Several applications need imaging sensors for environmental monitoring which can continuously observe an area in a 24/7 mode independently from the weather and other atmospheric obscuration like dust and smoke. Imaging MIMO radar fulfills these requirements and enables the opportunity of low-cost and robust imaging systems by synthesizing many virtual antennas out of just a few real ones. MIRA-CLE is a fully configurable and expandable experimental MIMO radar in Ka-band while MIRA-CLE X works in X-band and is intended to be a low-cost experimental system for long range applications. This paper presents both MIMO radar systems and shows and discusses first imaging results of MIRA-CLE X.

In this paper, we study multi-hop non-regenerative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay communications with any number of hops. We design the optimal source precoding matrix and the optimal relay amplifying matrices for such relay network where a nonlinear decision feedback equalizer (DFE) based on the minimal mean-squared error (MMSE) criterion is used at the destination node. We show that when the composite objective function is Schur-convex, the MMSE-DFE receiver together with the optimal source and relay matrices enable an arbitrary number of source symbols to be transmitted at one time, and yield a significantly improved performance compared with non-regenerative MIMO relay systems using linear receivers at the destination.

This paper proposes a dimension reduction maximum likelihood (ML) soft demodulator for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. The proposed dimension reduction soft demodulator reduces the dimension of the search space for minimum Euclidean distance calculation by exploiting ML hard detection algorithms and can achieve significantly lower complexity than existing optimal soft demodulators based on exhaustive or near-exhaustive search. The dimension reduction can be realized through the use of optimum MIMO hard detectors such as a sphere decoder, resulting in optimal performance. It can also be implemented using suboptimum low-complexity MIMO hard detectors such as various conventional MIMO equalizers, further reducing the complexity with slight performance degradation.

Quantum evolutionary complex sphere decoder algorithm (QECSDA) is proposed. A brief analysis is then given to the theoretical basis and practical performance of signal detection in multiple-input multiple-output communication systems using QECSDA. The emulation results have shown that the proposed algorithm outperforms not only the zero-forcing (ZF) detector but also the ordered successive cancellation (OSIC) detector in both a symmetrical system and an asymmetrical system.

In this paper, a new observation equation of non-Gaussian frequency selective fading Bell Labs layered space time (BLAST) architecture system is proposed, which is used for frequency selective fading channels and non-Gaussian noise in an application environment of BLAST system. With othogonal matrix triangularization (QR decomposition) of the channel matrix, the static observation equation of frequency selective fading BLAST system is transformed into a dynamic state space model, and then the particle filter is used for space-time layered detection. Making the full use of the finite alphabet of the digital modulation communication signal, the optimal proposal distribution can be chosen to produce particle and update the weight. Incorporated with current method of reducing error propagation, a new space-time layered detection algorithm is proposed. Simulation result shows the validity of the proposed algorithm.

We study the degrees of freedom (DoF) regions of two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Z and full interference channels in this paper. We assume that the receivers always have perfect channel state information. We derive the DoF region of Z interference channel with channel state information at transmitter (CSIT). For full interference channel without CSIT, the DoF region has been obtained in previous work except for a special case M-1 < N-1 < min(M-2, N-2), where M-i and N-i are the number of transmit and receive antennas of user i, respectively. We show that for this case the DoF regions of the Z and full interference channels are the same. We establish the achievability based on the assumption of transmitter antenna mode switching. A systematic way of constructing the DoF-achieving nulling and beamforming matrices is presented in this paper.

In this paper we implement a first multi-gigabit real-time dual-polarization CO-OFDM receiver in a 2 x 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration. The experimental setup consists of four 1.5 Giga samples per second (GS/s) high-speed analog-to-digital converters (ADC) and one Stratix III field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The signal streams are processed in real-time mode, and the data rates of 3.33 Gb/s and 6.67 Gb/s are realized for 4-QAM and 16-QAM, respectively.
