transformer block is introduced to actively design the sensing vector. The active sensing strategy can effectively handle the sequential pilot observations with an arbitrary input length. Capitalizing on the implicit channel features extracted by the Transformer, a hybrid beamforming neural network (HBFnet) is further exploited to design the hybrid precoder/combiner of IAB node, thus efficiently mitigating SI while compensating channel fading. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the benchmarks, especially with low pilot overheads.

Deep Learning(DL)has important applications to both commercial and military communications,such as software-defined radio,cognitive radio and spectrum *** DL has been intensively studied for modulation recognition,there are very few investigations for blind identification of Space-Time Block Codes(STBCs).This paper proposes a Residual Network(RN)-based model for identifying 6 kinds of STBC signals with a single receiving antenna,including the same length of coding *** our work,we use the frequency-domain correlation function of a single time delay as the training data of DL ***,we explore the suitable RN structure for blind identification of ***,we compare the RN model with convolutional neural network and traditional method,and test the performance of RN *** results show that our RN-based model provides good performance with low sensitivity to decay of the dataset,such as sample length and data *** the same time,better identification accuracy can be achieved under the condition of different modulation types and channel fading parameters at low Signal to Noise Ratio(SNR).

User clustering presents a significant design challenge when implementing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To fully exploit the potential of power domain multiplexing and achieve better performance of NOMA, users must possess significant variations in their channel gains. Consequently, it becomes necessary to cluster users based on their distinct channel gain characteristics. However, using random user clustering often leads to suboptimal outcomes, while the exhaustive search method is burdened with exorbitant complexity. To achieve the balance between system performance and complexity, this paper proposes a user clustering scheme that relies on Jaccard coefficient, which is a measure of differences in user channels, ranging from 0 to 1. A value of 0 indicates complete dissimilarity, while a value of 1 indicates complete similarity. By calculating the Jaccard coefficient, we can identify users who are dissimilar to the centroid as a cluster. Additionally, a new power allocation algorithm is developed to maximize the sum spectral efficiency by employing successive convex approximations (SCA), taking into account both spectral efficiency and user quality of service. The simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm proposed for maximizing the sum spectral efficiency exhibits a higher convergence rate and can substantially enhance the sum spectral efficiency in comparison to the full power control (FPC) scheme.

Exploiting the sparse user activity induced by sporadic transmission, compressed sensing (CS) has been widely applied in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) enabled non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for efficient multiuser detection. However, most of the existing detection schemes in MIMO enabled NOMA systems focus mainly on the spatial structure in user activity induced by multiantenna reception, while the temporal correlation in user activity has rarely been incorporated for further performance improvement. To address this issue, we propose a novel Multiuser Detection framework in MIMO enabled NOMA (MDMN), which explicitly integrates the temporal correlation in user activity into the detection process to improve the user detection accuracy. Specifically, we first formulate multiuser detection with multiantenna reception in MDMN as a block CS problem, by exploiting the spatial correlation in user activity. Furthermore, through incorporating the temporal correlation in active user sets into block CS, an adaptive CS algorithm based on subspace pursuit is developed for MDMN, named spatial-temporal correlation enhanced adaptive subspace pursuit (STASP). In particular, STASP does not require any prior knowledge of the user sparsity, as the cross validation designed in STASP can properly terminate the algorithm. The superior performance of the proposed MDMN framework and the corresponding algorithms is corroborated by extensive simulation results.

On the Convenience of Perfect Channel Knowledge for Spatial Equalization of Correlated MIMO-VLC Links: Is it Really Worth it?

Visible Light Communication has risen as a promising technology to support indoor wireless connectivity and provide illumination services as well. Moreover, high communication performance can be achieved by implementing multiple-input multiple-output architectures. However, the crosstalk characterizing spatially correlated channels scenarios may significantly impact on reliability. Such issue is commonly addressed by means of spatial equalization, with zero forcing and minimum mean square error representing the most widespread approaches. These methods allow the mitigation of crosstalk, even though they may cause undesired noise amplification as side effect, inducing errors during signal detection and decoding. In this regard, by focusing on a more realistic approach with respect to the literature, this work overturns the belief that having perfect channel knowledge is always better. Hence, we show that, when applying spatial equalization, imperfect channel knowledge is sometimes preferable to ideal channel state information. As a result, noise amplification is reduced at the expense of a reasonably less accurate crosstalk mitigation, with better communication performance being achieved.

In this work we consider a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) system, which senses multiple spatial directions and serves multiple users. Upon resorting to an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission format and a differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation, we study the design of the radiated waveforms and of the receive filters employed by the radar and the users. The approach is communication-centric, in the sense that a radar-oriented objective is optimized under constraints on the average transmit power, the power leakage towards specific directions, and the error rate of each user, thus safeguarding the communication quality of service (QoS). We adopt a unified design approach allowing a broad family of radar objectives, including both estimation- and detection-oriented merit functions. We devise a suboptimal solution based on alternating optimization of the involved variables, a convex restriction of the feasible search set, and minorization-maximization, offering a single algorithm for all of the radar merit functions in the considered family. Finally, the performance is inspected through numerical examples.

An investigation on the performance of a proposed deep learning (DL)-based signal detection scheme over the traditional successive interference cancellation (SIC) method for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) - non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based downlink system for vehicular communication is presented. The proposed scheme is analyzed for a system of two users in a cell experiencing selective frequency Rayleigh fading channels. The DL-based MIMO-NOMA receiver detects signals in a single-step process without explicitly estimating channel state information. The long short-term memory (LSTM) based scheme is proposed to perform joint channel estimation and signal detection. The performance of the proposed DL based detection scheme is compared with the traditional method SIC based on least square (LS) estimation and minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimation. The simulation results show that the proposed DL-based detection is more effective than conventional SIC techniques. Also, it shows better adaptability to variations in cyclic prefix (CP) length and the number of pilot symbols in the frame. It has been observed that even in cases of severe inter-symbol interference (ISI), the proposed DL-based method outperforms the LS and MMSE based conventional SIC detectors. © 2024 IEEE.

Non-Convex Generalized Nash Games for Energy Efficient Power Allocation and Beamforming in mmWave Networks

Network management is a fundamental ingredient for efficient operation of wireless networks. With increasing bandwidth, number of antennas and number of users, the amount of information required for network management increases significantly. Therefore, distributed network management is a key to efficient operation of future networks. This paper focuses on the problem of distributed joint beamforming control and power allocation in ad-hoc mmWave networks. Over the shared spectrum, a number of multi-input-multi-output links attempt to minimize their supply power by simultaneously finding the locally optimal power allocation and beamformers in a self-organized manner. Our design considers a family of non-convex quality-of-service constraint and utility functions characterized by monotonicity in the strategies of the various users. We propose a two-stage, decentralized optimization scheme, where the adaptation of power levels and beamformer coefficients are iteratively performed by each link. We first prove that given a set of receive beamformers, the power allocation stage converges to an optimal generalized Nash equilibrium of the generalized power allocation game. Then we prove that iterative minimum-mean-square-error adaptation of the receive beamformer results in an overall converging scheme. Several transmit beamforming schemes requiring different levels of information exchange are also compared in the proposed allocation framework. Our simulation results show that allowing each link to optimize its transmit filters using the direct channel results in a near optimum performance with very low computational complexity, even though the problem is highly non-convex.
