The sphere decoding algorithm for signal transmitted on multiple antennas channel is considered. In this paper, the preprocessing stage is analyzed in order to seek a reduced complexity and some improvements are made to enhance the performance. The computer simulation results show that the improved algorithm by applying Pohst Enumeration with selected initial radius is more efficient than that by applying Schnorr-Euchner Enumeration. For example, the average floating-point operations in 6x6 MIMO using 64-QAM modulation reduces 71% compared with SE enumeration.

Software defined radio (SDR) and multiple-antenna (MIMO) techniques have been of great interest recently. In this paper, we combine the flexibility of SDR with the channel capacity gain of MIMO to achieve an optimized scheme for future communication systems. Subject to limited spectrum resources and specified quality-of-service (QoS) constraints, our scheme maps the required services onto the available frequency bands in an optimized way. We make use of the recently proposed tunable channel decomposition (TCD) to partition the MIMO channel into subchannels having prescribed gains. As a result, the proposed technique determines the optimum subchannel allocation requiring the minimum transmitting power.

In this paper, we consider the problem of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars employing the generalized detector based on the generalized approach to signal processing in noise and using the space-time coding to achieve desired diversity. To that end, we derive a suitable generalized detector structure after briefly outlining the model of the received target return signal. The generalized detector performance is expressed in closed form as a function of the clutter statistical properties and of the space-time code matrix. We investigate a particular case when the generalized detector requires a priori knowledge of the clutter covariance, i.e., the decision statistics, under the null hypothesis of no target, is an ancillary statistic, in the sense that it depends on the actual clutter covariance matrix, but its probability density function (pdf) is functionally independent of such a matrix. Therefore, threshold setting is feasible with no a priori knowledge as to the clutter power spectrum. As to the detection performance, a general integral form of the detection probability is provided, holding independent of the target fluctuation model. The formula is not analytically manageable, nor does it appear to admit general approximate expressions, which allow giving an insightful look in the system behavior. We thus restrict our attention to the case of Rayleigh-distributed target attenuation (Swerling-1 model). To code construction we use an information-theoretic approach. This approach offers a methodological framework for space-time coding in MIMO radar systems, as well as simple and intuitive bounds for performance prediction.

In this paper, we analyze channel quality indicator (CQI) mismatch probabilities of multiuser orthogonal random beamforming (ORBF) systems. First, we derive the CQI mismatch probability of the ORBF system with.. transmit antennas and.. users equipped with one receive antenna. Using that result, we also derive the upper and lower bounds of the per user unitary and rate control (PU2RC) system with 2 transmit antennas and.. users equipped with one receive antenna, which is being adopted in the IEEE 802.16m standard. Finally, we compare theoretical results with numerical results from simulation.

We experimentally measure and characterize the channel fluctuations in a terrestrial laser communication link using spatial diversity. We measure the signals arising from the propagation of laser beams in a system that comprises two transmit and two receive apertures under various design settings. We find that the spatial channels are statistically correlated. This spatial correlation increases with receiver aperture size and with increasing proximity between beams and/or receiver apertures. By quantifying the cross-covariance between pairs of simultaneously recorded time functions, we map the spatial channel correlation of the optical wireless link as a function of beam separation at the transmitter, receiver aperture, and receiver optics separation. We discuss the effects of transverse wind velocity and establish criteria for the design of effective multiple-input multiple-output free-space optical links affected by atmospheric turbulence.

Available spectrum resources are becoming scarcer, while additional services are being integrated into wireless devices. Cognitive radio and multiple-antenna (MIMO) techniques can be combined to provide a solution to this dilemma. Given the currently available frequency bands and a set of bit-rate constrained services to be transmitted, the antennas can be partitioned among frequency bands and the recently proposed tunable channel decomposition (TCD) may be applied to obtain subchannels having prescribed gains. We present a reconfigurable closed-loop transceiver design which can adapt to various partitioning scenarios. As a result, our system has the potential to deliver the required services with reduced transmitting power.

multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology can be used in cyclic prefix single carrier (CPSC) systems to improve communication quality and capacity. This paper proposes a blind channel estimation method for MIMO-CPSC systems with repetition scheme. The algorithm makes use of the redundancy introduced by the repetition scheme at the transmitter to identify the channel based on a subspace approach. Moreover, the proposed method obtains accurate channel estimation with fewer received blocks. The numerical results are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed blind channel estimation method.

We consider the problem of waveform design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems employing the generalized detector that is constructed based on the generalized approach to signal processing in noise. We investigate the case of an extended target and without limiting ourselves to orthogonal waveforms. Instead, we develop a procedure to design the optimal waveform that maximizes the signal-to-interference plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the generalized detector output. The optimal waveform requires a knowledge of both target and clutter statistics. We also develop several suboptimal waveforms requiring knowledge of target statistics only, clutter statistics only, or both. Thus, the transmit waveforms are adjusted based on target and clutter statistics. A model for the radar returns that incorporates the transmit waveforms is developed. The target detection problem is formulated for that model. Optimal and suboptimal algorithms are derived for designing the transmit waveforms under different assumptions regarding the statistical information available to the generalized detector. The performance of these algorithms is illustrated by computer simulation.

In this paper, a Forward Error Coded (FEC) Decision-Directed (FEC-DD) channel estimation scheme is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency Division multiplexing/Space Division multiple Access (OFDM/SDMA) systems which is based on the Expectation-Conditional Maximization Either (ECME) algorithm. The proposed DD technique is combined with the Optimised Hierarchy Reduced Search Algorithm (OHRSA) based Multi-User Detector (MUD) and directly calculates the Maximization-Step (M-Step) by conditionally maximizing the logarithmic likelihood function of the "incomplete" data. We avoid the employment of matrix inversion, since only a single subcarrier's Frequency-Domain CHannel Transfer Function (FD-CHTF) is calculated at a time, since we assume that the other subcarriers' FD-CHTFs are the most recent estimates from the previous iteration of the proposed scheme. Our simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed scheme is capable of reducing the received power requirement by 4dB upon exploiting the error correction capability of a FEC decoder within the ECME loop.

In this work we evaluate the performance impact of reconfigurable antennas in a multiple-input multiple-output ad-hoc network where the links are allowed to transmit at the same time and interfere with each other. To achieve this goal, we have used two Reconfigurable Circular Patch Antennas (RCPA) to take channel measurements in a 3-link topology. To quantify the performance, instead of using Shannon capacity, we restrict the links to use an integer number of bits per transmission, with constraints on an application-imposed BER, as well as total available power per link. As the focus of this paper is on ad-hoc networks, we present iterative algorithms that achieve antenna configuration selection as well as bit and power loading in a distributed manner. By using an integer number of bits as well as SINR-based BER constraints, we aim to provide a realistic evaluation of the performance impact of reconfigurable antennas in a MIMO ad-hoc network.
