In this paper, we investigate the design of multiple panel arrays (MPAs) in line of sight (LoS) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. We utilize the spherical-wave model for the LoS channel component. The fundamental relations among key design parameters in MPAs LoS MIMO system are studied to obtain the maximum spatial multiplexing gain according to the effective degrees of freedom and channel capacity. We further analyze the performance of MPAs system when the array size and transmission distance are not matched and propose an algorithm to optimize the location of antennas. Numerical results indicate that the proposed algorithm can reduce the computational load compared with the exhaustive approach for the similar system performance. Moreover, the optimized panel antenna array is robust to the geometrical change, misplacement, and signal-to-noise-ratio.

Outage Analysis of Wireless-Powered Relaying MIMO Systems with Non-Linear Energy Harvesters and Imperfect CSI

In this paper, we investigate a wireless-powered dual-hop relaying multiple-input multiple-output system, which consists of a multi-antenna source (S) node, a multi-antenna destination (D) node, and N(N > 1) single-antenna wireless-powered relaying nodes. At each relay, a power splitting receiver is applied to process the received signal for information decoding and energy harvesting simultaneously, and a decode-and-forward scheme is adopted to forward the processed information. Furthermore, the energy harvester at each relay is assumed to be non-linear with a saturation threshold to limit the power level of the energy. Assuming imperfect channel state information is available both at S and D, outage performance is investigated when S adopts transmit antenna selection in the presence of feedback delay and D performs maximal ratio combining technique to deal with the multiple copies of signals with channel estimation errors. Taking into account a Kth best relay selection criterion, which results in the Kth best performance in terms of outage probability for the source-relay-destination link, an analytical expression for OP is derived. Monte Carlo simulation results are presented to verify the accuracy of the derived analytical model.

Accurate estimation of the non-parametric FRF of lightly-damped mechanical systems using arbitrary excitations

Lightly-damped mechanical systems exhibit strong resonant behaviour which could potentially result in life-threatening situations. To prevent these situations from happening, frequency response function measurements are essential to accurately characterise the resonant modes of the mechanical system. Unfortunately, these measurements are distorted by leakage and (long) transient phenomena. Local modelling techniques have been introduced in the past to resolve these complications but either they do not use the correct model structure or they introduce a bias. This paper proposes a local rational modelling technique which completely removes the bias from the estimation procedure and is applicable to large-scale multiple-input, multiple-output systems. The developed technique uses the bootstrapped total least squares estimator which provides unbiased estimates for the local rational model and generates accurate uncertainty bounds for the obtained non-parametric frequency response function. The proposed technique is successfully verified using a simulation example of a large-scale system which contains 100 resonances and has 100 inputs and 100 outputs. Its practical applicability is illustrated by characterising the resonant behaviour of the tailplane of a glider. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Exact SMP Algorithms for Integer-Forcing Linear MIMO Receivers

To obtain the optimal coefficient matrix for the integer-forcing (IF) linear receiver, the successive minima problem (SMP) on lattices needs to be solved. By decomposing SMP into a series of subspace avoiding problems (SAP) and developing a modified sphere-decoding (SD) algorithm based on the Schnorr-Euchner (SE) enumeration strategy to solve each instance of SAP, two practical algorithms are constructed to solve SMP exactly for real and complex lattices respectively. The initial radius and the starting position on the search-tree of the SAP algorithm are optimized by exploiting the intermediate results obtained in previous rounds. As compared to the Minkowski reduction algorithm, the proposed complex SMP algorithm brings not only more freedom in lattice code design, but also computation reduction in finding the coefficient matrix. Moreover, benefiting from the tree-search initialization optimization, the proposed real SMP algorithm can bring even more computation reduction when the system size is large. However, the proposed algorithms achieve practically the same performance as Minkowski reduction for the IF linear receiver, as the Minkowski-reduced basis approximates successive minima very closely.

Performance of Uniform Concentric Circular Arrays in a Three-Dimensional Spatial Fading Channel Model

In this paper, the performance of uniform concentric circular arrays (UCCA) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receiver in a three-dimensional (3D) multi-path channel is investigated. Firstly, the analytical expressions for antenna spatial fading correlation and electromagnetic vector sensor (EVS) at each element are derived, where the UCCA configuration for MIMO receiver is considered. Then the effect of the angular parameters associated with the mean azimuth of arrival, azimuth spread, mean elevation of arrival, and elevation spread on the system performance is presented. The numerical and simulation results indicate that the excellent performance of the proposed UCCA MIMO antenna array system. In addition, comparisons between our theoretical results of the UCCA-EVS antenna array with previous ULA and UCA antenna array show that the analysis is accurate and applicable to depict the 3D spatial fading channel model.

Outage and ergodic sum-rate performance of cooperative MIMO-NOMA with imperfect CSI and SIC

In this paper, we examine a half-duplex cooperative multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access system with imperfect channel state information (CSI) and successive interference cancelation. The base station (BS) and mobile users with multi-antenna communicate by the assistance of a CSI based or fixed gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relay with a single antenna. The diversity schemes, transmit antenna selection, and maximal ratio combining are applied at the BS and mobile users, respectively. We study the system performance in terms of outage probability (OP) and ergodic sum-rate. Accordingly, the exact OP expressions are first derived jointly for the CSI based and fixed gain AF relay cases in Nakagami-m fading channels. Next, the corresponding lower and upper bound expressions of the OP are obtained. The high signal-to-noise ratio analyses are also carried out to demonstrate the error floor value resulted in the practical case and achievable diversity order and array gain in the ideal case. Moreover, the lower and upper bounds of the ergodic sum-rate expressions are derived together for the CSI based and fixed gain AF relay cases. Finally, the Monte-Carlo simulations are used to verify the correctness of the analytical results.

Joint timing synchronization and frequency offset acquisition algorithm for MIMO OFDM systems

For multiple-input multiple-output （MIMO） orthogonal frequency division multiplexing （OFDM） systems, a joint timing synchronization and frequency offset acquisition algorithm based on fractional Fourier transform （FRFT） is proposed. The linear frequency modulation signals superimposed on the data signals are used as the training signals. By performing FRFT on the received signals and searching the peak value of the FRFT results, the receiver can realize timing synchronization and frequency offset acquisition simultaneously. Compared with the existing methods, the proposed algorithm can provide better timing synchronization performance and larger frequency offset acquisition range even under multi-path channels with low signal to noise ratio. Theoretical analysis and simulation results prove this point.

Performance analysis of spatial multiplexing MIMO-OFDM system with different equalisers and guard intervals

multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is a very popular solution in the field of wireless communications, in order to improve the capacity and reliability of radio link. Nevertheless, during any transmission over fading channel, the performance of MIMO system is degraded due to the inter symbol interference (ISI). The combination of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) and the use of equalisation at the reception have become very effective to eliminate the (ISI) and reduce the imperfection of the channel. The optimal maximum likelihood (ML) equaliser suffers from high computational complexity. In this context, we propose the combination of vertical bell labs space time (VBLAST) multiplexing and ordered successive interference cancellation (OSIC) equaliser in MIMO-OFDM system, whose performance is compared with different equalisers, in particular zero forcing (ZF), minimum mean square error (MMSE), and ML using cyclic prefix (CP) and zero padding (ZP) intervals in Rayleigh time-selective fading channel. The simulation results show that the performance of ZF/MMSE-OSIC equaliser with ZP-ODFM is close to the ML with a low complexity and it works better as compared to other algorithms.

Content Caching and Delivery in MIMO Fog-RANs With Wireless Fronthaul at Small Cache Size

This letter investigates the caching and delivery strategies in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fog radio access network (Fog-RAN). We focus on the small cache size scenario where the accumulated cache memories of all edge nodes (ENs) are not enough to cache the whole database. We propose a new file splitting and placement scheme tailored for the small cache size, which offers the freedom to adjust the duplication order of the cached contents to minimize the normalized delivery time (NDT). In the fronthaul delivery, we use multiple antennas to multiplex multiple messages while in the access delivery, transmitter cooperation induced by the duplicated contents among ENs is utilized to cancel interference. By jointly optimizing caching and delivery, we obtain an achievable minimum NDT. It is shown that the achievable NDT is within an additive gap of 1 to the theoretical optimum.

Compact band-notched UWB antenna for MIMO applications in portable wireless devices

A compact 5.5 GHz band-notched ultra-wideband (UWB) 2-element antenna with high isolation for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) portable wireless devices in wireless personal area network (WPAN) application is proposed. The MIMO antenna is designed for 3.1-10.6 GHz range on Neltec substrate with compact dimension of 43 x 20 mm(2) and is tested experimentally. For the rejection band at 5.5 GHz, a slot of length 1.0 is etched into the radiator. Simple structure, i.e., receded steps at ground are used to improve isolation by 3 dB between two UWB antennas. The simulated and measured results show |S-11|-10 dB and |S-21|-20 dB in most of the frequency range excluding the reject band at 5.5 GHz in UWB range. The measured, simulated and calculated results show that the proposed UWB MIMO antenna is a good candidate for UWB MIMO systems. (c) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
