This paper considers the problem of filter design with secrecy constraints, where two legitimate parties (Alice and Bob) communicate in the presence of an eavesdropper (Eve), over a Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel. This problem involves the design of transmit and receive filters which minimize the mean-square error (MSE) between the legitimate parties, whilst assuring that the eavesdropper MSE remains above a certain level. We characterize the form of the optimal transmit filter when both the legitimate receiver and the eavesdropper employ Zero-Forcing (ZF) filters. By capitalizing on the dual problem, we also show that the original matrix optimization problem can be reduced to a simple scalar optimization problem, whose solution can be readily computed by employing a simple bisection method. Numerical results illustrate the main conclusions.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an automatic identification technology which utilizes radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to identify objects carrying tags in the reading range of a reader. Such identification over a wireless channel doesn't necessitate the tag and the reader being in physical contact or line-of-sight (LOS) aligned. This preferable feature of sending identification data wirelessly may adversely affect the performance of the RFID system, because even when LOS path exists, heavy small-scale fading may still be present due to indoor operation, a cluttered reader environment, and the inhomogeneous nature of the tagged object. To mitigate this fading problem and increase the read reliability, space-time block coding (STBC) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) RFID systems is suggested and employed. In this thesis, a performance analysis of orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) in passive MIMO RFID system is conducted. More particularly, the conditional moment-generating function (MGF) approach is employed to analyse the performance of OSTBC over Nakagami- (Hoyt) MIMO RFID backscattering channels. New exact and asymptotic closed-form symbol error rate (SER) expressions are derived for the case of two and four reader-receiving antennas. The diversity order that the system can achieve is found to be, where is the number of tag antennas, and the performance of this channel is found to be more sensitive to the channel condition (the parameter) of the forward link than that of the backscattering link. A good agreement with previous published studies was observed for the special case that the Hoyt fading covers.

In this work, first, a multiuser detection (MUD) algorithm based on component-level soft interference cancellation and linear minimum mean square error (CLSIC-LMMSE) is proposed, which can enhance the bit error ratio (BER) performance of the traditional SIC-LMMSE-based MUD by mitigating error propagation. Second, for non-binary low density parity check (NB-LDPC) coded high-order modulation systems, when the proposed algorithm is integrated with partial mapping, the receiver with iterative detection and decoding (IDD) achieves not only better BER performance but also significantly computational complexity reduction over the traditional SIC-LMMSE-based IDD scheme. Extrinsic information transfer chart (EXIT) analysis and numerical simulations are both used to support the conclusions.

Spherical Harmonic Expansion of Fisher-Bingham Distribution and 3-D Spatial Fading Correlation for multiple-Antenna Systems

This paper considers the 3-D spatial fading correlation (SFC) resulting from an angle-of-arrival (AoA) distribution that can be modeled by a mixture of Fisher-Bingham distributions (FB-distributions) on the sphere. By deriving a closed-form expression for the spherical harmonic transform for the component FB-distributions, with arbitrary parameter values, we obtain a closed-form expression of the 3-D SFC for the mixture case. The 3-D SFC expression is general and can be used in arbitrary multiantenna array geometries and is demonstrated for the cases of a 2-D uniform circular array (UCA) and a 3-D regular dodecahedron array (RDA). In computational aspects, we use recursions to compute the spherical harmonic coefficients and give pragmatic guidelines on the truncation size in the series representations to yield machine precision accuracy results. The results are further corroborated through numerical experiments to demonstrate that the closed-form expressions yield the same results as significantly more computationally expensive numerical integration methods.

Two-Cylinder and Multi-Ring GBSSM for Realizing and Modeling of Vehicle-to-Vehicle Wideband MIMO Channels

A new geometry-based stochastic scattering model (GBSSM) for wideband multiple-input-multiple-output vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) channels is proposed in this paper. The proposed GBSSM with cross-polarized antennas combines three-dimensional two cylinders to model the stationary scatterers and two-dimensional multirings to imitate the moving scatterers. The channel realization by using the channel matrix in this paper is much more straightforward and concise to study the channel characteristics compared with the too complicated analytical solutions available so far. Because V2V propagation channels are nonstationary, the time-varying channel properties and parameters are further investigated based on the proposed GBSSM and realized channels, which can be used in the link and system-level simulations in V2V radio systems.

Molecular MIMO: From Theory to Prototype

In diffusion-based molecular communication, information transport is governed by diffusion through a fluid medium. The achievable data rates for these channels are very low compared to the radio-based communication system, since diffusion can be a slow process. To improve the data rate, a novel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) design for molecular communication is proposed that utilizes multiple molecular emitters at the transmitter and multiple molecular detectors at the receiver (in RF communication these all correspond to antennas). Using particle-based simulators, the channel's impulse response is obtained and mathematically modeled. These models are then used to determine interlink interference (ILI) and intersymbol interference (ISI). It is assumed that when the receiver has incomplete information regarding the system and the channel state, low complexity symbol detection methods are preferred since the receiver is small and simple. Thus, four detection algorithms are proposed-adaptive thresholding, practical zero forcing with channel models excluding/including the ILI and ISI, and Genie-aided zero forcing. The proposed algorithms are evaluated extensively using numerical and analytical evaluations.

A minimum-of-maximum relative error support vector machine for simultaneous reverse prediction of concrete components

The simultaneous reverse prediction of multiple concrete components is very difficult, but very important in practical engineering applications. Thus, this paper presents a variant support vector machine (SVM) that uses particle swarm optimization (PSO) to minimize the maximum relative error (RE) in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scenario. This PSO-RE-MIMO SVM uses a novel learning strategy whereby the maximum relative error is used as a constraint in the optimization problem. Experimental results demonstrate that the PSO-RE-MIMO-SVM performs well for reverse prediction of multiple concrete components compared with the least-squares SVM, back propagation neural network, and radial basis function neural network approaches. Outage Analysis of Wireless-Powered Relaying MIMO Systems with Non-Linear Energy Harvesters and Imperfect CSI

In this paper, we investigate a wireless-powered dual-hop relaying multiple-input multiple-output system, which consists of a multi-antenna source (S) node, a multi-antenna destination (D) node, and N(N > 1) single-antenna wireless-powered relaying nodes. At each relay, a power splitting receiver is applied to process the received signal for information decoding and energy harvesting simultaneously, and a decode-and-forward scheme is adopted to forward the processed information. Furthermore, the energy harvester at each relay is assumed to be non-linear with a saturation threshold to limit the power level of the energy. Assuming imperfect channel state information is available both at S and D, outage performance is investigated when S adopts transmit antenna selection in the presence of feedback delay and D performs maximal ratio combining technique to deal with the multiple copies of signals with channel estimation errors. Taking into account a Kth best relay selection criterion, which results in the Kth best performance in terms of outage probability for the source-relay-destination link, an analytical expression for OP is derived. Monte Carlo simulation results are presented to verify the accuracy of the derived analytical model.

Performance analysis of spatial multiplexing MIMO-OFDM system with different equalisers and guard intervals

multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is a very popular solution in the field of wireless communications, in order to improve the capacity and reliability of radio link. Nevertheless, during any transmission over fading channel, the performance of MIMO system is degraded due to the inter symbol interference (ISI). The combination of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) and the use of equalisation at the reception have become very effective to eliminate the (ISI) and reduce the imperfection of the channel. The optimal maximum likelihood (ML) equaliser suffers from high computational complexity. In this context, we propose the combination of vertical bell labs space time (VBLAST) multiplexing and ordered successive interference cancellation (OSIC) equaliser in MIMO-OFDM system, whose performance is compared with different equalisers, in particular zero forcing (ZF), minimum mean square error (MMSE), and ML using cyclic prefix (CP) and zero padding (ZP) intervals in Rayleigh time-selective fading channel. The simulation results show that the performance of ZF/MMSE-OSIC equaliser with ZP-ODFM is close to the ML with a low complexity and it works better as compared to other algorithms.

Iterative Robust MMSE Receiver for STBC under Channel Information Errors

In this paper, an iterative robust minimum-mean square error (MMSE) receiver for space-time block coding (STBC) is proposed to mitigate the performance degradations caused by channel state information (CSI) errors. The proposed scheme estimates an instantaneous covariance matrix of the effective noise, which includes additive white Gaussian noise and the effect of CSI errors. For this estimation, multiple solution candidate vectors are selected based on the distances between the MMSE estimate of the solution and the constellation points, and their a-posteriori probabilities are utilized to execute the estimation of the covariance matrix. To improve the estimation accuracy, the estimated covariance matrix is updated iteratively. Simulation results show that proposed robust receiver achieves substantial performance gains in terms of bit error rates as compared to conventional receiver schemes under CSI errors.
